I have thought about upgrading to hydraulic brakes but decided I might get myself into braking situations I shouldn’t have gotten into. 🤔

would be very interested to see this applied to "Shimergo" type drivetrain combinations - my cursory reading suggests the old Ergopower 10-speed shifters work with GRX derailleurs, but some adventurous soul would need to test it out

Doesn't work without modification. Campy doesn't pull the same amount of cable as Shimano does per shift.

If Trek and bicycle companies want to become really profitable, they need to push hard for proper urbanization for people, not car dependant suburban sprawl. Good luck with that though.

Please do a video on your thoughts of cable vs hydraulic. is it worth it? Ease of adjusts? Long term use? Love to hear your thoughts on it.

Great review. The geometry on this bike is ideal in my opinion. Good for road and gravel. I upgraded to a Whiskey cx carbon fork which helped reduce weight. Great all-rounder bike.

I'm a die hard cable brake cyclist. I just bought 180mm rotors for my mountain bike mechanical brakes. An upgrade from 160mm to see if I can get more stopping power and modulation or just ease of braking.

Nice review Russ! I am intrigued. Maybe a solution for a side phone pocket could be made that would clip onto the side ring and onto the rack at the bottom. I love the uncomplicated design but side pockets would be super handy.

I think you got lucky, because if you had shimano brakes. Sram brakes have more types of olives. sram Stealth-a-Majig its the most confusing one, but also the best one, also the last type, all other are just old types. Over the years all my bikes have sram brakes so i have enough olives and hose screws. So i think just going one brand for all bikes and have all the bikes hydraulic will help more in the future. I can do a bleed or a install new brake in couple of minutes after so many times i did it.

The cranks look awesome. Love the hollowtech standard but i want the chainring options that come with sram 3bolt dm chainrings. Shimano dm chainrings dont come in sizes and shapes im wanting without spending a fortune

Having worked at a shop as a mechanic, I noticed that the self adjusting function of the hydraulic calipers often times does not work properly. It relies on a small rubber seal on the piston to act as a return spring but this fails once the piston gets dirty. Also some brands basically don't have a reservoir so the system can't take up the slack and you have to replace pads before they're even worn down because the pads aren't biting the rotor. I have them on my mtb but might switch to cable if they give me trouble. It's just an xc bike basically.

I've had great performance from pretty basic mechanical discs like Avid BB5 and BB7. Apart from auto adjustment, I can't really see any clear advantage to hydraulic. There are lots of potential disadvantages and complications with hydraulic. EBB's can be a real pain. I have lots of experience from tandems and SSMTB. If this were mine, I'd set it with LocTite to prevent loosening and creaks.

Ortlieb will release in 2025 threaded thru axles to be able to install Ortlieb Quick Rack on frames with no eyelets (like tailfin) The optional kit already available to attach the rack to the seat stay is incompatible with carbon frames or narrow seat stays. Ortlieb will also provide 2 new sizes for their quick rack. L and XL (product numbers : 78110 and 78111)

I had the exact same problem when I installed my Deore 12 spd cassette! Be very careful aligning the free cogs, especially the smallest and take it easy tightening and checking that it all mates up and is secure on the free hub.

Really interesting. Thank you. I own a Black Mountain Cycles Monstercross bike, and I’ve always wondered if it was made by Maxway. Does anyone know if Mike Varley (Black Mountain Cycles) has (had) his steel bikes made there?

Good video we've all been there i think. Ive set up avid (dot fluid) and shimano (mineral). I made more mess with the much thinner dot fluid, It's almost like water in viscosity. And yes, no standards between brands with anything on the systems. Since getting joint pain i have hydros on most of my bikes as so easy to pull compared to cable and smooth on the lever. My road bike has cable tiagra 'rims' and i can live with that 😊

It is just a 24mm spindle. The hollowtech part is all about the crank arm. Cheaper 2 piece shimano cranks (deore and lower) have the 24mm spindle bit are not hollow tech because they have a solid forged crank arm rather than the hollowtech crank arm that comes on Slx and above. Anyway rant over. For some reason the hollowtech confusion always hits a nerve for me 😂

I thought why fuss with hydros when I can get questionable performance from cables, so I went with the why-not-both approach: TRP HY/RD. 😅 Jokes aside, I expect they’ll be just fine once I get them set up properly.

Truthfully they dont make kit that fits me due to my weight. I was lucky to find the one pair of capri chamois that I have. so out of necessity I just wear it under my normal workout clothes when I go on rides. Is comfortable but can be hot. I almost feel like I want to wear the whole kit at least once but more as a milestone of weight loss than for its actual purpose. Im not doing any races I just like to be outside and enjoy nature while I get some exercise.
