Are Sony Colors Really THAT BAD?

Sony has been the laughing stock of crayon school. Worst color science of all camera brands for years. But they've come a long way in the A7S III. Today I want to test Sony vs other camera's color science using this new program called Cinematch. We'll turn the A7S III into a Canon R5, try Nikon and Olympus colors, a little Fuji and Panasonic as well. And test out Extrashot's S-Cintetone replica. This was filmed before the real one came out. Who has the most cinematic colors?

Only thing to discuss, is if the colors are correct straight out of camera. If they have pleasing skin colors, they are probably incorrect. We can make any colors in post, so why do we need the camera to fake reality for us? They can trow in all the luts they like, but there should always be a basic setting to replicate real life colors.

Neil Harbisson is this dude that was born with a very rare case of colorblindness, he sees no colors at all, everything is black and white to him. So he had this antenna attached to his head, with a light sensor that sends sound signals vibrating straight to his skull. Every color sends a different sound signal, so yes, he literally listen colors. And he said that every person he ever met sounded like some hue of orange.

ARRI Alexa is my favorite and in this video for some reason I actually prefer the standard S. Log Sony LUT colors (non-S. Cinetone) to the Nikon colors. I’ll show my way out 😉 Thanks for all the great videos.

I feel exactly the same. I think their picture profiles are most life like with a bit more saturation, while most other profiles looked lower contrast and a gamma that's too high, raising the mid tones and causing shadows to be expanded and to look washed out

I don't know why anyone wastes any time worrying about 'colour science'. All our images and videos are going to be viewed on a vast array of different screens that display colours differently - even two identical monitors will display differently according to how they are calibrated (if they are even calibrated at all). I have three monitors, an Acer, an Iiyama and a LG and it's impossible to get colours to look identical on all three, even with dedicated calibration hardware. On top of all that, everyone's eyes will see colors differently and then their brains will interpret the signals from their eyes differently too. So I ask you, why bother?

Addition, cinematch be Emulation mr. Hamstring. It be NOT the switch you cannit cinematch with conematch. For color be not software in exclusivity it be hardware in additon. That one was free.

Really enjoyed this Video. Olympus colors are the best and straight out of the camera. If your joy is spending hours fussing in post don't get Olympus. I am not saying that in a negative way, I know several people who really do like doing post. Personally, I don't. When indoors, with mixed lighting, I wont use auto white balance since Olympus is that sensitive to change. Or you could do a bit on using Olympus with a Ninja and get true 12 bit glory and see how that blows everything away :)

Kasey, here's a pro tip: Apply one of Joel Famularo's Phantom LUTs, the best LUTs mimicking ARRI Alexa look, and your a7sIII footage will look almost as good as Fuji.

Jepp ... they are the best. Just used them completely on a short film for a company that i filmed in slog3. The look is just great. With the right exposure and a black mist 1/8 it looks like an expensive film project.

The “who has the best color science” debate is very subjective and sometimes influenced by fan boy-ism. As a former Panasonic owner I found myself defending them more often than not. I switched because I had the opportunity to shoot and edit with a Canon and then with a Fuji, I saw a difference in the NLE. My take is that Panasonic colors are very good but maybe not as good as the ones I just previously mentioned.

Also, when one person says something about company A, if they have a large enough following, you will start hearing everyone singing the same tune eventually. People bash Sony and say that their colours are green, yet I watched a video the other day of a comparison between the A7s iii and Canon C70, the Sony actually had nice accurate colours whereas the Canon was noticeably green. A large portion of the comments claimed they liked the Canon better, even though it was the exact colour that people bash Sony for and the Sony was more accurate. Moral of the story is that people are full of shit.

I absolutely love the Olympus look. I used to shoot E-M10 once, absolutely loved it but needed very bright wide angle so moved to A7II.

@@randydean23 That's exactly the point. No consumer level displays is properly calibrated, therefore the colour science isn't crucial in detail. The dynamic range is more important, and the overall tone can be adjusted in post.

@@kenneth6102 Oh I totally agree. And if one were to shoot in either ProRes or especially Blackmagic Raw codec?? It would seem to me that as the only cameras that offer that feature the Nikon's are being slept on. But this being KZbin and me not wanting to engage in any sort of back and forth concerning the merits of a product with the general population of trolls on hand, I figured I'd just let it go, ya know?? And ultimately with all that being said the confirmation bias that is so pervasive won't allow folks to see past their own brand loyalty even when they're objectively completely wrong. It's gotten strange out in the land of image making and fanboy'ism is basically ubiquitous, but I hope something like sanity comes along at some point.... though I have my doubts.

@@randydean23 I think fanboy'ism isn't necessarily a bad thing. Those people tell you what exactly is good about the brand and that helps you choose or not to choose accordingly as long as you know what you're looking for. There are many types of photography, you use the tools that best suit your needs. Fanboys sort of guide you along the way. I actually went to a Sony A6600 APS-C because it ticked all my boxes. I either do photos for my fashion portfolio, photos/videos of my family outing/travel with kids. Fast auto-AF, good enough dynamic range, light-weight are the factors I looked for and the fanboys pointed towards or away from brands and products for me. A6600 is the first one I rent out to try, and I knew it's the right one for me although I tried out a few others to be safe. Know what you want, pay for what you need, stay within your budget.

It's like a lut in the colour grading tab. You film in your choice of log then choose what you shot in, and what you wish to change to.

"But nobody's orange here". You live in Canada, of course nobody is orange, you only see the sun for one week of the year. If you went to somewhere warmer, you would see people with much more colour in their skin. But overall the color doesn't matter. You can see a difference when you compare them side-by-side, but if you're just making videos, nobody gives a shit (other than that horrible huawei, and some of the bad gopro colors)

This was soo nice to watch compared to the phone footage. Those phones just hurt my soul man. F2 is a bit much though, 2.8 at 20mm is probably the best. Those ND filters seem like a dream and they looked great! Also - the S1H looks great in my opinion.

Thank you, thank you !!! This is one of the most useful contributions in the last 6 months (or more) in the "cinematic" community. ;) Sony colours are doable. They are all doable....it's a choice. Once you start watching, eyes get used to the colour scheme.....the annoying part of it is when a system is not-consist within that colour science...I think that's what Sony doing, some of the time. Colours are suddenly different when you film with backlight or when there is a big area with a mono-colour and Sony is trying to correct something. I think the way Sony works with colours is ok for stills but not for moving pictures ....it has the same kind of glitches in the white balance area. That means you have to do your own white balance with Sony, and not use the Sony colour science, also the S-cinetone. I liked Arri and Canon colour scheme. The Canon the most. I dont like the Huawei, that one is bad. The Fuji can be pleasing but its too much green, just like in the celluloid days. But I can imagine it can be used to document the lush greens of nature. Nikon has something different, something special. It looks like it's the most accurate one, with the somewhat muted colours..closer to the truth than the others..We don't have that much colour in our world. Is it possible that there is less detail in the shadows with the Nikon colour scheme?

Arri and Panasonic looked quite similar on my monitor, vivid blue skies and pink lips. Need to see some reds and greens to separate the diamonds from the cubic zirconia.

Reality has a lot of differentiated skin tones, cinematography uses a constricting narrow band filter with phase shift for skin tones to soften the harsh reality as with candlelight. In addition, the series connection of many light-refracting specific color wavelength resistors made of different types of optical glass in the lens affects the color spectrum frequency response even in the range of skin tones. The subjective tuning of the frequency amplitude response in the range of skin tones is an art like the tuning of the pleasant sound of a loudspeaker to the artificial reproduction of reality.

I really wanted to like the Nikon cuz I'm such a fanboy(and will continue to be), but it seemed a little greenish for my tastes in this comparison. The Arri looked perfect after all the rest of them. Second and third go to Canon and Olympus, in either order.
