That’s what I’m thinking no joke they could throw in A gameplay style like Mario as a different character and as long as it’s fun and has a focus on forward momentum I won’t roast it to oblivion based off the fact it’s not super fast not saying sonic should copy mario just using it as an example that I don’t hate gameplay styles that make me go slower of course there are things that just don’t work like mandatory fishing but as long as it’s fun and has some form of focus on being able to to keep a consistent pace without grinding you to a halt forcefully i’m perfectly fine

I like the way the classic games handled multiple playable characters. It's the same levels and similar controls, but with their own moves that can change the your experience based on how you use them.

They had a winning formula 30 years ago damn it! Sonic 3 and Knuckles still feels like the best way to implement multiple playable characters, in my opinion. Each character has a similar move set, i.e. the spin dash, rolling into a ball, and jumping on enemies. But they also had their own unique gameplay quirks like being able to fly or being able to glide and climb walls. Sonic also had the different elemental shields and their special abilities like double jumping, bouncing, and the fire dash.

I think the real question that needs to be asked isn't "Do you want multiple playable CHARACTERS?" and rather "Do you want multiple PLAYSTYLES?" Why do you think nobody complains about several playable characters in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic Rush Games, Sonic Mania and Sonic Advance Games?

@@Hugo-yz1vbBecause I want playing as Tails to be fun. Mech stages in SA2 for example are lame and not what the character is known for. Plus if they get their own story they wont feel sidelined. The 2D games and SA1 did this the best since most characters still mainly played like Sonic (or at least a decent 3D platformer in Amy's case) making them cool and different, but also fun in the same way the MC usually is. SA1 improved on this with Tails and Knux just by having separate stories that built on the others. SA2 almost did this, but gave Tails a slower worse version of Gamma's stages, and ruined Knux's style by giving him huge meandering stages with a worse radar, so his stages are more complex, longer, harder, and less fun despite being fun to actually control. Heroes almost got it right, but all the different routes are just mandatory rehashes if the same story, so you just get tired of the repetitiveness. And the most different style breaks that up a bit, but debatable for the worse. The Chaotix can have some pretty annoying objectives. 06 possibly didn't have time to make the other chars fun, idk.

The fan remake, Sonic P-06, does divergent character playstyles brilliantly. Everyone's movesets are based on the original game, but also have received tweaks and additions based on prior entries (notably Adventure). Further changes to physics and scoring encourage speed, exploration and combat in equal measure. That's a fine example of characters that feel wildly different from Sonic, yet remain just as fun. Sonic Robo Blast 2, another fangame, goes a bit in the opposite direction while still remaining fun. The core cast of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles have abilities more or less identical to their 2D counterparts, with the exception of Sonic's "Thok" (which is apparently liable to change anyway). Unlockable characters have alternate movesets that emphasize horizontal or vertical movement.

I don't read or buy Sonic comics, cus as I grew older, I learned that every character in the Sonic lore that hasn't appeared in a mainline Sonic game for the past 2 decades, Sega threw them in the trash, or as Sega likes to call it, the Sonic comics.

OF COURSE NOT . sonics friends are the reason that i am a fan of this franchise . if sonic was the only playable character in the franchise i wouldnt even be a sonic fan . i love the gameplay variety they add to Sonic3&Knuckles , SonicAdvance , SonicAdventure1, SonicAdventure2 , SonicHeroes and P-06 and also their stories in games , cartoons and specially in Archie Comics and IDW comics make me care about them and the world they live in but sonic himself as a character is kinda boring

Ok I’m gonna be real with you about Silver. I love his gameplay, he used to be favorite character in the Sonic franchise because of his abilities, design and personality. Now he doesn’t have a USE anymore in Sonic games. I know it sucks! I enjoy the telekinesis manipulation with the boxes. You can throw them at switches, vines, enemies. You can bend bars using his ability as well. Hover around. However though Silver is very nerfed compared to Sonic and Shadow in 06. Me personality I don’t like Shadow that much. I found him to be the most repetitive goal driven character. I liked him in 06 since he stood for Sonic who was being attacked by Silver, he roundhouse kicked Silver and he has chaos spear and stuff. Sonic takes the cake in 06 for his custom shoes which can easily break the game and it’s so fun. I hope they keep in Project 06. Silver needs to be in more Sonic titles as a playable character and they should give him a few more abilities. The most useful in the franchise is pretty much everyone. They all contribute to the stories in some kind of way. The flight characters are the just useful like Tails for instance. I don’t think anyone is technically useless you just have to use your characters the right way for certain titles. They all help each other out or drive the plot and keep the series fresh and evolve Sonic. So yea a WIN!

Sonic Frontiers will add in new playable characters later this year because of Sonic Frontiers Roadmap to update this game during 2023.

MINOR SPOILER WARNING FOR PIZZA TOWER One game that I’d say pulls off the multiple playable characters really well is a very recent one: Pizza Tower. In that game, you mostly play as Peppino. However, there are certain levels where you momentarily switch to the duo Gustavo and Brick. This duo provides both great variety as well as familiarity as both movesets have an emphasis on momentum and risk (note: by “momentum,” I mean keeping your pace in-game [maintaining your combo, for example], not the physical definition). They feel familiar to each other, yet have completely distinct styles that complement one another and allow for fluidity between both. With this in mind, I do think Sonic games can receive similar treatment. The classic games do this almost flawlessly imo (I think you mentioned this in the video actually lol).

While I do respect your opinions and enjoy a lot of your content there are some things I have to say like for example just because some of the gameplay styles aren’t similar to sonic doesn’t make them bad like sure gamma is a very different character to play as but he has fluid gameplay and uniqueness to make him just as fun as sonic even if a little less or classic sonic with his fun 2D speedy platform game play and more Honestly A lot of the pics here seem to just be based off of are they similar to sonic or not like For example some characters you consider good like 06 Shadow or The Avatar you considered good with your main point being they’re similar to sonic While characters you considered bad like Amy gamma mechs treasure hunting Silver werehog and classic sonic while some of them having some good reasons to consider them bad every name I’ve mentioned has the main point being it’s not similar to sonic therefore bad you even admit stuff like gamma The werehog and classic sonic are fun but then decline them simply because it’s Not sonic but like where is the inherent issue with A character playing different I know later you bring up the argument of familiarity but a game like sa2 already solves that problem while keeping everyone different by having all 3 gameplay styles taught to you at the beginning (at least in the Hero story) and another issue I have is Half of the video feels subjective with you given your ultimate rating of all the characters but then the other half treats it as if most people have the same opinion i’m not saying change your opinions but you also have to consider that your opinions May not be the same as other people it could be something pretty minor however if it’s something like not liking gameplay styles A lot of people do like you have to consider The perspective of the general audience Also I know this is nitpicky as hell but I have to say these 3 things or else I will go insane 1: why is SA1 knuckles good but then SA2 treasure hunting bad I guess you could say valid reasons but you never give a reason 2: why did you Count team sonic I thought the point of this video was to rank people that aren’t sonic 3: The name of the video it’s kind of confusing like I get what it is saying but in the context of the video it makes me confused like even if every character had horrible gameplay they help stop multiple catastrophes so even then the answer is no (yeah that was nitpicky as hell and unnecessary) Conclusion: I really enjoy your content but I just wanted to give out those criticisms to anyone who thinks I’m hating on him i’m not I really do like his content anyways see ya
