When I got into mountain biking in the 80s there were lots of small builders making awesome steel bikes e.g. Fat City Cycles, Ibis, Fisher, Breezer, Bontrager, Richey, etc. It was awesome listening to guys like Tom Richey talk about his bikes, you could really hear the passion in his voice when he talked about his bikes. There is no question that steel bikes are worth it, no matter what the year. Steel is the perfect material and the extra weight is totally negligible for 90 % of cyclists. Weight is completely overrated.
@mumenrider677 Жыл бұрын
Some of us live in places where rust is a massive issue, and steel has a tendency to do so. Don’t get me wrong, steel is an awesome material that should be used more often, but there is still a time and place for aluminum and titanium imo (if you have the money for the latter lmao). Miss me with that carbon fibre BS though, 99% of people don’t need it.

@wjcferguson Жыл бұрын
Yep, weight is hugely overrated, however, simultaneously it's true that lighter weight makes a bike feel more eager and enjoyable. It barely will change your journey times, but the reduced inertia means it surges forward under you. Personally I find steel worth its minor compromises and don't expect to every ride anything else, but lightness is definitely still worth optimizing (among other criteria).

I just got an all steel Speedvagen Rugged Road that I setup with 35c road tires as an all-road bike and it feels nicer than any of my carbon road bikes. It's sluggish and heavier in comparison but rides so much nicer and can still go as fast with some effort. Steel is worth it if you can get past all the carbon marketing hype. My bike is still just 19 pounds which is good for steel and could probably get it lighter with a carbon wheelset. But if you don't care about all that then steel will give you a smooth, grounded ride. I attribute it more to a Mercedes with luxury performance opposed to a carbon road bike that may be more like a Lamborghini. To each his/her own, but steel is worth riding.

On the topic of tube selection and profile, 100%!!! The "Steel is real" tribe love their chant, but the reality is that a lot of steel bikes don't ride that great. I good well-spec'd tubeset makes all the difference. The conversation about Surly, but the reality is that their bikes may hold a massive market share, but they're not the same market, Ritchey and Rodeo-Labs are market competitors for this bike. These are premium non-custom frames.
@ian_pedalz Жыл бұрын
The same goes for carbon too. A lot of carbon frames are heavy and stiff as a board, but some people can’t get around carbon being the “best” although most ride like trash. I can see dyneema being the next big “revolution”. I think what ritchey,Gunnar, (was doing for Gunnar) and SOMA is probably more inline with sklar in terms of providing proper tube selection and not just run of the mill 4130 like surly.

@@ian_pedalz Every material can and will ride like crap w/ a bad geometry and poor tube specification/lowgrade material. The bad rep that aluminum gets is actually antiquated. The modern alloys and hydroforming techniques with the right design can make an exception frame. If you want to talk custom, most people have never rode a custom Columbus aluminum frame...its quite impressive! But you have stock frames from the likes of Mason that are exceptional. I ride Rodeo Labs Flaanimal 5.0, and yeah its good, but that bike purchase was more about the bike's attributes more aligning with what I was looking for in adjustable geo and how the bike would fit me.

Why would IS or Post Mounts be better than flat mounts? Anybody? He mentions that flat mounts often need to be faced, but couldn't IS or post mounts likewise be slightly 'off' also, due to manufacturing difficulties in making two parts 100 percent paralell? I mean, its not an easy task getting two parts to have a 0.001 degree tolerance, whether you be working with carbon or metal.
@PathLessPedaledTV Жыл бұрын
There is more and easier adjustability. Flat mounts were made for roadies that needed that clean aesthetic :)
@Lestat1795 Жыл бұрын
I really don’t get that part. Expensive frame but they don’t want to go that extra mile and face the brake mounts properly. For that price range the extra cost of a perfectly faced mount should be expected.
@visualpun650 Жыл бұрын
A lot of recent tech like tapered steerers, OS BB shells and flat mount seem designed for carbon fiber bikes. On steel bikes they tend to add a lot of weight. To drill two holes in a steel fork leg and want it to handle braking forces the leg has to be a lot thicker which not only adds weight but could make it ride harsher. You could also cast a piece and that would be heavy too.
@chrisnotyourbusines7739 Жыл бұрын
At least it has thru axles, unlike surly who build frames like in the 80's but demand 2020 prices. Having said that the inability of bike companies to source something as simple as a steel tube and making it THE differentiator in price is pathetic.
