Are The Automatic Cars Bad For Hills?

Absolutely, automatics are best to drive in the hills.Uphills are no problem at all,but downhill I found this issue that the gear shifts up and the speed increases. In both the LR Discovery and the automatic thar I engaged the hill descent control while coming down hill,but putting them in the manual mode never came across my mind. Will surely give it a try.Thanks

I drove downhills in this vehicle, even in automatic mode, 4th gear holds till 60 -65. If you want to drive under 40 Kmph downhill that’s when you can use manual mode. So no problem in automatic mode down the hill. I think during uphill, the automatic gearbox over revs a little. That’s when I use manual mode.

In simple words...if you have good experience then nothing can beat the fun of manual but if you not so confident and experience then auto is best for you.. But your logic is right 👍

Its not actually true. Telling by my experience, the same roads tired me way more in manual cars with rest days while this trip was Delhi-Srinagar-LEH-Spiti-Delhi and was done in 8 days including rest days and fatigue was way lesser than just doing straight up spiti in same number of days. We just keep talking about skills. Skills are needed yes but most drivers with equivalent years of driving experience are on par, I did these terrains in front wheel drive manual cars too but its more tiring than automatic.

@@DCVExpeditions I live in Dubai and it's been 19 years that I drive an automatic AWD Ford Edge. As you mentioned it's less tiring to drive in an automatic vehicle. I find myself being in more command of the vehicle while driving in cities or highways. We have a Mahindra dealership here and the sad part is Thar is not launching here yet, we have XUV but no Thar. once it is launched, will surely go for it and test its limits on sand dunes.

What fun is there is driving manual bro? Constantly juggling between clutch and gear stick on a 10-12 hour drive is your definition of fun? This is nothing but elitist speak. We all know how to drive manual. There is no fun in it. Automatic actually allows you to enjoy the drive and the scenery rather than focusing on some mindless repetitive task.

The talks are related to over use of brakes, not about avoiding use of brakes. Brakes are your last line of defence and if it somehow fails, you are dead there.

This is what happens when you are not trying to understand a thing. The discussion is about controlling the increase in speed of an automatic vehicle by keeping the feet all the time on the brakes, the brakes can overheat and can kill you. Same is true for manual cars too if you are driving in a gear where the speed is more than needed and driver keeps the brakes pressed all the time. Brakes are there but at 5 kms high hills, abusing brakes is the last thing a driver should do. Ask them who did this mistake and you will know the meaning of this discussion.
