Are Teddy Blake Bags Worth It? Giorgia Palmelatto Review & Leather Deconstruction

This is the Giorgia handbag in Palmelatto leather, by Teddy Blake.
Overall, the craftsmanship is great, nice hardware, and this bag came in a lovely magnetic closure box.
The leather however, is anything but premium- compared to full-grain and top-grain leather bags with similar finishes in the luxury category. The "leather" is really a layer of suede coated with a plastic/vinyl like substance then imprinted with a fake grain pattern.
However, as long as you know the leather isn't top-notch, this seems like a good fit for those looking for the aesthetic of classic designer handbag styles under the 'affordable luxury' branding of Teddy Blake.

The quality is nearly unmatched with Hermes. Only a handful of small shops even begin to approach them with the quality of leather itself, and especially with the stitching and the edge glazing. It’s the price, not the quality, that’s outrageous about Hermes products.

Thanks for such a great breakdown. I have the Gigi in a faux croc. I love her very much and it's mainly used for work. The price and the fact that it comes with the shoulder strap makes it better than a birkin for me and it's really cool to see what things look like underneath the surface. What you are doing is great! Please make more videos on ALL of the high end bags that influencers buy and then trash and then sell. Make your videos 20 minutes or more so you make more € from KZbin. Take us through more of the process of buying it, the history of the brand and then go into destruction mode and then wrap up. People like a story. Give us a story. I believe coated suede is probably too weak to handle easy restoration without intensive reinforcement... If he could tear it that easily, I feel like leather fillers would cause additional stress in the surrounding areas. The type of damage would be the biggest factor I guess. You can fill and color like, edge scuffs but that always looks off to me. Idk if you've ever tried to patch silk, but it's a pain and the repair shows easily. This seems similar.

I don’t know how I stumbled across your channel, but I’m glad I found it. I’m not really into luxury bags. I own one Coach purse and two Kate Spade purses. I will keep these purses until after they fall apart. (That’s what I’ve done with all of my pleather no name bags. I’ve used them past the point of falling apart.🤦🏾‍♀️) The Coach purse was purchased at an outlet. My first Kate Spade was purchased with encouragement from my daughter. The second was just purchased during a “secret sale” event. I purchased these bags because I like how they look. I’m glad that I don’t feel the need to constantly buy expensive, “luxury” bags. So many aren’t worth it. When my bags fall apart, I will definitely find an independent leather crafter. Are Coach and Kate Spade considered luxury? I have no idea. You can tell me they’re not. I don’t care if they’re not luxury. I like how they look and that’s the most important thing.

Coach and Kate Spade are probably considered mass market. Widely available. However I give Coach bags an edge or KS b/c they concentrate on bags mainly and has goes back to the 1940s as a leather goods family company. Wear what you love, no matter what anyone says. I'd take a Coach over a Teddy Blake any day.

Constructive criticism here: I don't like the stabbing of the bag. Anyone out there can trash/destroy a pricey bag. What I like to see is your methodical undoing of the bag. While I appreciate these videos and the intent to educate the general public on leather goods and accessories. I think your estimates are very generous. Based on your video, it is highly unlikely that this is calf suede. It is in all likelihood, split, from a cow hide (meaning female bovine which has birthed multiple times) or, at best, it may be split from a bull hide. Today, wet blue drop splits from European hides are at less than 0.75 USD/sq.ft. If you buy South American, they may even be as low as 0.25-0.30 USD/sq.ft. Assuming a finishing cost of even 1.00 USD/sq.ft, the “leather” may cost about 2.00- 2.50 USD/sq.ft. The only reason drop splits are even at this price level expensive today is because of the demand from the protein industry, whereby most tanners split the hides in the lime and sell the split, rather than incurring the additional cost of producing full substance wet blue and selling drop splits. If someone paid USD 4.00/sq.ft for this, they have no idea how to source leather. Assuming this is a brand that sources large quantities of the same leather and use the same thing across product categories, it likely cost much less. Given that most of their products are embossed leathers, it’s within the realm of probability to assume this is what they do. Second, USD 110 for materials and labour???? I understand this is your estimate if you had to ask an artisan to make this, but there is no way it should cost that much, at best it maybe USD 30-40 for the materials and labour. Eva sheets, plastic fibre, leather board, foam- these are not expensive backers. The metal trims likely came from China, and would cost less than 5 USD (2 D-rings, 2 dog hooks, 4 metal feet, 2 studs on the strap, the locks). They may have used a good zipper (YKK or Riri) and if it is a no.3 or no.5, gold finish, even assuming the excella range from YKK, it is not gonna be more than a quarter of a meter and that might translate to about 2 USD including the runner. The microfine lining, if it's of a high quality might be about 10 USD/meter and this bag probably uses about 60 CM, so about 6 USD. The labour cost cannot have been more than 30 USD even if as they say, "it is 100% made in Italy". This is still a line production and not single artisan made, As I'm sure you know, today many Italian companies employ immigrants from China, Bangladesh and other places and the cost of labour is comparatively cheaper. If your estimate is based on how much it would cost a single artisan to make this, well, there's an inherent flaw in that logic, because if you simply used better leather, a majority of the backing materials become unnecessary. With the right tannage, a high quality calf skin or bull hide with a 1.2-1.4 mm or 1.4-1.6 mm substance will provide enough temper to do away with the need for multiple layers of backing material. The leather cost would go up quite a bit, the labour cost may remain the same, but the quality of work and the end product will be much much better if it was made start to finish by a skilled artisan using the right raw material. A more realistic estimate for the landed cost of this bag including packaging, duty, etc will be south of USD 85.00. This is assuming that the bag is really made in Italy. Again, I do appreciate that you’re trying to educate people and this is not a gotcha comment. My intent is solely to put a more realistic estimate to what it might cost to mass manufacture a “luxury” product. I work in the sourcing side of the leather business (raw hides on) and I know the supply chain costs inside and out.
