Ration meter for the crew effects crew happiness. If it drops too low the maneuverability, and speed, of the ships drops, including in battle. It will also make mates that don't like you steal a ship. The round earth society is a way to increase your luck. You have to donate about 51% of your wealth (including what's in the bank) to increase your luck 1 point I believe. I can't recall exactly what it was to max out but I believe the minimum amount to trigger it was 6 gold. IIRC it takes something like 8 doublings to guarantee max fortune so around 1,600 gold, but it can take more. The best thing to do is buy up tons of silver, carpet, art, or gold, fully load your ships with food then start donating 51% repeatedly with what's left, ideally enough to finish in one shot. It is a hidden stat, the only way to check it is to go to the fortune teller and ask her to read your fortune. She'll say different things based on your luck stat. You want "What a strong fortune, you have nothing to fear in this life." That's 100% then you study to maintain it. Luck increases odds of getting the best cannons, and figureheads, at the secret shipyards that sell them, when fully upgraded and aligned with you. Cannons are self explanatory and the figureheads ward off storms and creatures. It also improves outcomes in duels, mates liking you and tile against them leaving you. Never put a mate with bad luck in charge of a ship (they drown in storms and you lose the ship) or let them navigate/negotiate. You can't increase their luck.

Agreed. Would love a Stardew type updated version of this with the dueling system from this more or less the same. Improved ship combat and customization. The current multiplayer online thing does nothing for me like this gem did. Hated the hurricanes though and if you fail game over. I also like PTO 2 also made by KOEI.

I bought this "random" game at a GameStop in the mid-90s at our local mall from the bargain bin for just $5 on a whim. I am so glad that I did since it is such an amazing game and is literally the best $5 I have ever spent in my life. I remember me, my brother, and my sister playing this game for hundreds of hours learning all about geography, ships, navigation, history, commerce and overall just the world in general. Such fond memories and I am so thankful for everything. :)

Being Portuguese, and a João, it amazes and baffles me that this game exists, one about sea exploration at that. It's absolutely surreal. The game series is known in Japan as Daikoukai Jidai, and the later sequels after New Horizons were never released outside Japan until the Uncharted Waters Online MMO which got released worldwide in 2011. I remember the PC versions of the first two games though. Edit: There is a new game in the series called Uncharted Waters Origin, which was released worldwide days ago, and was released for Steam, iOS and Android, made by Motif and published by LINE Games, officially licensed by Koei Tecmo, and made for the 30th anniversary of the Daikoukai Jidai series, apparently.

This game is my favorite SNES game of all times and I made sure it was my first purchase when I started rebuilding my collection. The ration system does work and it changes how pleased/displeased your crew is and prolongs the depletion of your food and/or water. If your crew is not very happy they are more likely to both die and leave when you discover artifacts and animals while exploring villages. If you let them get waaay too displeased, the will mutiny which sucks. The round earth society is a little bit weird, but in order to unlock the rare "luck"-based figureheads and cannons you need to have donated a significant amount to them - not sure exactly how it works though. Also, I read somewhere that donating to them decreases the chances of running into fog and/or sea witches etc. not sure if this is true though.

New Horizons is definitely worth it. It's a game that sits proudly in my collection. It does feel like there is a bit too much depth in there, so it's a game that you have to really be willing to sink time into in order to feel like you know what's going on. Which makes things like playing Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, or Mega Man X very appealing in comparison to our simple, lizard brains. "Go right, kill bad guys, don't die!" Nothing wrong with that format of game at all, of course, which is why it's so appealing, but sometimes it's nice to invest some time and really get lost in a deep game. Great video as always.

As someone who's let's played both games, I'm glad you gave this series some attention, and treated it fairly. Yeah, the first game was definitely very bland and not particularly well presented. Everything worked, and when you understood everything, it went smoothly enough, but getting there was way too hard for most folks. The second game got it right. Still had a learning curve, but it wasn't as steep as the first game (except for the trading mechanics), and it was way more fun to learn to play. Great stuff. Looking forward to going through some of your other videos.

I was fortunate to play the original UW with my mother and grandfather when I was a kid. My grandfather knew almost everything about the game so I didn't have to worry about esoteric stat values. He also had some helpful advice, such as "If you sail to africa during the winter months you'll rarely encounter a storm, if ever" After watching this video just now...I understand why people would be turned off by the original, especially with the lack of detailed info in-game.

2:10 What difference does setting stats make? Keep rolling, and you'll get an exceptional roll, and have a crap ton of extra points to distribute. You can get 100+ unallocated points to distribute or more. There is a similar roll process in a few of the Wizardry games, where you can roll enough points to get an elite character (eg, samurai, ninja, lord) when creating your starting party.

This game was so awesome! One of the best for SNES. There was so much you could do and be in this game, it was literally living the journey of life. You could be a merchant, start your business from scratch then build it up, buy the the ships to transport goods all over the world. You could be an adventurer, explore the world, your travels paid by guilders. You could be a war hero, earn ranks from royalty from successful duels and battles against warring nations. You could be a pirate, be against everyone, fight and kill your competitors and take everything they own. This game had everything!

The crew rations is rather simple -- you can reduce rations to save food for longer voyages, but it slowly degrades the crew's health/strength. Say for example, you've got a ship and crew that uses 5 food per day, you can cut rations by 20% and use 4 food per day, but you'll notice if you bring up the L/R buttons while sailing that the crew's health% starts degrading each day.

New Horizons was one of the few games my wife and mom could be in the same room with without losing their shit. Between the 3 of us we had the entire game mapped out front to back and side to side for all the different characters. My mom did like to play but she always seemed just as happy to sit behind us with a notebook writing down every thing we found and calculating the best trade routes for us to make money. She had a list of trade routes to take to go from zero to hero without ever needing to invest in ports to make them better and then she had a list of trade routes that you could use if you did invest.

My strategy was to go to Lubeck and stock up on silver, sell it all in East Africa and invest until they sell gold (fun fact: the “gold” commodity was actually “slaves” in the original version. Changed for obvious reasons). It doesn’t take much investment. Fill up on gold, sail to Japan, sell the gold, restock on silver, return to East Africa, sell the silver, fill up on gold, return to Lubeck. Repeat. You’ll have a fleet of Tekkosen and Full-Rigged ships in no time. I even had a bunch of ships stored at every capital. Copper hulled La Reales for max speed, or barges/frigates for max capacity. To make it fair once my guys had ridiculous combat levels, I’d sometimes sail a fleet of sloops or even light galleys. Side note: the “Round Earth Society” is used to raise your hidden luck stat. Donating 51% of your gold on hand will raise your luck by 1 level. It’s obviously better to do this when you’re relatively poor. Like “slaves” being changed to “gold” the Round Earth Society was simply the “Church” in the original version.

If I remember correctly, studying at The Round Earth Society increased a player's luck stats. It was a fill-in for a church/mosque, with studying being analogous to praying, that probably allowed KOEI to follow Nintendo's rule on avoiding religious imagery while staying true to the theme of a game set in the Age of Exploration.

You cannot judge games from 30 years ago against today's hardware and games. In 30 years you'll see why. When these games were released they were extremely enjoyable BECAUSE they were so huge in scale and depth. The interface for most gaming on console has and still is clunky, even with today's controllers. The depth though that they put into these early titles is impressive and was hours and hours of fun.

It's open world...ish. You can explore the vast world to the point of losing grip with the game's objectives, but there's not much in the way of side quests. It's more like a true sandbox where your imagination fills the gaps.

Been playing game 1 since I was 4, and only last year picked up game 2 for the first time. My biggest criticism is that 2 of the characters, Joao and Ernst, can't go to Japan at all until late in their story arcs. It sucks, because I liked Joao's story the most, of course, as a fan of game 1. Like, you can GO there, sure, sail all around it and even find the far-away supply port of Hokkaido, but you cannot discover Sakai or Nagasaki until the story gets there, and it was a huge blow to me, so much so that I put down the Joao scenario entirely and then did not play Ernst when I went to make sure he could go there before playing him, but discovered he couldn't That said, for best "open world" experience, I liked Pietro, even if he is a wuss in battle. Storywise, you pretty much just gotta pay off an EZ debt, then you are free to screw around as much as you'd like, with little direction. Of course, you CAN do that with anyone, but from a roleplay perspective, I found his scenario made the most sense for it. Technically, you will want to adventure to "win", but I had a great time trading. The game highly incentivizes returning to Europe every 6 months in this game, so you can renew your tax-free permit for trade in ports your country "controls". At least insofar as you wish to engage with trade. The "discoveries" as they are called in game, are a really good innovation as well, and even add another layer to the educational content of the game. Catalina is also prohibitive, since she technically has no country, even if you turn yourself in to the crown and remove your enemy status. So, when you invest in any given port, the best you can do is *remove* other percents, bringing the port to total neutral. That said, there IS a "defection" mechanic in the game, wherein you pledge your allegiance to a different nation than the starting one, and I did not think to try and see if I could use that to give Cat a home. Biggest issue with Ali is having a home port of Istanbul lol, though I was very fond of the straight-up trader story he had. Pietro gives you the best of all worlds overall tho, with Genoa being only somewhat out of the way, compared to the 3 (4 if you count Cat) characters who have ports on the Atlantic coast of Europe. Funny story, I have noticed that if I do not play as Italy, as a nation they have never managed to compete at all without me-- everyone else has made plays for power and ports from time to time, but Italy just never gets past Genoa without my direct control. Actually similar to UW1, where if you did not do the work yourself, Portugal would always be the poorest of the 3 countries. Taken altogether, it gives me the impression that Italy was maybe the scenario designed for the more "Open world" minded players. Otto you could make an argument for too, I suppose, but he is such a crappy sailor it is painful sometimes lol. It is a hard trade-off to make for the privilege of a homeport in Northern Europe. I could say a lot more about 2, but if you played 1, you will love it- everything is there that you missed and more. Worst I can say in comparison, is that I liked the portraits better in UW1. There were less M8s to hire overall, but their names, portraits, and stats all painted a complete picture of each of them. and they all felt very distinct from one another to me.

New Horizons is definitely a fun game. I think the Round Earth Society is more involved in the Otto's (guy from Holland) story, where I believe you can go there and learn things as well as provide information. Been a while since I played the game, and I usually go with Ali's story for the interesting trading system.

Yes, KOEI games like this, Gemfire, etc. age well because the art and music are top notch. They'll always be worth looking into because of that. The game mechanics and enemy AI weren't always that great even when they came out, but they're expansive enough to give you a lot of gameplay options and make you feel like you're in control. The fact that they're strongly character based gives the games a lot more personality than other games in the genre where you are just moving around faceless, generic units. New Horizons is the game where everything KOEI wanted to do came together. It's maybe the only game that successfully melded classic RPG and turn based strategy genres.

To me,, Uncharted Waters: New Horizions is the best game on the SNES. It is better than Final Fantasy 6. It is better than Star Fox. It is better than Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. It is better than Chrono Trigger. When I was i child, my dad rented UW:NH from blockbuster for a month straight and I loved it so much that we asked if we could buy it. The clerk said no... but if we just never returned it we could just pay the replacement fee and never be bothered again... so we did! If you love age of sail boats (and you do stop lying to yourself) you will love this game too. It is better than The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. *fight me*. ~♡

I think l rented New Horizons when l was younger and I was blown away by how immersive it is. So much content for a SNES game, it's nuts. I liked Catalina the best. Not only is she easy on the eyes, but it's fun being a pirate and being loyal to no one. Just be a predator and destroy whatever looks like an easy target. Then loot and plunder to your heart's content.

New Horizons and Brandish were the only Koei games I used to rent. Inindo's not bad either. Beyond those games, it's much harder to get into the SNES Koei library. New Horizons is definitely the best of the bunch and easiest to get into, IMO. Great video.

Speaking of which, the first Koei game I ever played was the NES version of Genghis Khan in 1989 as a Blockbuster Video game rental. When I found the SNES Koei game Genghis Khan II, I nearly lost mind. Went right out and bought a used version in 1993. That one's even better than the first one.

0:15 Is it just me or is Aerobiz's boxart bloody amazing? Though, if I saw that on the shelf as a kid I'd be like "why is this a game"? But I have a game called Aeroporter on my 3DS so the idea of a game that I'm guessing has to do with airports isn't so crazy an idea to me anymore.

The Round Earth Society is on consoles only. On the PC versions, it would be the Church or Mosque (depending on the port) if your character worships and donates a certain amount of money (around 10% or more of thier funds) It's supposed to improve thier "luck" at sea.

Did you know the item shops have special deals if you enter at 2 or 2:30 AM? Also, round earth donations allow manipulation of the luck stat. Donate 51% of your money at a time for the largest increases. It looks at money in your pockets, not money in the bank or those thousands of lots of gold that will inevitably become moored if your playing as Joao or Ali...
