Teachers sometimes have biases towards certain students, but do their expectations actually affect whether or not the students succeed?

Who Believes in Me? The Effect of Student-Teacher Demographic Match on Teacher Expectations
www.sciencedire...
"Teachers are an important source of information for traditionally disadvantaged students. However, little is known about how teachers form expectations and whether they are systematically biased. We investigate whether student-teacher demographic mismatch affects high school teachers' expectations for students' educational attainment."
Being Honest About the Pygmalion Effect
discovermagazin...
"Rosenthal struck gold with his now-famous findings. His study survived an extraordinary storm of controversy to become one of the most inspiring and widely cited breakthroughs in the history of psychology. "The bottom line is that if we expect certain behaviors from people, we treat them differently - and that treatment is likely to affect their behavior," says the psychologist, now 82 years old and still collaborating with researchers on nonverbal communication projects at the University of California, Riverside."
Gender Bias in Teaching
www.education.c...
"A common response from teachers when asked about gender inequity in classrooms is that they treat all their students the same. There are two problems with this statement. First, students are diverse and have different learning issues, thus treating all students in the same way means that some students will have a better learning experience than their peers."

I would say no, because racism in most cases is based on intent. If you're unintentionally racist, is that really being racist or is it just being insensitive? Interesting topic.

Wow.... I can safely this was pointless.I have faced bias teachers, but it very rare and I talk to them about our problems. 99% of black, white, and whatever liked me, because I did the work, ask questions on a subject, and needing more help on homework. Calling every teacher racist and or bias due to skin color is silly. Plus, some of black students back in my high school days pulled the race card, because the teachers called them out on their BS. Bad teachers are a real issue, but not all of them is bad.

I don't know why so many people are saying Dnews is going Buzzfeed or SJW. They are simple stating the findings of various studies and recognizing the fact that we all have unknown and unintentional bias. This bias can be a huge issue in education because it means that certain minority groups are not given equal opportunity, which is unfair and something we strive to avoid.

Or why worry about even that when hundreds of species are put to the brink of extinction? But! But why worry about that either-OMG-when our planet gets more and more polluted every minute??? But thinking about it more carefully, why worry about that as well when God-knows how many planets are swallowed by their dying sun every second???? Why worry about a specific something when we can just make the problem broader and broader? Why worry when we can just take the words of good people, who backed up their opinions with science, and turn them into something that had absolutely nothing to do with the main topic? So, Chardonnay, if you want to know why people hate this video I’ll tell you why. I am a retired elementary school teacher and I am offended of everything this woman talked about. Everything she said was a lie. I taught for 25 years and I never saw a white teacher biased against a black student. In fact, I only ever saw white teachers treating black students, if anything, better than the white students for fear of being unfairly judged by people like the woman speaking on this video who speaks nothing but lies. I must say though in the 25 years of teaching I sure as hell did see a few black teachers treating white students with disrespect and contempt, but we’re supposed to turn a blind eye to that. And for those of you interested in the demographics, I taught two years in an affluent suburb of Chicago; I taught two years in a middle class area of central Indiana; I taught 21 years in two lower income schools made up of mostly Hispanic and black with about 20% white. Please don’t allow this lying, white leftist brainwash you. Teachers love all kids… even the kids who drive you up a walk. That’s why they are in it and willing to do it for such low pay. Yes there may be a few nasty teachers Black, White, and Hispanic who you might think are racist but really they’re not racist at all. They hate all people and are nasty to all people. This lying leftist is doing nothing but hurting black children by perpetuating the victim mentality instead of helping disadvantaged minority children to rise up and become successful. Please watch and listen to some of Candace Owen’s videos. She is one of the most intelligent people I have ever listened to and I believe she will be president of the U.S. one day. She would be appalled if she listened to this white woman speak on this video.

+Paramone Gaming Well my theory (the English term for theory) is that these sorts of people (the majority and in power) have a hard time empathizing with those who have no been so fortunate. For example, this video to me is complete common sense. Ever since elementary school I've experienced discrimination from my teachers that didn't make sense. I was suggested academic level courses instead of advanced while all my other friends who were white were suggested much higher courses. I'm now in University studying Biology on a $40000 scholarship and often think back to how lowly the teachers thought of me compared to my white classmates. But as a white fellow, one would not experience this. One would see everyone being treated equally. And then when someone brings up the bad things happening to POCs, they would get angry since they have never seen this for themselves. They can't believe it. "I get treated the same as everyone else. If anything they get treated better!" But this isn't always true. This is my theory, anyway. As for the last video you must remember that DNews simply presents studies and facts that we currently have. Why people would be angry at studies presenting facts and evidence I have no clue. Also surveys are one of the best ways to evaluate the human condition. And I'm going to ignore your comments on feminism since they appear uninformed.

As a first grader I had a very hard time learning to read and quickly fell behind my class. P, d, b and 9 were indistinguishable to me. I couldn't understand how people were able to read, I literally thought people had memorized the words beforehand; reading was just a big joke that I wasn't privy to. My first grade teacher plainly told me that I was not smart, that I would never be smart, and this was because I happened to be the darkest one in the class. I didn't get diagnosed with dyslexia until the 4th grade, wasn't properly treated until the 5th.

Jake Murrin Actually, even in math and science teachers grade boys down compared to gender neutral evaluators and standardized testing. While they will often grade girls up. So teachers actually show preference for girls across the board.
@SlyNine

Jake Murrin okay, thats not a study, this is what a study looks like. ftp.iza.org/dp5973.pdf. Without the actual study and methodology it's hard to pin point why that study diverges from countless studies that show female preference in over 60 different countries. In short, almost every study shows the opposite of what you're claiming. They show boys are being discriminated against, not girls. This study would be the exception to countless other studies. Probably comes straight out of gender studies. Far to many studies coming out of gender classes are using flawed methodology. Like the one that shows discrimination in stem fields, when the discrimination is actually against men.

Educational success has little to do with teachers. Racism can only be dealt with through politics. As long as there are enormous social inequalities people will get angry and hateful because this anger then turns to racism. Teachers being unintentionally racist is just the result of this unethical politics.

Okay, so the study mentioned first was *not* a longitudinal one? As a middle school teacher I want to know how the kids did after high school? Did the expectations of the teachers actually have an effect on the academic performance (career, success, not getting arrested, etc., whatever standard you want to use) of the students who experienced either a positive or negative teacher? And yes, teachers have bias but we try to adhere to the best professional standards to not let that shape our instruction.

Why is it when there is a a video about race or confronting racism there is a huge backlash from white people? Geez why does confronting the issue make you angry or does it make you feel guilty so you get angry? Or should no one talk about anything that doesn't affect you ? Should we ignore the issue so it never gets resolved because once again it doesn't alter your life? Are you only allowed to be the victim? Do you feel only other races should only be shed in bad light? Backlash because nobody confronts racism against whites, and some retards even claim that it is not racism when it is against whites. BLM activists harassed white people and even told tgem to kill themselves several times on public. There is evidence. But nobody gives a fuck. Cause whites are labeled "privileged group".Yet when it comes to racism against other races, even something resembling racism only very superficially, is claimed to be awful oppression. This is how SJW retardation works. Label some groups "privileged" and then you can harass and insult people of that group as much as you want, and when someone protests, just dismiss them with mocking like "oh your poor white man tears". Label some groups "oppressed" and then even when anyone of that group becomes offended by nothing, scream about "racism and oppression" everywhere

You know whats crazy white people will tell black people to forget the past all the time but I’ve never seen or heard white peoples tell Jewish people to forget the holocaust or hitler for that matter. White America would never say let’s stop celebrating Thanksgiving, 4th of July or any other holidays to commemorate the past. But they will tell us blacks folks to forget the past and move on. White people will also say Racism no longer exist because of laws they past for example.” Civil rights laws and Affirmative action laws”but yet when is the last time you recalled laws got rid of crimes entirely. Especially a thought moral crime yet we have laws on the books for rape, murder, child molestation, we even have laws for white color crimes yet crime still occur no matter what and those crimes have way harsher punishment then racism moral crimes. A racism moral crime is nothing more but a fine and being called out on it as a sort of public shaming but yet your not going to jail for racism nor get the death penalty for racism. But white folks would have u think that the racism issues have been resolved do to laws being pass in the past.

+DrSeanKennedy It's funny how fast you claim that comments are racist and that everything is going to turn bad. You cant fix racism by inventing the problems that exist. There is true racism, what doesn't help is just claiming its everywhere, you negate the seriousness of it and breed people who wont believe you the next time you scream racism. Nobody in the research or the video talked about the fact that maybe it is racist because of the statistical outcome of blacks in society. If only a small group of blacks will graduate of course the expectation of other blacks is going to be lower. The same thing happens with Cops and their brutality against blacks. Sadly progressives seem to never have a proper debate about this and claim anyone who opposes this a racist or a bigot.

There has recently been group of teenagers in Sweden who decided to leave the exact same essay to their teacher, the teacher didn't notice it was the same paper but gave everyone different grades so there has to be more studies into this because this is very real and I know that people get different grades due to ethnicity. This was something I talked about with my classmates in grade school and nobody even thought of actually trying to leave the same essay and see how differently people get grades but I'm glad that there are those who did and that highlight this. The worst is when a teacher intentionally bullies a student from a young age, my little brother went tot the same school as I did and I was praying that he would get a different teacher because I knew that she was a horrible teacher known for violent outbursts and often choosing white girls as her favorites. My little brother was bullied by the teacher for many years and I noticed it, we actually got the school inspection to do some more researching into my little brothers teacher and it turned out she wasn't even educated to be a teacher so she lost her job and we threatened to sue the school which instead decided a settlement was a better way to deal with it because the school knew they were fucked for hiring a teacher who isn't certified and who is known by many of her previous students as a bully

What's odd for me is many people find this to be news. Speaking as a recent graduate from a master's in education program, this is one of the first things they told us. A big part of finding a solution is being aware there is a problem. While it is tough to talk about, I believe it is our jobs as educators to keep this conversation about race open so we are aware of our biases and can strive to overcome them.

I'm very confused by the negativity towards this video. The whole idea of D-news is that they summarize studies and concepts. This video is no different than any other video where they picked a recent study to explain/analysis while providing extra information from other studies for contrast. The only reason, it seems, that this video is getting such a negative reaction is because of the topic; Race. Are you saying that D-news should avoid all studies of this topic because it upsets you? That studies to do with social bias aren't real science? Or that this type of bias is "obvious"? I, personally, never thought about the effect of teacher bias towards students of different races. Seeing the numbers rather than just making an assumption based on what I already know is nice. That is the point of science. That is the point of watching a show like this. Being exposed to the facts rather than opinions and assumptions. Of course, take what you see with a grain of salt (a critical eye) but the angry responses aren't conducive to anything beneficial.
