My goal was to blend cheap bourbons to make them taste better. Blending good bourbons - if it's good, I drink it neat. Combining good bourbons SHOULD make a good bourbon. the trick it blending inexpensive whiskey and making something better So I got Benchmark Full proof and liked the flavor but didn't like the bite, so I tried this. 1 part BM FG (125 proof) 1 part Bernheim wheat (I never drink it because it has so little flavor) (90) 1 part Fighting Cock (103) which i love the sweetness Result, I really liked it (overall 106 proof) Did NOT like Benchmark FP + 1792 + Mellow Corn

I have been blend in for years. I call Larceny a universal blender. I have used it in several blends, often just a small amount makes a big impact on the flavor. One of my favorites is WT 101 & Larcency ( 4 parts WT to 1 part Larceny). It's suirprisingly good, brings out flavors not noticed in each separately. Even small amounts of a stronger flavor and proof of bourbon added to a so-so bourbon can positively improve the taste.

OF 1915 blend. Just bought some 1910. I already had the 1920. I like the 1910 and 1920. The 1910 seems a little light to me for 93 proof. The 1920 has a slight medicinal taste. @richardhooper50132 жыл бұрын
I stumbled upon this blend last year while finishing off three bottles that each had about a finger left in them. I have since replicated this several times and wow! So equal parts Larceny, WT101 and Very Old Barton 100 proof. Let this "marry" (Dewar's term) together in the bottle for about a month, each week I give the bottle a good swirl and leave the top off for about 10 minutes, do this every week for four weeks and then it should be fairly well married together. And it gets better over time. To me the nose is very rich stewed red fruits with baking spices, cinnamon, little clove, the barrel char is a good way. Its sweeter than I expected, smells amazing and is infinitely crushable. I really like each of those bottles on their own, but together they are amazing (I think)! Where I live I get get all three bottles (750's) for $60-65 and would pay more than that for the resulting bottle.

I, too, have always been curious about the art of blending. Probably why I have enjoyed so much of the High West lineups over the years. I've never gone so far as just blending pours, but I do tend to put together 1:1 blends when I make Manhattans or Old Fashioneds. I don't keep many sub-90 Proof bottles around, but I do like to keep a Four Roses Yellow around to blend with the Four Roses Single Barrel (particularly the specialty barrel picks I have accumulated over the years which tend to be hotter than the standard SB) so that I get the proof in my cocktail while not overusing the SB bottle. I guess I need to open a few bottles and have some fun.

Hey Kurt, one that you didn't mention...and since you don't mind using harder to get stuff...is "Stagle" which is 50/50 Stagg Jr. & Eagle Rare. It's pretty special, I think you should treat yourself and Trenton to a taste. I let mine sit about an hour, and I'm hoping it stays the same when it sits long term. But it tastes like a BP Eagle Rare (110 pf), or E.H. Taylor Single Barrel or Barrel Proof (as opposed to a watered down Stagg Jr.). Fantastic nose, and deep, rich, strong flavors. I definitely like it better than Stagg Jr. (you've got to be in the mood to be treated rough and raw by a 130+ pf bourbon that's turned up to 11) and it's got way more balls than Eagle Rare but still has its refinement. It makes sense these would work well together since they're all Buffalo Trace low rye Mashbill #1. BTW, I'm doing it with Batch 16. Would 60/40 or 75/25 better? Who knows, but I'll enjoy finding out.

I maintain an infinity decanter, exclusively bourbon, that I keep well-documented as far as what goes in there, how much, what proof, and the mashbill. Whenever I open a new bottle that I really like, I'll contribute 2 oz to the infinity decanter. Once the decanter gets full I'll drink it down until there are 2 oz left in there and go back to contributing to it from new bottles that I open. I never let it run empty, thus the infinity aspect of it. At present, I'm one new bottle away from it being full so it'll be there by the end of this week. I'd love to send you guys a couple samples if you're interested.

I have done the traditional poor mans 60-40 pappy. I also did full proof in place of 12. I recently did a 60-20-20. 107-12-full proof. My friends thought the most recent was best

Just made/discovered a great, IMO, old fashioned blend. 1:1:1 knob creek 9 yr 100 proof : Rittenhouse rye BiB : Evan Williams 1783 small batch easy on the wallet, stands up decent. thanks for the great content.

Great show. I think I would love the blend of the Larceny and the Maker's cask strenth...Gotta try that....I am also a huge fan of WT products. Gotta try the Old Bird

Very interesting. I'm going to try Prudent Pappy and Old Bird Bourbon. I have those, all the others never can find in my area. Also I do like the Old Elk 4 Grain.

The OE 4 grain is very good! Thankfully I was able to find it.

I made the Texas version of OF 1915 out of equal parts Garrison Brothers Balmorhea and Guadalupe. Really good stuff.

I saw Old Grand-Dad 114 on the shelves here in NC for the first time last week. I should have... maybe it'll be there when I go back.

Haha... I'm drooling over the Highland Park blend but laughing at the face T is making when he smells it.

Very cool, I think it will be difficult for me to want to experiment w/any of my more expensive bottles....because how many times are you just going to 'muck up' a perfectly good bourbon ? I, also, am not a coffee drinker and I don't typically reach for a Scotch I am more a Rye guy.

What a fun and informative show! I never blended anything, but heard of Poor Man's Pappy". I was literally laughing along with you guys - great way to start the week. Could you post the different blends, so we can come back and try these at some point? Thanks again!

Having a very small bar I combined the last ounce of George Dickel 12 with maybe two ounces left of Clyde Mays straight bourbon. Loved it.

Kevin was nice to list all the blends in a comment. That comment is now pinned so just go back to the comments and it will be right on top 1st in line!

Because I like my bourbon about 100 proof I use Makers Cast and Larceny 50/50 with a charred spiral. Let sit in dark cabinet at least 2 weeks

Ok, here's kind of a weird blend I literally just made by accident that turned out pretty good (and I realize the measurements aren't great): mostly Knob creek 12 year (maybe 1 oz), a splash of Wild turkey Rare Breed, and a Splash of Old Forester 1910 (maybe 1/2 oz each, slightly heavier on the 1910). I did this because I'm not a fan of the Knob Creek 12 year - too strong of a tobacco/leather note for me with honestly not a whole lot else going on in my opinion. The splashes of the Rare breed and 1910 add a little more complexity and dont increase the alcohol strength too much while also making the palette more bearable and the nose WAY better (for me). Mostly obtainable as well where I am (MA). Would be super interested to see what you guys think!

Actually I just wanted to do a quick update because I've had a minute with this blend now: I'm getting some cherry, which I didn't get on the Knob Creek by itself, I get more vanilla (from the 1910 I think) - but here's a new note I dont think I've ever gotten, and call me crazy (because it sounds wild), but I'm getting something adjacent to cotton candy on the nose from this which is blowing my mind. Maybe that's normal? I guess it might be caramel? Idk I personally haven't seen (smelled?) that note before. Cheers!

Actually cotton candy is a tasting note I have heard in the past so kudos! You are using all excellent whiskeys in your blend so should be great!

Curt, what are your thoughts on Westland American Single Malt? I ask because, to me, and some others, it has a good amount of coffee notes. I think it’s fantastic, but I’m also a coffee lover.
@slbdrinks2 жыл бұрын
Finally collected enough American single malts to do a video. I can’t wait honestly. I know I have a Westland but not quite sure which one(s). I will be digging into these soon!
