I've come across your lessons only a few months ago, and I thoroughly enjoy them. I've spent my entire university career as a teacher of Arabic as a foreign language (now retired), but I still learn things from you. It happens that I found your broadcast when researching online venues for teaching Qur'an to believers who do not know Arabic. Most of them were exceedingly dull talking heads with physical blackboards. Yours are exactly the type of thing that I had envisioned myself doing as a retirement project. But now, it seems that I don't have to, because you have already done it superbly well. Allah will certainly reward you for your great service to our brothers and sisters, the majority of Muslims who did not grow up with Arabic. As to unfortunate Christianized expressions that we might use but shouldn't, I just heard myself saying "Oh man!" (when witnessing scenes of the ongoing genocide in Gaza). But I caught myself, because of your advice. This expression began as a reference to the myth of the risen Christ, deriving from the expression 'Man alive". It's kind of a muted blasphemy like 'darn' and 'gosh' and 'jeez,' as you point out. So, we shouldn't be saying "Oh man," either. Or for that matter "Man alive" (which I think is a bit old fashioned nowadays). جزاك الله خيرا

You really feel like you're doing something wrong when you say "oh man"?
@davidw3567
@davidw3567 Жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert in this by any means, but in my opinion, saying "man" by itself, say, when addressing someone (and it doesn't matter if it is actually a man), is probably ok, because it is used in reference to the person addressed, not a reference to the myth of the risen Christ. That is, you are not invoking or swearing by the Christ by saying it. @SisterinIslam87
@davidw3567
@davidw3567 Жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say it is wrong as such, only best for Muslims to avoid using it when there are better options. I'd never thought of it until I heard this lesson. But I have known for a long time - I think since my twenties or before - that the reference is to the myth of the man Jesus who was said to have arisen from the dead. Since writing the response to the lesson, I've heard myself saying it several times. But I'm also consciously saying "Ya Allah" instead, in the hope of breaking the habit, with the help of Allah. @@jevinday

Just to share a bit of help for people who will make the effort to stop using bad words Please dont beat yourself up when you use these terms 2. Dont try to suppress it ... This is similar to creating a dam that is simply holding thw water back What you must do is, whenever you catch yourself saying any of the wrong terms... Immediately follow it up with the proper thing to say as recommended in the video You must begin to do this every time That way, youre not suppressing anything. Theres no built up force Rather, youre making your brain associate the correct terms with the same instances in which you use the wrong terms Before you know it, you would see that whenever one of the trigger events happen, you would literally have both the good and the bad terms on your tongue, That means, the urge for one wouldn't be stronger than the other From then on you can start choosing to say the good word until it becomes stronger than the bad Allah know best If you find this helps, like (👍) the comment so that more brothers and sisters can see it as they watch this helpful video

Thank you so much for warning me and telling me, i didnt know that, but what should i do now? How do i make it up?😟 And also, some non muslim ppl make fun of me and start arguements when i make a halal / muslim joke, but all the time they use these haram words.

U didn't know. U are not held accountable for what u didn't know. May Allah make u strong in Islam, cuz you are young, yet u are worried about yourself. And be proud you are using "halal jokes". I grew up being a "muslim" guy in the school, even though around me were also "muslims" but not the practicing ones.. I was always a strange guy cuz of how I acted, but at the end, today, many of these guys respect me and some even thank me cuz now some of them started praying cuz of me - as they say.. Stay strong, be proud, let them laugh. People around our Prophet used to laugh at him, didn't they? But he knew what they didn't. Just as u now know what others don't. Be lenient to them, look at them as your sister/brother that u never wish to see in Jahannam. Try to explain it to them, but never be harsh, selfish or arrogant, cuz one day, they might become better than you.

Salaam alaikom young sister. Glad to read your comment... you can read many dua to male you stronger... if you know some of the quran... every day when you wake up read surah ikhlas 3x. Surah falaq 3x and surah naas 3x... you will be protected the whole day from all evil... So.glad you are makimg halal jokes...dirty dumb jokes are easy... making fun of others etc...but it takes character and intelligence to make halal jokes... our beloved prophet used to make jokes sometimes. But he allways spoke the truth even when joking. Maybe you can make dua that you find some muslims friends also. Inshallah... Allah is allways with you and you can ask him for help allways... i hope you will.learn alot in school and one day you will invite your friends to islam... best of luck little sister....greetings.from Netherlands

For us new reverts and no Arabic speakers, a lot of the alternate words used, have no meaning to us. Can you make a video explaining the translations to some of these words so we know what we are saying and have a better understanding of how to use those words. Thanks!

سبحان الله = subhan allah = Glory be to Allah You say it when you see something beautiful that god created or u can use it when u r surprises of something weird like ( Subhan allah how can people be that stupid ) -- > i mostly use it in that case 😂 ماشاء الله = Mashallah = God willing You can use it when you are impressed by someone's beauty or when u see a little cute baby or anything that's beautiful in general. Like ( Mashallah you have beautiful eyes) or ( Mashallah you're baby is so cute ) or ( Mashallah you have a nice house ) تبارك الله. = tabaraka allah = blessed be god Same as Mashallah and u can use them both in one sentence like ( Mashallah , tabaraka allah how beautiful! ) الله أكبر = Allah akbar = Allah is the greatest Can be used in both positive and negative situations, we say it when someone accepts islam for example ( Allah the greatest guided this man or woman to islam ) We use it when a disaster happens like when someone dies or an earthquake hits or something falls . It's like no matter what... Allah akbar , Allah is the greatest and is the only one that matters and he can do anything.

For "Jesus Christ", I'd also argue it's just insulting in general. We wouldn't say the name of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) like this and you could use the name of someone you know in an insulting way, so why use the name of one of our prophets insultingly? To be fair, 'Christ' on it's own isn't inherently against Islamic teachings if you look at the real meaning, but it's definitely something mostly used by Christians, so Muslims should probably avoid calling him "Christ" even neutrally. I'd also mention other phrases that are sadly common and involve swear words, such as "oh my f-ing god", "for God's sake", "Jesus f-ing Christ" (even quoting these makes me feel bad honestly). I'll admit that, as a white British revert to Islam, I do something use these (minus the swearing mostly, I've gotten a lot better at not swearing), but I'll try harder not to. I've been doing it often recently, so maybe Allah directly lead me to this video, as it appeared in my recommendations, especially as I think just today I was about to use the term 'godlike' when describing a superhero I made up to my friend, but then I quickly decided it probably wasn't a good idea. Anyway, barakallah fik! May Allah (azzawajal) reward you for these informative videos, they've been especially helpful for me as a revert! Jazakallah khair!

Whenever I said these words it never sit right within me, I was using them because of the memes and norms around us, around internet. "Wtf", "Wth", "Omg" are the words I usually use. Today I just reminded that "damn" means "laknat" which is a VERY scary and strong word. I never thought holy cow, holy shit, holy crap and so on are considered "not good" but in my believe I think it's not as bad, but if feels questionable a.k.a waswas to us, it's better just to avoid, because what does it even mean really 😅 Whenever we saying these words you will remind yourself not do it again, and again, and until long enough, Insyallah we'll stop using these words.

There are some cases that you feel obligated to say some of these words. For example, if some of my non-Muslim friends say that a person close to them died, I am supposed to say something like RIP or that friend could perceive me as heartless or carless. I guess I will look up what those alternatives should be.
