The washer system is crazy innovative. It allows for easier maintenance. Also, I have one (the carbon fiber one) and it came really sharp. I’ve had a few dull benchmade come to me over the years, no big deal. All people can do anymore is complain I swear. It’s a solid knife. Thanks for highlighting it. Next, you should try out the slimsada!

I agree it's a nice blade.... But I think most people look at it from the perspective of how much cost...to how much you get.... $200-250 is a bit steep. I love all the Gerber's I've owned....but that said....to compete you have to beat the absolute quality of knives you can get for the 100-150 range.

I own one of these - the blue aluminum model. I don’t want to say it was an impulse buy because I don’t make $200 impulse buys, but my birthday was coming up, and I wanted something different. I figured if it sucked, I’d return it. I did have the same issue with blade sharpness - it was okay sharp but hearing that these knives were hand-sharpened before leaving the factory, I expected better. I was able to put a nice edge on it, but it took work. As a lefty, I had to reverse the clip and the thumb stud and that was no problem, and I didn’t mar the blade. I do agree the knife should just come with a thumb stud on each side. The fit and finish of the knife are excellent as are the ergonomics. I planned to return the knife, and almost did because the lock was horrible. It had a metal-on-metal sound to it, and took force to use, even after loosening the pivot and adding KPL. The day I was going to mail it back, I toyed with the knife a little more, added some more oil, and somehow fixed whatever the issue was. The lock now works great, I didn’t return it, and it’s now one of the favorites in my EDC rotation. So, great knife at the end, but no way the knife should have been shipped with the lock as it was.

It looks like a great knife but I don't think they've paid their dues after quality the quality issues that they've had in the past. The fastball was an awesome knife but was a dumpster fire as far as QC was concerned. There's no way that anecdotal evidence between four or five people on KZbin would all find serious issues with their fastball unless there were large runs of knives not meeting QC. I know that Gerber can make an awesome knife, but with me personally they have to work their way back to having my trust by putting out great knives of a great quality with great value. As much as I love these new designs that they're putting out I just don't trust Gerber enough to buy a $200 knife from them. At the moment I own four or five Gerber knives with three of them having had QC issues ranging from a bit superficial to "seriously should not have left the factory"

G'day Aaron, yep a very nice look'n and functional design IMO. A small thing, but great to see a filler plate and even better with a practical use, i.e. jimping; that's good think'n I reckon. I also dig the single thumb stud; like the clip, you've only gotta set it once for RH or LH, even if.............it changes hands. With the factory edge; I dont mind a shallow angle out of the box, (as long as it is sharp enough to use right away). It gives the owner plenty of metal to grind/sharpen to their own preference, both from an angle and edge profile perspective. Btw; personally I use the Worksharp manual bench and field sharpener models, but surely a wheel will give you a concave edge at a micro level and I expect slightly convex with a belt system, have you noticed any perceivable difference using the Worksharp powered belt job, or simply just a time saver ? Cheers Duke.
@gideonstactical
@gideonstactical 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Duke, good to hear from you. Yeah usually prefer to do manual sharpening of my blades, it’s only when there’s a bad angle and I need to re-profile significantly or with my larger heavier thicker tools like BK2, or an ax or hatchet that I usually use the powered sharpener. It works well and it’s easy to get a convex ‘s edge on it, but I still haven’t quite got down the trick to not have a slightly rounded tip with the power sharpeners. Need to work with them some more to hone that skill.
@eyeofthetiger4184
@eyeofthetiger4184 2 жыл бұрын
@@gideonstactical Thanks for the reply Aaron, yep with ya, If they are big and/or that bad I do use a home linisher, perhaps a file, to get them close and symmetrical, then revert back to flat diamonds for that proper fine edge, without simply forming a parabolic dish shape. I'm sure it can be done totally powered with practice and getting through and down to the real fine belts, You're not alone mate, we both need to "hone" that skill, : ) not as meditative, but indeed more timely.

i got an exclusive model, black with dark grey almost black blade, 20cv and aluminum. not much info on it so i cant even remember who it was an exclusive for, but it was on sale for $99. people were speculating it may have a less than ideal heat treat, not sure. for $99 im definitely happy, but for $200 i wish it had a deeper clip and the blade wasnt so thick behind the edge. also dont understand why they didnt just put thumb stud on both sides, i like to fidget them with both hands. havent even carried it, my bugout(cerakote fde with alumium/micarta scales) and lionsteel skinny get most pocket time these days

All this vid tells me is that Gerber's quality control is lagging well behind the broader market. A 20CV blade that can't cut out (ie. blunt) of the box - quality control fail. No offence, but the purpose of a knife is to cut. The material upgrades are a very welcome change. IMHO the design's a little plain but no real issues. Single sided thumb studs suck as I sometimes open my knives with my off hand. Sorry Gerber I'll continue to sit and wait for you catch up with the broader market.

Though some of these Gerber knives do look good, with all the low standards they have had for the last couple of decades, I don’t believe they have earned the right to run with the proven big boys. Gerber most definitely does not have a future in my pocket. No disrespect to you Mr. Gideon, just my personal opinion.

They are nice but for $250? I don't know. The knife itself would just have to speak to me before I would drop that for any knife. The fact they are less sharp than the competitors that go for the same price? Yeah I'll pass.

It’s same price as the Benchmade Osborne s30v??? Outside of the dull edge the fit and finish is on par. Carbon fiber is the kind of pricey one, but the aluminum handles $200 I think are definitely in the same realm as Blades like the Osborne.

I wouldn't buy low performance 20cv/m390. I highly doubt they do the heat treatment correctly. So no thanks. They need to use the correct steel and heat treat and not just put popular steel on it to fill a bill of materials to sell knives based on popular materials. Most manufacturers run 20cv between 58 and 60hrc with a sub par microstructure and performance is the same as s35vn. What's the point? Zt advertise 62hrc but because of their heat treat protocol, 61-62hrc will net less performance than a Spyderco at 60hrc. And good luck finding them in that range for zt. They mass produce these and often will run lower. There is no way that Gerber will use the right heat treat protocol. Austenitizing temp 1140 soak for 20-30min, quench correctly cause 20cv/m390 is very sensitive to quench rate and then Ln2 bath, temper, Ln2 bath then triple 500 temper. And aim for 61-62hrc. Also lazer cutting the blanks will cause issues too.

Gerber gets their blades heat treated by the same company that does benchmade and leathermans. Most companies don’t heat treat their steel in house. It’s generally done by a contracted heat treater. So, if you like benchmades heat treat, gerbers will be the exact same. Please don’t make claims when you don’t have the proper information
@tacticalcenter8658

@@hunterglaspell I have the proper information. Stack Metallurgy does the heat treatment for benchmade and others. The cut testing shows poor performance for m390 and 20cv from benchmade. They also lazer cut the blades out and Bohler specifically say not to. If you know the protocols for these steels you know the performance seen as a result. We've hrc tested them and cut test them. The proof is in the pudding. Do you know anything about Metallurgy? Plenty of heat treaters have spoken about this.

@@tacticalcenter8658 ah you are one of those “cut test” bros. Totally realistic to real world standards, mmhmm. The proof isn’t in the pudding on that. Different steels behave to different materials. Some 8crs will hold a very similar edge to s30v with certain materials because s30v response poorly to some materials 8cr does well in. There is a reason companies like Ontario do lower Rockwells on carbon steels. Any torture test on Kabars becker 1095 will show you they run it too hard for a hard use knife (and for 1095 in general). It has great edge retention, but horrible shock resistance. So much so, the BK2 at a quarter inch thick and has snapped in half long before the gerber strongarm in 420hc (with a much thinner blade stock) doing the same tests (test can be seen on KZbin with repeated results). Lower Rockwell’s are a safety net for companies when people buy their knives and use them hard (which a large portion of their user base does). It’s why ZT was caught doing it years ago. I have a savvy, and the 20cv is really solid in real world applications. Not to mention, nobody, not even you, needs a blade steel like 20cv at full potential. If you cut with your knife so much that you dull 20cv like it’s nothing, I suggest you invest in utility knives. They will fit your role better. 🍻
