Reading all tjr comments I find the ones 'complaining' about things most amusing. They have here what I consider THE best channel on KZbin... And they complain about how you dress? Or that this isn't the way they think it should be done? Amazing. As for me, I'll watch THE best wagon/wheel craftsman and say "THANK YOU for the great videos."

It is amazing to watch as you explain the changes an inch forward or an inch back favors the geometry and operation of the running gear. Two uniquely different wagons can be merged into one naturally functioning unit. You masterfully pull it all together to work well and appear like a beautifully weathered tool for the ranch. I know the owners will display her proudly.

One of the fun things to watch is Dave staying ahead of the Previous Builders, "I'll think I'll do this here in this build" scenarios" Now days we call them "Fudging technics" all kidding aside its amazing the amount of engineering that went into a simple thing like a wagon. we're finding out they were a lot more technically designed than we imagined for sure! thanks for sharing.

Hi Dave, and Diane, I think the color of this sheep wagon looks very nice. The "new" undercarriage really sets it off too. I Look forward to seeing how you will fit it out down the line, and if you will be using cotton canvas to cover it. I'm really enjoying this series. I had fun watching you with your cattle this week. notice how the wood on the wheels shows it's age by the raised grain where the early wood wore away and the late wood didn't, that same effect can be achieved on new wood with a light sand blast using a soft media like walnut shell
@Reziac11 ай бұрын
I noticed that. Wondered if it would get a matching up. A light scraping with a wire wheel also works.

Hello, You're doing a great job and I look forward to the next video every week. Where I come from, we say that those who advise don't pay, but I've noticed that the body of your shepherd's wagon, even when stained grey, still looks new because it's too smooth. This is simply because wood doesn't just age in terms of its color, but also, and more importantly, because over time, some of the rings in the wood become deeper. The reason is simple: in a tree, wood formed in spring is more porous and therefore lighter in color than wood formed in summer (denser and darker). This is what makes it possible to distinguish the annual rings that give the tree's age. The lighter part of the tree is therefore more sensitive to the cumulative effects of time and weather, which is why it becomes hollow. This effect can also be seen on the added rolling part. Our cabinetmakers are accustomed to mechanically ageing new wood during restoration work. You can achieve this by simply brushing with a brass brush. I've used a computer translator and I hope my words haven't been too distorted. I apologize for this.

An idea for you… Have you thought about giving the new timbers a light sandblasting to remove some of the wood grain, and make the timber look older/weathered, before treating and matching colour etc… I’ve seen it done for large wooden doors when they require replacing (as in castles and other similar places), and it really works, looks like the real thing… So I imagine when you are trying to make something new look old, it may well be the answer to your prayers…

Fascinating build and attention to detail. One quick question though - isn't there a way to introduce a stop on the turning wheels to prevent future wear on the box from the wheels when turned to one extreme or the other?

Wouldn’t it help with the weathered appearance if You ran a soft wire wheel over the new wood to kind of carve away some of the softer parts of the wood? I know, it’s a task nobody really wants to spend 2 days working on but wouldn’t it look very authentic?

Dave, a friend of mine suggested I use gearbox oil for preserving wood. I tried it on a board on which my wife puts her pot plants outside, and it works well. It just has a very strong smell, which lasts about two weeks. I used the manual oil, which has the same color as linseed, but the auto oil has a reddish color. Maybe it will come in handy?

HI, I was wondering if in addition to staining to age the lumber if you also might distress it to show wear and tear from years of use? I've seen this done to old flooring after new patches were install and it was very effective, but it was done before the stain to highlight the scratches and dings.

Just curious about something… When you made the sand boards to go over the running gear, why did you cut the top plates in small sections and run the grain front to back rather than just cutting a longer piece to run side to side?
@paulbishal917711 ай бұрын
My thinking is if you ran them with a longer piece running side to side then if one of them developed a split it could run all the way across. In the rear he only nailed 1 of the 2 x 2s so if the sand board split the split part of the top plate and the other 2 x 2 could fall off. In the front there is only 1 2 x 2 (which he nailed) so the split part of the top plate could fall off. Depending on where it split you could end up with little to no sand board.
