I can see how watching both can give perspective from different views. In other words both are useful.

Sometimes tick charts can move a lot faster than this too. Eg ES futures, in very fast regular session, 1000 ticks can be in a few seconds very easily. And when very volatile, there can be multiple bars in the same second. I still like tick charts, because that speed is what I like. But either way, I can set my "speed" (time in seconds or ticks) to find, for me, an ATR value that meets my risk tolerance.

@@nirevt yes, generally I do (987 ticks to be exact, because I like Fib numbers but essentially the same as 1000). It depends a bit on the ATR at the time -- for my risk, I'm looking for about 1.5 to 2x ATR (14 bar setting) -- so if it's really volatile I may change the chart and trade on less ticks, but doing that means it is faster per bar, so there's a trade off there in needing to make very quick decisions. Or instead, I might wait and trade for example after 10:30 NY time, when the session may have slowed down a little.

Hi Thomas, vou said, Tick Chart are a way to incorporate volume. One Tick is one trade, but in one trade one contract or hundreds of contracts can be bought or sold. So you need, as you said too, a volume chart to see the exact volume. So why not using a volume chart right away instead of a tick chart if I want to incorporate the volume? Or is volume not also a valuable information regarding institutional activity for you?

Good point, I used volume chart before but it gives us the same information. If you compare 5k volume chart to 2k tick chart is basically looks the same. I probably should have said volatility instead of volume but it generally goes hand in hand.

Depends how volatile it is and if there is enough liquidity. But price action should be the same if it is liquid enough. In onfe of my videos I showed this strategy with bitcoin. Video about multiple time frames if price actions works there.

Nice video. Thks. You should also add that tick charts are definitely relevant if you trade daytrade and/or scalping, but it won't be necessary to use tick charts if you swing trade where timing the entry isn't that critical compare to a scalping for instance.

I don't use MT I use Ninjatrader so I cannot really say. But you can text your broker. Lastly if you don't have access to tick charts, you can use 1-5 min charts there are also good.

It works even on time based charts. I made a video about does price action work on different timeframes. Please check it out I believe it will be useful. You can use between 1 to 5 minute charts.

Depends if you are scalping or swing trading. I would take a look at 1 minute chart or 5 minute chart and try to find tick chart number that is similar to those timeframes. 2000 tick chart of ES is similar to like 3 minute chart. Start with any number you want. you can start the 2000 tick chart and compare it 1 minute chart. If your tick chart has much less bars you need to lower number of ticks to like 1000 tick chart.

@@stephennn403 You probably need to increase the number of ticks. 1000 tick chart is too small if volatility increases. That is why I use 2000, fast enough to give us good setups but not too fast for fakeouts.

Unfortunately I don't know the list of all the platforms that provide tick charts. Plus I think you are talking about brokers. Ninjatrader, Multicharts, Quantowers provide tickchart. Try to sign up for a free demo with Ninja trader brokerage or AMP Futures. If you have issues to sign up with US brokers, you need to google broker that will accept your county. I don't know that sorry. But demo should be easily accesible to you.

I don't really understand. Option to select tick chart is available for free on all trading platforms. You just have to switch the time based for ticks, you can also change it to volume, range bars and etc.. Maybe you are using tradingview. On there you can't get tick charts for free you have to buy the better version sadly.

@Farsheed Ansari I talked alot with some traders and it seems like metatrader doesn't offer the option to use tick charts. I had no idea that certain platform wouldn't allow it. You are probably going to need to use a different platform for tick charts...
