Free parking, more car parks or ban motorists from the city centre? What is the solution to Dublin's growing traffic problem?
Dublin City centre faces the challenge of a growing number of cars on the road and the growing need for places to park.
Today, the inner city needs thirty six thousand spaces to park its cars. By 1985, it will need sixty thousand.
Dr Wilbur F Smith, an American traffic expert, believes that there is a lack of regulation of parking on Dublin streets.
Raymond O'Donoghue, Area Secretary for Ireland of the Automobile Association (AA), recently wrote about the problems of congestion and parking in the magazine 'Drive'. He is critical of a Dublin Corporation plan to introduce meters on the principle of making a person pay for a system of restricting parking. He believes a free parking scheme should have been tried like the Paris disc system and advocates for an increase in off-street parking in the city.
Our street system was never designed to carry its present traffic volume.
Minister for Transport Mr Kevin Boland believes that there is no magic answer to the traffic problem in Dublin. The minister believes says that the only way to reduce city centre traffic is to discourage motorists from driving into Dublin.
Raymond O'Donoghue warns against restricting or banning traffic from the city centre. He believes that the solution is to build appropriate off-street parking to accommodate the cars.

Too Many Cars in Dublin City? Ireland 1969 1837PM 1.10.24 where i grew up the housing estate streets had about 5 garages to house cars. the streets weren't made for cars up there... this is evinced when i have a wander back and see masses of cars clogging up once free and easy byways... the streets used to be full of kids now they're full of cars... is that a reference to life choices wherein a man and his wife would rather own two cars and two home than spawn a bunch of progs?

The population of the Greater Dublin Area is 2.1 million, or approximately 40.5% of the total population of Ireland and estimates published by the Central Statistics Office suggest that the population will reach 2.4 million by 2026.

Greater dublin area is very overblown, it includes the entire counties of meath, kildare, wicklow and dublin, clearly not all Dublin, real dublin population is more like 1.2 million and belfast is more like 350,000

@@horatiotodd8723 not really, it’s surrounded by rural communities, and the Belfast Metropolitan Area includes two counties, counties are an English invention, however the video itself talks about the problems of planning. So yes at the broader end of definitions, the Dublin Transport Authority Act 2008 defines the Greater Dublin Area as including the counties of Dublin (Dublin City, South Dublin, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown and Fingal), Meath, Kildare, and Wicklow. And the 2003 Regional Planning Guidelines referred to the Greater Dublin Area as a planning district separated into a "metropolitan area" and a "hinterland area".

Ireland 1969 1827pm 1.10.24 even then - too many cars....? jeeeez.... i just had to confess i dont own a car nor can i drive. the contemporary sin. ahahahahaha.... jeeez.....................................................................i should feel ashamed for that, then, not owning a car nor being able to drive? granted, more freedom. but one cannot afford to run one let alone own one. unless it was camper van situation wherein i had a rock band kindda set up... which would cost the earth to run....one of those massive lemmy type efforts............................................................................ get out there and thumb a lift from a horse an' trap.
