Loved this one!!!! I’m currently mourning the loss of my cat, Mr. Magoo. He was hospice with cancer for 5 years. They told me 5 years ago to put him down and I refused. He’s ruled our home with an iron fist all this time and only got really sick the day before he passed away. My heart aches but it would have been much more vacant without his love these past 5 years. I have other cats but he was my soul mate and I was his person. And I have his ashes I couldn’t never bare to pour them on the ground. I have given instructions that when I die, all the cats and dogs I’ve rescued and creamated go in my coffin with me. Thanks Lamont!

Sometimes the markers are buried in the ground. A historic graveyard had seismic done to locate burial placement. An unexpected discovery is that markers were found. Once those upright markers fall over, they are covered over by earth, mud, leaves, etc., quickly.

It took me a full year to track down my great grandfather’s grave. That’s because a volunteer made a typo when transcribing his name from original hand-written records to a computer document. But I did find him and I applied to the government for a no-charge military tombstone, free to all veterans, including Confederates. He is now buried in the honored Confederate section of the big cemetery in Columbia, S. C.

I am a black historian with a focus on the USCT (United States Colored Troops) of the Civil War. Most of the black soldiers buried there are from two USCT brigades. Brigadier General Edward Hinks led one of the three divisions of infantry in Smith’s corps which was composed of two brigades of United States Colored Troops (or USCT) led by Colonel John Holman and Colonel Samuel Duncan. Holman’s brigade consisted of two infantry regiments the 1st USCT and the 10th USCT. The 5th Massachusetts Cavalry (this was a unit of black troops) was also attached to his brigade but were ill-prepared for battle. Duncan’s brigade was composed of the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 22nd USCT regiments. There were about 3,500 men in Hinks’ division, some of those troops were born into slavery and others had not been.

I love old cemeteries or forgotten ones that people stumble upon while hiking or what have you. My uncle lived in a house that if you went further back in the woods behind it there was a very old abandoned graveyard. Not many headstones so we thought maybe it was a family spot. Couldn't read any of the stones so no idea. Been a long time since I was there and not even sure they exist anymore, which is a shame if they built over it.
@kimgrattage23952 жыл бұрын
If they are still there do some paper rubbings with pencils slanted to one side, be surprised what will show up. We were taught to do them at primary school in the UK. I found charcoal very good when used lightly. Give it a go if still there and isolated, some people can be funny about you doing gravestone rubbings. Our head teacher and teacher had to obtain permission from the head of the church before we could do it..

The first gravesite is known as a false crypt or box tomb. The enclosed section seen does not contain the body. The body is buried in a coffin underneath the ground. The portion seen is placed over the in-ground burial. This type of burial was popular among the upper social class in the early 19th century. The information of who was buried there is found on the flush side if it were to exist. The interesting things one can learn from visiting cemeteries or graveyards. 🤔. Thank you, Lamont, as you always produce interesting, informative, and intriguing videos!

This is way cool! I just paid a visit here on the afternoon of Oct 22nd and the morning of Oct 23rd - had hopped off the Blue Ridge Parkway and making my way towards Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore (native NYer). A couple of times I thought of you and a couple other graveyard KZbinrs, wondering if the Old City Cemetery had gotten its due, but too enthralled to kill that afternoon buried in search bars. For anyone wondering, the rows of folding chairs you see throughout the video were set up as part of the graveyard candlelight tours. They were completely sold out through Halloween Sunday. The afternoon I went I also noticed a small wedding party taking outside pictures - the bridesmaid was also riding the oak tree swing. I got the impression that weddings occurred there often, as the overall mood seemed quite celebratory, of life, of the passing of generations, how stories could still be gleaned from the most worn down headstone. Great job!
