I was googling opponents that my training partner was going to fight at blue belt pans 24'. I noticed one of the guys had actually won blue belt pans 18'. Not competed in. He WON it at blue.

Thats insane to me. That dude should be 2 stripes in to a brown belt by 24'. Unless he quit for 6 years. Lol

It's really hard to argue, but it seems obvious that winning pans or worlds at a belt level should warrant an instant promotion. Beyond that, it's largely a matter of timing. If white belts with less than two years of training are winning, I wouldn't have a problem with that. However, if 3-4 year white belts are winning consistently, then yes, I would say that constitutes sandbagging.

This is where it all starts. Up to Heath when to promote his people, generally if they are successful in the comp scene it should mirror the IBJJF minimums. Hope to see PSF representation at CJI.

theres no standardized approach to belt promotions really so its difficult but i think its a combo of a few things. great coaches with strict promotions, people with other grappling backgrounds and samdbaggers

Faced Dayton at jj con 2023. Hard worker and his wrestling was hard to defend. Doesn’t look like much in this video but trust me when I say hes a lot stronger than you think 😂

This is what happens when you have a white/blue belt “world championships”. I wouldn’t necessarily call them sand baggers because it’s basically the norm

Elite level coaching with a sprinkle of natural talent will make it seem like they're sandbagging. But truth is, some people just progress faster with proper investment and guidance.
@curraja146 ай бұрын
progress... yes. to the next belt level.
@IrvinLep2 ай бұрын
If they progress faster they should get a blue belt, not stay a white belt for 3-4 years so the academy can claim more accolades
@odinzraider5912 ай бұрын
@@IrvinLep It's not Heath that keeps them at white belt. It's the ibjjf and thier minimum time requirements at each belt. If they get promoted before the minimum, the ibjjf will suspend them from competition.
@IrvinLep2 ай бұрын
@@odinzraider591 last I checked, there is no minimum time for white belts. There is for blue belts, but it's 2 years, which is really not a lot (I am willing to bet that most blue belt champions have had their belt for longer)

@@IrvinLep You might be right. Frankly, I don't like the ibjjf ruleset so I've never competed for them. So I'd trust you'd know better than me.

Winning pans or worlds might be worth a promotion. Obviously everyone’s different but withholding a promotion until someone wins pans or worlds is sandbagging. I’m a hobbyist who competes sometimes. I’ll be held to a different standard than a full time competitor.

Are people who are newish blue belts and have purchased the White Belt Curriculum still eligible to test under Heath?

Did the ref in the big guy match at the end explain why he stopped the match or what he saw? Seems like neither competitor thought there was a tap in the slightest. Tough way to lose the pan finals for the other guy even if he was in a bad spot.
@christianmaddox176 ай бұрын
So he did that twice with another one of our competitors from OH. He just wasn't a great ref man they have long days though so I'm sure it's hard to be consistent. With that being said though the other guy didn't tap via armbar either (the competitor from OH) but the ref said he did as well.

How often are these white belts who are winning the tournaments training? Are they just hobbyists training 2-3 times per week after woork or are they training more like full time athletes?
@StarcraftDr6 ай бұрын
I think there can be a pretty big training time disparity between hobbyists No one’s really making money at low level (I assume) and so yeah I bet you get a huge spectrum of commitment with a few guys, like PSF guys, looking to stick with it for the long haul. Cool to see their commitment pay off
@AlitaBrooks276 ай бұрын
Taylor and Dayton train every day. Sometimes more than once a day. Big Paul has 3 kids, a job, and trains a few days a week. Everyone is pushed to the level they can maintain and we all work really hard regardless of “hobbyist” or full time status.

I never knew high level competitions at white belt even took place, but yes by definition everyone winning and most of those competing at them are sandbagging. Nothing but their word that they shouldn't be at a higher belt.

I’m still not even really sure what this debate even is lol you’ve got three white belts here who all won the pans, which is the biggest tournament a white belt can win, and immediately got promoted. I don’t think people should just get their blue belts for attending a certain number of classes. Especially if you want to compete at a high level. Proving your ability on the competition mats is the secret sauce. If youre mad our white belts are better than yours, maybe invest more time in them and don’t treat them like they’re second class citizens. Our base is strong and we’re only getting better and better.
