I grew up in Lynchburg and would leave for military service, come back for a year, move to Norfolk, live and work there for 31 years, and move back to Lynchburg in January 2018 after retiring from working for Norfolk. I am well aware of the cons mentioned and one of them I like. Still there is much happening in Lynchburg and it excites me and that did play a role in moving back to Lynchburg.

There sure are hotels and a few motels. The "cheapness" may depend on when you are coming. When certain events are happening at the colleges around town, especially Liberty University (just due to it's size), the room availability can decrease...and rates increase.

I truly hate the way the state of VA an city council has ignored Lynchburg. Changing the name to something hip an powerful an thought provoking would boost up the city’s appeal. Getting younger ppl on city council who dont have a racist, religious or Lgqbt agenda would work….. Open books to follow the money the city spends no private sectors…. I honestly would like to know how tf did the LPD get approved for $50 MILLION to build a new headquarter when cop city in Atl cost $67 Million an its 50X bigger than the one in Lynchburg. Also the laws as far as building permits need to change, people say Lynchburg is not a major city true but its not a very small city contrary to popular belief you can really shake something out there with the proper infrastructure developed. Also contrary to popular belief that city has enough colleges to bring out a thriving community of youngsters. It can become a very walkable city with a few modifications. The police need to adopt a new policy when handling the citizens I get confused out there I looked at the crime stats an it doesn’t seem like the city is bad I go past the jail an say damn this is a big azzz jail for a area, I see the teens are on a curfew an see the police are very aggressive so Im confused is the place a mini gotham city 🏙️ or what. Im amazed no clubs no entertainment nothing cultural for the Blacks in the area who spurned so great icons from there; it seems to me someone has a vendetta against the area an wants to watch it die a slow miserable death then see it replaced so that makes me skeptical about city board members and council. Lynchburg could be a small business megaplex overnight but Im pretty sure the city would not include any prominent Blacks from the community into the mix an will probably find endless ways to harass the proprietor if they did. Their could be clubs on the white side of town an on the black side overnight but that fuq city will not make laws to allow them to thrive matter fact it seems the city would do everything in they power to see them get shutdown; evil weirdo shii. So what you have a fight a shootout etc its not the owner fault people dont know how to behave the owner didn’t raise them, if people still want to go to those establishments they have a right to choose if people complain I suggest build a designated area just for social events far disconnected from any whining azz semi retardarded neighbors complaining because their cats cant sleep. Lynchburg is a city on life support I met one of the realest person ever from there man I could go on an on on how the city could change for the better, but I am going to be brutally honest the yt bars an clubs would be cool but if yall focus on building the Black community an Black culture Lynchburg would take off like a rocket ship 🚀 an pull in so much revenue it would be insane.

Campbell county is lower. Lynchburg City real estate tax = $0.89 per $100 value. Campbell County = $0.45 per $100 value. Lynchburg City Property tax (like your car) = $3.80 per $100 value. Campbell County is $4.11 on the books…but they only use 50% of the value, so effectively it is $2.06
@Draknfyre3 ай бұрын
@@Living-In-Lynchburg-Virginia Ah, just PPT then and only "officially", makes more sense now. I've always heard people talk favorably about CC for taxes. Lynchburg just jacked our taxes up this year by majorly increasing our appraised values. Somehow my house suddenly became worth $30,000 more and they claimed it was due to the price of wood being more expensive due to supply chain shortages. But my "favorite" grift is the trash pickup fee. Instead of a $45 annual decal they claimed tacking on a $10/month charge on our water bill was "more convenient" than having to go purchase a decal. Yeah, more convenient for them to get 2.7X the original fee, and change it to mandatory. Previously if you didn't want city pickup you just didn't buy the decal. Now you are forced to pay the fee regardless. Take your trash yourself? Someone else picks it up for you? Doesn't matter, they demand that $10/month fee and will not remove it regardless of the situation.

I used to have a sales job that took me all around the state of Virginia which I think gave me a pretty good idea of the different cities and towns. After doing that for a couple years I actually made a list of the places I would consider living. Keep in mind this was about 15 years ago. Lynchburg was not one of my favorite cities in fact it didn't even crack the top ten if I remember right. I know things have improved with the growth of Liberty University so hopefully it would do better on some ones list today. Back then there was a lot of poverty and the job outlook for people was not good at all. Everything was looking run down and just felt depressing to me. I did like the Bedford area a little better but that was because of Smith Mountain Lake. Anyway sounds like things are looking up and I would bet property would be a little cheaper than say Charlottesville which isn't that far away. I also remember Danville was near the bottom of the list just above Newport News and Hampton.
@Living-In-Lynchburg-Virginia3 жыл бұрын
Mark P. …I think you’re spot on. I’ve lived here for three years. But visited fairly regularly within the past eight years or so. I absolutely think the area could be better on the poverty side. But I do think there has been growth and some revitalization efforts. And true…the Charlottesville area is more expensive to buy right now, in comparable areas. I’ve had some clients who are moving to Lynchburg for specific reasons; school or work. And some who just like the area. There are lots of different options relatively close, like SML…Bedford…Wintergreen…or the good old Hill City itself. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Lynchburg is a pretty fairly safe (compared to big city areas) town but it’s a type of place that one would move to if they’re looking for a cheaper, fairly safe area to raise their family. I wouldn’t recommend moving to Lynchburg if you’re young and up and coming because based on my experiences if you’re not the type of person who’s a part of the old money conservative crowd or in to drug abuse like I see a lot of (young) people into it’s hard trying to meet people and find things to do. In fact I tend to go out of town a lot, the last decade or so, because I literally got tired of going to work and coming home and repeating the cycle. The only reason I’m still here is because of immediate family but if it wasn’t for that I think I would eventually move out of town since funny enough I’ve made friends and have been more entertained out of town than here in Lynchburg.
@Living-In-Lynchburg-Virginia Жыл бұрын
You’re right! It’s not “big city” with as much to do, for sure. But I’m grateful it’s generally safe. I totally get your assessment. Makes sense. It seemed like a nice laid back town which I like. I am not really a city girl. Like I like something in the middle of country and city. I know I hated it at times but really looking back, it was fine. My dad and I would go through a slice of WV and into PA to get to family in SE PA :) Wanted to avoid DC :)

To anyone thinking of moving here. Rent first. Saying that Lynchburg and the surrounding areas, Bedford, Forest, etc are conservative is an UNDERSTATEMENT. If you have younger children realize there will not be much for them to do here outside the church. Just about every event here has something to do with the church, even our kids come home from school with church flyers. If your looking for diversity you will not find it here. There are a scant few Asian or Mexican markets. And if your looking for anything outside American food you have maybe 3 choices. Lynchburg is mainly made up of Caucasian Boomers. So diversity in religion, food, political views, culture, etc is not really a thing. There are an overwhelming amount of realtors and MLM Huns here. The hustle is very strong with both these crowds. Because the population here is a little older driving can be a little hectic at times. Leave early to get where your going. You will find that people going 20 in a 45 is normal. Or pulling out into oncoming traffic at 5mph is expected. Or going to the only ALDIs in town and finding someone has drove through the side of the building again is not as surprising as you think. The bus rout is pretty much non existent so seeing people driving when they are not supposed to be (per doctors orders) is very common. I’m saying all this because I don’t think the real cons were laid out in this video. Lynchburg is quiet and is beautiful, as far as being a great place to live… I guess that just depends on who you are.
@Living-In-Lynchburg-Virginia2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting Tamm! I agree with you on some of what of you said (like all the REALTORS...ughhh). 😉 And I have a different take on some of what you said. But that's life! And I appreciate your input. I think there are about 400 churches in Lynchburg. So there are a lot of "church" things going on. I wouldn't say it's quite fair to say there's not much outside of church for young kids to do. And Amen to the conservative thing... (uh...I mean "Yes"). I think you're right about that too. I do believe there are people with differing views around. But it's fair to say the area leans conservative, largely due to the influence of Liberty University. Much like it would be fair to say Charlottesville leans liberal, largely due to the influence of UVA. I've been on the road A LOT in my life. First as a Trooper and now as one of those many, many REALTORS. I don't find the older population of drivers to be as much as a problem as the younger, less experienced, and distracted drivers. I would say it's a little bit of a reach to say driving through the side wall of ALDIS is not suprising...or cars driving into oncoming traffic at 5 MPH is to be expected. The bus route thing could be an issue! I don't know a lot about the bus routes. But I'm also not privy to people's medical records. So, I wouldn't venture to say that people driving who have been ordered not to is very common. I appreciate your input Tamm! If you don't mind...give us your #1 non-American food restaurant. I'm curious to know if I've eaten there already. If not, I'll make a visit! Thanks. - JD

@TammTamz Lynchburg is a pretty fairly safe (compared to big city areas) town but it’s a type of place that one would move to if they’re looking for a cheaper, fairly safe area to raise their family.
@rwall3450 Жыл бұрын
@Robert Mcqueen Yeah man, the last 2 years or so especially, if I got the time, money and energy, 9 times out of 10 I’m either in Maryland or North Carolina. And if I have any extra time and cash I’m literally traveling across the U.S. like I started doing not too long ago just to see new things and meet new people. I tell you if I didn’t start taking the initiative to start doing the things I started doing I was bordering on the edge of insanity.

@barrykeyes26463 жыл бұрын
Well crafted for the most part, We don’t have a Costco we have Sam’s club. This is not a “Coastal” region so the beach reference has no relevance. If someone wants to relocate and would prefer “big city” living then it would probably make sense NOT to consider a small to medium alternative with the same expectations? And I’m pretty sure there is no misleading information directed to those who may be in question. We have one theater as mentioned numerous times but not long ago there were three, Carmike Movies-10 which cost 1 dollar for entry by the way, that being said we also had a few “Blockbuster” stores and everyone knows how they met their demise! A movie theater is pretty much useless if the majority chooses to sit home and stream etc. And thank God for not having an Interstate running through the immediate area as they are easily enough accessible within a half hour or less and we don’t get the “Negative” flow from them. Tax information given is accurate with one exception, you can actually reside in one of two “Counties” and still have a “Lynchburg” mailing address County taxes are generally more forgiving than City taxes without major sacrifice, for example city sewer/water as opposed to County water or Well and Residential Septic. I would almost mention that Waste removal could be noted but Lynchburg forces you to purchase “trash tags” and charges a fee for use of landfill in addition to the higher taxes. They take care of lawn debris as well in intervals / the counties allow you to remove your own household waste to different collection sites around or you have several private pickup options to. Just a thought!

Somehow I think I missed your comment here. You are exactly right. There are so many different perspectives...and some misinformation...and it can be difficult for someone to know what it's like and what to expect. The truth is, every single place...everywhere...has good things and bad things. Every single place...everywhere...has a troubled history of some sort. People are far from perfect. And when you get a bunch of people together in a town or city...you have a town or city with a bunch of imperfect people. So, everyone needs to do the best research they can and hopefully make a decision based on accurate information. No place - including the Hill City - will be right for everyone.
