@@sudheerkumar4421 BJP's ideology is majoritarianism. That's all it is. Its a very easy ideology and is the form of nationalism that's found anywhere in the world including America. Congress has so far managed to keep together so many cultures and nations within a nation with a weak definition of nationalism but they have been able to do it with many hurdles nonetheless. No one in the world can attempt to define what nationalism in India really should be because India has been an unexpected experiment in history which against all odds succeeded. Everyone predicted that with Nehru's death India would break and even during independence many thought the union wouldn't last. Everyone was wrong. You have to praise the Congress atleast for this. They did the impossible. But now that they are out of power and BJP is waging an ideological battle with them, they have difficulty Framing it even though they have been in power with that ideology for decades.

Karan's grasp on history seems a little weak here. Tharoor also seems to miss his primary communication gap with Thapar: People may call themselves nationalist or patriotic. These terms may have personal meanings to people. These terms also generally tend to have academic meanings, which is what Tharoor is really describing. Basically, what are the more technical features of these ideologies from a sociopolitical perspective? Academically: Patriotism is basically a sense of belonging to your country. Nationalism effectively defines the nation as a whole (by blood, language, territory, shared values/legal systems, religion, etc). Under nationalism, the nation is more important than the individual. However, "the nation" is often a fairly centralised concept, and embodied by the arms of the State. We are seeing in India how quickly a transfer of power can completely redefine the definition of the nation. So nationalism is intrinsically susceptible to State excess or oppression against individuals, because it is fairly easy to justify it under "national interest", which is conveniently decided largely by the State. Institutions like courts and the media are designed to protect against this, but cannot do so once captured. The core issue is that most people would say they are patriotic. Many people that are incognisant of the difference in the meaning of the terms have been subjected to a bait and switch of starting with "I love my country, I am a stakeholder and I belong" and ending up with "the nation is supreme and therefore my rights are subservient to the national interest". Finally, many patriots are actually willing to sacrifice their rights/freedoms/lives in service of the national interest. However the crucial question is who decides what the national interest is. When Delhi and the rest of India decide Kashmir needs a change in laws and that justifies locking up their citizens for 8 months, that is an abuse of nationalism in my book.

So True. He was trying to raise points out of nothing. Looked like his only goal was to twist the words and misinterpret the meaning in order to prove his own agenda. That's not how you interview. An interviewer must be without a prior agenda to enforce his own thoughts or prove his own points.

For God's sake give him the book to prove his point- I was infuriated when Thapar acted like a child and hid the book - afraid of being proven wrong? Only an Indian interviewer can act in such a childish way. Not acceptable in western world. I wish Shashi had forcefully snatched it from him.
@sanjaynalamaru4 жыл бұрын
Only an Indian interviewer eh? You don't seem to have noticed, at that point thappar was trying to agree to Tharoor's idea. So that Tharoor can talk about his book immediately after. It was a segue.
@themintleaf17784 жыл бұрын
@@sanjaynalamaru segue? Far from it. Thapar interrupts too much and stops the flow. Annoying

Man. Nothing better than two intellectuals fighting over concepts. Amazing! Loved it. Wonder when other "media" channels would come back to this level of content.

There is no interviewer better than Mr Karan thapar. But sadly Tharoorji can sip English coffee, live in ivory castles and chew history books to write new ones that do nothing to change the ground reality or public opnion. He is a politician, go and fight, win, change. Indian may benefit more. Excellent interview loved it.

Karan Thapar's arguments are actually a classic case of 'Missing the Woods for the Trees'. In trying to push for lessening the differences between Patriotism and Nationalism, Karan hasn't allowed Dr. Shashi Tharoor to make his point even though what Dr. Tharoor intends to say gets more and more blatantly clear. That's Bad Interviewing.
