I work at total wine and I’ve had special reserve all the time actually. On our last truck we received a shipment with 2 of the 107 bottles not a case... 2, 750ml bottles! I haven’t seen a 12 in lord knows how long. Seems like with the exception of benchmark and ancient age...anything by buffalo trace just flies off the shelf!

Nice work Sara and Chad! I will definitely try this blend if I ever get my hands on the 12yr Weller. Something to consider regarding the taste test is that BT has only been making the mash for Pappy since 2002. The two Weller bourbons are young enough to be distilled and aged at BT but we have another year to get the Pappy 15 to come from the same source. Keep up the good work and Cheers!

Bartender friend at private golf course gifted the last couple ounces of Pappy 15 to me. It is incredibly smooth, well balanced and unique... but just didn't have that WOW factor for me. At least I have the bottle and it's in perfect condition with cork! You'd be surprised what these can sell for empty! Cheers!!!

Cooking a batch of this as I speak. Using A Rock Hill Farms bottle as I cannot throw it out. That said, I have done this blend before and my comparison is to ORVW 10 107 (PVW 15 is impossible). Anyway I like the blend better quite a bit but IMHO the ORVW 10 107 is in a different league. Never had the 15 but I find it hard to believe the blend is better. Really enjoy your videos

Buffalo Trace seems to be very good at hyping their products. Not that long ago, when I first got into whiskey - maybe 2015ish? - the local liquor store chain near my home in Florida, sold Weller 12 for $24.99, Weller Antique 107 for $19.99 and Weller Special Reserve for $13.99. You could have bought all you wanted. I tried them all and didn't care for any of them. I even tried making "poor mans Pappy" and didn't care for it. So thankfully I never spent a bunch of money on a bottle of Pappy, because I think I would be very disappointed. But its still fun to try different whiskeys.

Now all the Weller 12yo and Antique 107 are out of stock for the Poor Man's Pappy crowd too. It's a shame. I was getting Stagg for around the same prices every year until word got out.

Thank you for this video. It goes to show NOT that Pappy is bad, but that there is so much out there (for so much less) that is GOOD. Drink what you like, how you like. Taste is subjective. You may not get to try Pappy or some other $5,000 bottles, but if you keep an open mind, you will have some excellent spirits. I think there's a reason Bourbon in particular is exploding how it is, but that's a different thread. I hope to try Pappy one day, but if not, I won't be upset. There's lots out there. Like the bottle of Jefferson's Ocean, Voyage 15 I have to work the guts up to open. Never had a wheated bourbon, and never spent $80 on a bottle of anything. Here's to you, your health and your channel. :-)

My and some friends did the same thing about a year ago. We had a pappy 10 and a pappy 15 and we mixed weller 12 and 107 in a 50/50 mix. Everyone preferred the weller. lol, including some serious bourbon drinkers. Pappy is way overpriced and not worth what it is going for. Pappy 10 is not worth $90. Pappy 15 is not worth $150 or more. And no real bourbon drinker would think that it is.

@peterbilelis17948 жыл бұрын
Guys, Old Weller Antique and Weller 12 are not poor man's Pappy 15. The urban legend is that they make a poor man's Old Rip Van Winkle 10. A blend of a 6+ year old and 12 year old bourbon do not make a 15. And, while I love Weller 12, no serious bourbon person could ever mistake the mouth feel of even straight Weller 12, or a mix of it with lesser OWA, for the real Pappy 15. But, if you prefer the flavor and mouth feel of this blend, who cares - enjoy it!
@ItsBourbonNight8 жыл бұрын
Peter Bilelis Yes, agreed on your points. When we did the video we had access to our sample of the Pappy 15 so we thought we would compare it to the highest age of Pappy we could. Needless to say, we were both surprised and impressed that we both preferred the mixture. But yeah, as you said, more power to what you like! Thanks for the comment.
@tommyg50957 жыл бұрын
Peter Bilelis Regardless. It is your palette. What you like may not be what another person likes. All of the points are subjective, and can change day to day,,, mood to mood,,, season to season. And to say that one is better because you say so, negates the fact that someone else's opinion may be different,,, So, there is no right or wrong in this arena. Only what the person experiences at that moment,,,, I say, be creative. Experiment, and blend to your hearts content to find what you will enjoy, and share, but don't expect to impress everyone all of the time..A drink by any other name is still a drink...

Great taste test and video; thanks guys. The only criticism I have is that you tasted 107 proof versus 100 proof. Naturally the 107 is going to taste "hotter." I wish you had cut the 107 to 100 with spring water. It's not a difficult calculation. I also have this observation: Most things are subject to the law of diminishing returns. For example a $200 bottle of wine is almost never twice as good as a $100 bottle of the same varietal. So in a blind tasting, Pappy might taste better but probably not the multiple better as its price over say, a $50 bottle of another brand. So I don't get the whole super deluxe bourbon thing (or most anything for that matter). Find a bourbon you like up to the price point where the qualty/price benefit starts to diminish markedly. I suspect that's around $30 to $50. Finally, I think this taste test confirms what I'm saying. If I can get my hands on the two bourbons, I'd like to make my own Poor Man's Pappy.

The Truth is pappy is highly overhyped and overated. No whiskey is truly worth more than a couple hundred dollars. Even than it's not like you drink it and it is just so much better than everything else. Once you get good whiskey that's exactly what u have. Its not like it just keeps getting better and better with price. It might make you enjoy it more because you're drinking a rare exspinsive drink. But it only gets so good but gets as exspinsive as people are willing to pay
