I just bought Faber-Castell Pitt Graphite Matt pencils a few months ago, and I am finding them very useful. I haven't stopped using my regular pencils, but I do like the very dark pencils for the dark areas. Very nice effect. I tried another brand, but they felt too charcoaly.

For dark backgrounds I normally apply graphite powder 9B with cotton wool, and when enough applied add white spirit to cotton and rub over the graphite agar. It does reduce the shine considerably and also gives a much darker finish. Careful though after applying the spirt you cannot erase.

I've found that the Mars Lumograph black pencils are blacker than graphite, but lighter than full carbon. The shine one gets with graphite pencils is due to the fact that graphite molecules are shaped like flat plates. Drawing with graphite, especially going over the same spot multiple times, will press them all flat on the surface, like cards laid out on a table. And, so, they will reflect light.

I bought the small set some time ago. Curious thing is the tin says it comes with 8b 6b 2x4b and 2x2b. But it came with hb 2b 4b 6b 7b and 8b. I like them but they have a weird waxy feeling and they don't erase well so I don't find them ideal fro drawing , but for shading they are great. Edit: Oh I see you commented the same things I think of them haha

I love how clear your teaching is! Would you please help us understand how to choose leaf values…if darkness protrudes then why would one Paint the half of the leaf on the far side darker. And painting the veins dark makes the leaf look indented. I feel all over the place, I need a system. Are the leaves closest to the viewer darkest in value and the ones hidden behind paler in value. I am talking plants and botanical illustration, not tree leaves. Please help! Again I love all the single purchase classes I bought on your website, I wish you had one for botanical illustration! We need your concise step by step teaching abilities, also botanical composition!

I enjoy my Lumigraph pencils very much but have learned to protect my whites, kinda reminds me of doing a watercolor. I have used the HB for watercolor sketches done very lightly and I was able to lift some of the darker areas with a kneaded eraser on hp 100% cotton. Using them in drawings with blending does recreate the shine again, sometimes I use a cotton bud swab to blend also. I enjoy my charcoal tinted and Contes the most for sketches honestly but it’s all good.

I took delivery of the full set of Faber-Castell Pitt Graphite Matt pencils the day before your first Getting sketchy with the Staedtler black pencils. Strangely enough with the same order I got a pad of A3 Strathmore Toned Gray paper. Where the order went wrong was the white charcoal blocks rather than pencils. More to the point I would love to know how the Faber-Castells compare to the Staedtler. Like you I'm a keen advocate of the Derwent Graphic pencils and have gone through several sets and, yes, I have experienced issues with graphite shine. The Faber-Castell set comprises HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B 10B, 12B, and 14B pencils along with blending stump, sharpener, and PVC-free eraser.

Faber-Castell came out with Pitt Matte Graphite pencils. Has anyone tried them; and because they seem to contain some carbon/charcoal, can they still be considered graphite pencils? Also, I read somewhere that Faber Castell claim their Pitt Graphite Matte Pencils are a World first; since some charcoal pencil brands are hybrid graphite/carbon/charcoal, could the Pitt Matte be only graphite?

Faber Castell Pitt Matt graphite, are way better, As for classic graphite pencils, nothing beats the Faber Castell Aquarelle, most versatile and highest performance graphite pencil out there, that quality can't even come close, even from Staedtler. PS Derwent graphite pencils are a joke compared to Faber Castell, only some of their color pencil lines are ok, still not as great as Polychromos, Abercht Durer etc..

I'm not a fan of the Mars Lumograph pencils. First, they don't do away with shine. It isn't as blatant with these pencils, but it's still there. Second, the upper B pencils are largely wax. They're really just a colored pencil that uses graphite as the pigment. This is fine, but I really don't like the way they feel. Third, I don't agree at all that we can't get true black with graphite. The price we pay is shine, but shine only shows up when the drawing is viewed at a reflective angle. This hasn't been a problem for centuries, and complaints about it are a KZbin special. Lastly, charcoal, carbon, and colored pencils all work better at give a deep black without shine. I've also been experimenting with a black pastel pencil, and I'm liking the way it's working. Deep black, zero shine, and easy cleanup should it be needed. We each have our personal preferences. The Mars Lumograph pencils simply are not one of mine. I'll use the ones I have up to 6B, but not the ones above that.

How about you take a break and stop making these WRONG ADVICE videos. You're being reported to the authorities for misleading the public. We're NOT reinventing pencils just because you say so. Graphite mixed with wax and preserving materials is perfectly fine, so its YOU THAT HAS THE PROBLEMS. You stop telling the world your problems, and go tell your doctor about your graphite problems.
