Cool to see you covering this album! Honestly didn't expect a video on it at all. I personally enjoyed it quite a bit, but still felt somewhat disappointed because I expected a much more lore focused album, and didn't feel that I got one. Regardless, it's got some of my favorite tøp songs on it, so I can't complain all that much.

You are so right about the midwestern christian vibe. I'm one of the people who used twenty one pilots as a stepping stone like you described back in 2015 when blurryface came out and what drew me towards their music was this extreme sincerity. Many other millenial rock bands that I like (Vampire Weekend, MGMT..) who are closer to the intersection of Gen X and millenials have a lot of that Gen X postmodern detachment where you're never sure if you get the irony. TOP have none of that, even when they try to be funny they try super hard. If it hits it hits but it can also get into heavy cringe territory.

Incredibly accurate description of my experience with this band as well. I tend to still find their overwhelming sincerity to be captivating and moving, even when some of the other aesthetic or thematic elements don’t come across quite as well.

AVAA Professor! Loved all the video, I'm fairly certain I cracked a smile as I was watching the video simply because I loved the band. And ya, I enjoyed the album "Clancy"; not only does it have objective merit, but so many twenty one pilots songs hold an especial place in my heart. I feel like the simplicity of their songs allows them to grow alongside the listener's own experiences, even when they do veer toward the cringy in their sincerity. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and I look forward to tuning into another video in the future :]

Age doesn’t matter. I’m 66, my spouse is 73. We are both huge 21 Pilots fans and will be seeing them the first time in Seattle in August. We’re both kind of wondering how we will be accepted when we show up. (And we’re practicing jumping up and down like the do in the videos. The Christian stuff worried me initially as we’re a gay couple who’ve been together 30 years. And both of us have had some pretty bad experiences at the hands of the evangelicals. Still, I’ve seen Tyler waving the rainbow flag during concerts so I try to keep my evangelical paranoia at bay. Oh, BTW - SAI was our introduction to the band and then we moved on to the others. Anyway, we’re huge fans.

Avaa ! As somebody who grew up in the church and is no longer a part of it, there is a whole wealth of indie christian rock/emo out there that isn't in your face worship and that I still regularly re-visit. Manchester Orchestra, Copeland, Mutemath, Mae, Anberlin, Emery, pretty much any band formerly on the label "Tooth and Nail" Records. Great stuff as always!!

Wow, this sounds straight out of the conversations my dad and I had about this album! The parallells are crazy, We too have been fans of the band together since I was around 10 or 11 (I'm 19 now). We saw the band live on the Trench tour, and it opened up the worlds of music we've shared with each other. I'm now a full time musician and music journalist, and twenty one pilots opened that idea up to me as a kid. I also come from a Christian world in east coast Canada; my dad is an avid defender of the early waves of Christian indie rock and grunge. Faith is a balancing act these days, especially as I journey through early adulthood and struggle with the bigotry in evangelical America. Anyway, I could say a lot more BUT I really enjoyed your thoughts on this album. I was surprised to see you cover Clancy as I've been watching your hip-hop reviews for a few months now. I just love what you do!

I love this album. And actually one of the things that attracted me originally to their music was the way they blended reggae with rap and smooth melodies. I have so much respect for Tyler Joseph at this point, I’d listen to him sing colonoscopy results. Yeah, I guess I’m a 45 year old women with a bit of 13 yr old left in her. Trench has been my favorite album by far and it’ll be hard to beat it, but this album has a lot to offer. And the fact that they created videos for every single song is just mind blowing. I love that homemade Midwest vibe they’ve incorporated throughout their video imagery. And this is from a 45-year-old southern female.

I've never been into 21 Pilots so much, they just kind of went off my radar for an unknown reason, despite initially being interested to some of their singles off of their Blurryface and Trench records myself. That being said, I managed to give Clancy a chance and I was hooked to it just from my first listen alone. I kind of get about the mixed feeling from many but for me, it's a **solid good** experience overall. Like, nobody can tell me why I should hate this album or questions my musical preference. Sometimes, you just can tell it if an album is legit w/out needing any further explanation🤷👀

I can't tell if you don't like the lore because you haven't looked into it, or if you have and still just don't vibe with it. Either way, on the surface it does seem a bit cheesy, but once you learn the work and depth he's put into it, the deeper meanings, the metaphors of his own mental health struggle, etc. It becomes a much more meaningful story to follow along while you listen to these albums. I recommend giving it shot if you haven't!

The overcompensating conversation is interesting because, even though it’s not said flat out, I feel as though we see overcompensation A LOT actually especially in the mainstream. The difference is that we see that overcompensating behavior as normal, cool, and as the culture. “I might as well do it because everyone else says it.” We seen that get called by Kendrick on his Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers album and his The Heart Part 5 and then again with his diss tracks at Drake. He broke Drake’s character down in the way I think Pusha T would’ve had he been pushed to that limit. We are in the era (and arguably have been for quite some time) of the death of the celebrity. The culture of celebrity is dead and we’re seeing that more and more with big names getting called out and even dealing with the law in more extreme cases like P. Diddy. Hopefully we see this reflected more in the music, I’m interested how that dichotomy will play out having a “celebrity” whether big, medium or small in status tell us that celebrity culture is dead

I had no idea 21 Pilots is a Coheed and Cambria style story band. Damn, you really live in Rochester?? I lived there briefly, guested at Toracon at RIT once too. I saw Post Malone with 21 Savage at Darien Lake--maybe the worst and most expensive show I've ever seen and first time I felt like a human ant in a sea of indistinguishable white people. Wouldn't recommend. One of my favorite podcasts universes, WATP, comes from there, too.

You almost lost me with the Christian comments. I am in my late 50' and i'm a huge fan of twenty one pilots. I found them on the radio during BF and my love for them hasn't waned. I love the excitement of a new era, because I'm here for whatever musical journey they want to take me on. IMO, each album is better than the one before. Yes, i feel SAI is better than Trench, and i love Trench. They are different moods. Musically Clancy compensates for SAI, which compensated for Trench, which compensated for Blurryface, which probably compensated for Vessel etc. I love the lore, but there's different levels of lore. Tyler has recently explained that Clancy is about the protagonist. Blurryface is about the antagonist. Trench is about the location, whether that's the Trenchiverse or Dema as the mind. SAI fits in better than many realize, myself included. Tyler explained that even before pandemic, he and Josh wanted to write an album about captivity and isolation. And pandemic gave them the opportunity to do that with SAI. The substance abuse was probably set up in Trench. Then with captivity and isolation, the Bishops used drugs, including halucigens, to control Clancy. It's a good day. Now Shy Away, Choker Josh, Trash the Dragon, and the Saturday sub make sense. It's all a trip. The last half of SAI is an attempt to break free. And now Clancy is battling that addiction (notably Vignette, Navigating, Snap Back). Perhaps, Clancy will open the door to go back to SAI and view it from a new perspective. You can ignore all the fantasical elements, but just listen with those themes in mind. Sorry for the long post. TLDR: Love Clancy and it's themes of addiction. Listen to SAI again with the perspective of captivity, isolation, substance abuse. Btw, you can listen to Clancy on repeat even on free KZbin.

On the lore thing the reason it doesn't actually matter is because the fans basically created the lore trying to read into blurryface lyrics too much Tyler took notice of it and created the lore as another way of writing about depression and mental health. Scaled and icy was a continuation on the lore where he was captured and then made to make pop music to keep the masses happy that's why it's pretty out of line from the rest of their work Clancy to me is a return to pre trench with only a little bit of lore in it to appease the fans of the lore and eventually close that chapter i think.

AVAA Professor Skye. I think my biggest problem with Clancy is, if this is the end of (or the next chapter of) the Dema series, it really doesn’t fit the story line. As a stand alone album, separate from the lore, it’s pretty good. It’s a good reflection of Tyler’s mental state and how he is handling it.
@ryanrutkowski9037

I think the most important part about them being a "Christian" rock band is that their music is more about their struggles with God, religion and how Tyler works through his beliefs. He isn't trying to evangelize, he is telling his experience to help anyone in any way, regardless of their beliefs. I think the first verse of "Snap Back", with those cringey lyrics you mentioned xD, shows this feeling. "Blacklisted from forgiveness" can mean the people in his life but also God and how he doesn't feel worthy in his faith anymore.
