George Conway is ‘the man’ of this time in history! Some people are born for ‘a time such as this’ and George is the first of a valiant breed. He is almost a biblically inspired character. He’s no wimpy pretty boy but he has the strategic smarts to lead. He is like Gideon speaking truth when it is most needed with a micro band of warriors! He puts his money where his mouth is. He had to stand up to the mother of his children to speak truth. That is commitment to truth. He calls a filthy liar out to his face. He urged E. Jean Carole to stand up for justice and he stood with her all the way. Stand with him and watch things change. Go George. Integrity is beautiful.

He could see through the bull. After voting for Trump in 2016 I saw all kinds of stuff I did not like in the beginning but pushed it aside, but after a while especially during Covid I saw plenty I could no longer stand. I thought that Fauci was a very dark character from the start could not believe that Trump let him run the entire show. The "warp speed" vaccines was the last straw. He did not stop the extreme Left, he made them stronger. He destroyed the GOP, took them over and orders them around. If they don't do as he says they are out adn are treated like Lepers by MAGA. So the Republicans have two choices right now - resign and lose your position or become a mindless Trump zombie. Very few if any are courageous enough to stand up and fight.

Ford's biggest controversy/scandal was pardoning Nixon. In hindsight, holding Nixon legally accountable might have changed where we now find ourselves. Or maybe not. Nixon's major legacy is a sense of cynicism about government and politics. "Government is the problem, not the solution." < cough > Ford was a decent man and a relatively okay president, but pardoning Nixon was his biggest error in judgment. It haunts us to this day.
@judileeming15895 ай бұрын
I would also say that the release of demographic predictions in the 1980’s has brought America to this state. 40 years ago demographics showed that WASPs would be in the minority about now seriously undermining their control of power and that sparked the planning to move towards an authoritarian government. The birth of social media and a the emergence of a corrupt populist gave them the perfect “tools” to manipulate people and undermine the electoral process.
@ma44505 ай бұрын
Actually, it was Reagan who brought in the "government is the problem" mentality. Nixon would have had a pretty good legacy if he hadn't blown it up out of sheer paranoia and malice. The EPA; opening up diplomatic relations with China; restoring autonomy to Native Americans; the Endangered Species Act---the Republican right despised him for those things.
@nomadpurple61545 ай бұрын
If you think there was not cynicism of government and politics before Nixon then you clearly know little of history or have any appreciation that people of the long gone past were just like us. Do you think everyone loved every US president before him? Did you not know of the slimey backroom deals they did? The founders were not a pantheon of Gods, they were politicians, rich men, greedy to have power for themselves (see the lack of rights for women or those of different backgrounds).

The whole CNN scene to me, as you've stated, examples PRECISELY the problem with mainstream media and journalism (what's left of it) today: they treat LIES and LIARS as meriting equal air time so viewers can 'decide'... but that isn't what it means to present a balanced set of opinions or ideas for people to choose between. LIES are not valid positions meriting journalistic deference, and BALD FACED LIARS are not guests brought on to present alternative opinions/views so viewers can make up their own minds. Liars should be asked to leave, the moment they begin their spewl of nonsense and lies, and viewers should be told that their guest was asked to leave because their programs are about educating on the facts and presenting different opinions about what those facts mean, or what should be done about them, if anything. Politicians would stop lying if they were treated this way on news and journalism media spots. We could then get back to the "actual" legitimate debate around solutions to facts, not whether the fact, or the lie, are more appealing to some in an audience.
@Itried20takennames5 ай бұрын
Except with the Internet, there is no real stop gap that can keep the liars out….not even journalists. The liars and fringe beliefs can make a YT channel, website, podcasts, etc. that look about as professional as the mainstream media. And these fringe and fake views have an audience….so some one will take advantage of that and tell people what they want to hear. I think the best is a system where people can point out lies or errors on in the news, submit them online and if the journalist or media can’t point to good faith evidence why they thought something was true, there is a moderate but escalating, percent-of-income fine for each lie, which will pay for an adjudication committee of journalists/fact checkers, and to those that submit the lies. Basically, the news channels need to get increasingly expensive “tickets” for each lie, and the various media can be ranked for honesty by the number of these tickets.

Modern maga/GOP (and yes, there is no longer a difference) knows that the future will not embrace the party that wishes to cling to the past. Modern GOP realizes they will not win elections unless they cheat and lie. If they want to impose upon a world that doesnt want their vision. It will have to be with the hammer and wrecking ball.

This space is for us center/right people who don't have a home anymore because of the breakdown of factual information in the new age of Republican politics.

HOLY SHIT! Tim with the Tom Brokaw name drop! That gave me such lovely nostalgic chills. What I wouldn’t do to feel that way about a newscaster again. One prime time person you can trust whole heartedly. Actually Tim is exactly that just not on a major network- and that’s a good thing. Also… I want to be Tim’s old lady neighbor. I felt almost jealous when he talked about her 😊 Come be my neighbor Tim! Thanks for the great show yall! Nothing I love more than listening to Tim and the Bulwark podcast and cooking for my boys. Have a great night yall!

I found the comment about paid versus paid content on various if not all podcasts. Everyone of them is asking $5 or more per month. I'm on a fixed income. As much as I would like to be able to pay for premium content, I just can't afford it. Making sure I am getting a variety of viewpoints is something that I strive to do. I just hope I'm getting enough accurate information by watching a variety of sites.

Midas Touch is great. Writers like Ron are great. They lean in on the legal. Alot of very talented lawyers like Karen Freidman Agnifilo, Ben Miselas and Michael Popok. I like Norm Eisen and Harry Litman too. Have got to have the facts.

Balanced radio newscast ca. 1943: "In other news, Adolf Hitler's spokesperson Joseph Goebbels has denied mass excecutions in special camps. (Turning to a popular radio reporter): And what is the Roosevelt administration's response?"

We may need a conservative party, but the current GOP cult of personality ain't it. I think Tim and Liz Cheney and George Conway should form an actual new Conservative party. In effect they've done that already; they should make it official. Call them Tories for short.

Yes, neither the Republicans nor the Democrats have all the right answers. Diversity is the best situation, but compromise is also necessary.

A lot of us older folk are more up to date than a lot of younger people! What I’ve noticed is how the news has become more about opinions rather than sticking to the facts. There’s a lot of hyperbole and propaganda. I want the facts so I can make up my own mind and have opinions of my own.

Thanks for the New Yorker link. I read the article and stayed to watch an adorable short video of a father explaining to his young daughter the many and varied uses for the F-word, followed by a fun video of Arab-American cousins meeting up. Expanded my horizon.

As a not dead yet living embodiment of the cable news medium age of 68 (I'm 67), when my 68-year-old girlfriend watches cable news programs I usually put on headphones and listen to music. I have yet to have a Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of the Moon experience while listening to Music while Nichole Wallace and her panel are on, but I know it will happen one day and, on that day, things will make sense and reality will become real again and my broken reel to reel will play music again.

How about all those Republican EX-Trump voters I see clips of online? Can their part be made more “mainstream?” Where did those people get their news? Can we put them on ads on Fox?

I would say unlimited options in media is a very good thing. Look at monopolies in agra, energy, tech, etc and the consumer is getting shafted in retail pricing because there's no competition. We dont need that in media, too.

Yup….the Republican Party has basically turned into a “dictatorship” or cult culture…where people don’t get rewarded based on merit, hard work, etc. but only by doing the dictator favors and staying in the dictator’s favor. And sp all the cronies will compete to be ever more outrageously loyal, more flattering, etc.

We completely understand, we just cannot allow. There are not enough of them to elect the 🍊🤡 if we organize and vote. It’s really that simple. The burden rests on us and nobody will save us from that responsibility. Not the Courts, the congress, or anyone else. It’s on us.
