And... The buns can represent the benefits of Tyler's creativity since they're in a bag labeled Ned's Bread, the fruits of his labor. As Tyler's on his bike Ride, he throws away a bun a couple of times bc it doesn't taste quite right, like when he's not happy with a song or his fame or his progress. And the bun (creativity) can also be used to pay his fans, like the (inner) child at the lemonade stand (insert 'out here making lemonade' lyric reference here). And at the end of the cycle (bi*cycle) when he reaches his destination, he's found that all that schtuff in his head has made his bread soggy and he has to start over. So our thoughts can have real world consequences. Love how Josh is still there waiting for Tyler. Ever steady, ever present. 💛I There are so, so many references to other songs and themes in this one, it's overflowing with them. Love this song and it's making me cry now every time that chorus hits. Can't wait to sing this with everyone at the shows!! New sub 😊 ❤|-/💛

For those who may not know, the little character on the bag of buns is named Ned and originated from the video for Chlorine, a song about how Tyler’s music is both a help to him and an addiction. I believe he said Ned represented his creativity.

the buns are his currency because it's Ned's Bread and Ned is his creativity, and his creativity is what lets him make music and his music makes money. Josh is waiting for tyler to come back to where he is because he can't make the food (the music) without his creativity. But he waits until the cycle will be over. Notice there's only 1 burger on the grill, not two. It's a throw back also to the line in Chlorine "don't save me a seat, I'll be back when it's all complete."

I know it can be interpreted many ways and that’s usually how they like to style their music/ videos, but I like to think of it as a struggle with a history of depression and the burden it can feel like you’re putting on the people around you. His goal is to get the buns and deliver them to Josh but through his struggles he can’t seem to get them all the way there.

i fully agree with you however I would like to add to it: I also believe that the "backslide" that he so desperately does not want to happen is him relapsing back into his depression when he says "I should of loved you better" he is talking about loving himself better and now the rope is "over my head" as in a physical noose. He knows what he almost did and doesn't know if he will be able to get back out of it next time.

Funny you talked about whether he has tattoos or not, they released a song a few weeks ago called Next Semester and he’s shirtless for a large chunk of that video so his tats and body paint are on full display. It’s also a banger of a song and is just as deep as this one so it’s totally worth checking out (as well as the rest of their music, I firmly believe they don’t have 1 single bad song out of the 6 albums they have released and the 3 songs out of the forthcoming 7th album)

I love your theories! I’ve been following them for awhile..Tyler’s an absolute musical genius! Their music has so many interpretations, but the underlying theme is the battle with his mind. Technically this is the 7th pilots album, Regional at Best came right after self titled but they got signed right after they started putting it out and ended up scrapping it. Some RAB songs were used on Vessel.

Interesting take on the tennis shoes no lace. That was a dark take and wow if true. I was thinking that a shoe with no laces is beneficial because you’re not tripping over them and falling down sort of metaphorically to falling down and backsliding

If you watch closely the guy at the front of the store in the beginning of the video is on the right side and by the end he’s on the left side. I think it symbolizes how the cycle keeps going despite there being different things during the cycle. Something like parallel universes where Tyler knows that this was their destiny even if they changed some parts they would’ve still be in the same position they were at now. Maybe also symbolizing how the end result can be different which is symbolized in next semester.

I think homeboy on the left needs some tuning for TøP but definitely loved homeboy on the right.. lol "Neds bread" "Ned" is a representation of tylers' creativity, "75 cent lemonade OR a neds bread for lemonade" (creativity) and the kid standing there im guessing is a younger version of himself- talking to HIMSELF. That Saturday line gets me... honestly not my favorite title on SAI but theres things to mention - thus being "i shouldnt have made saturday". Lol tyler and his entendre's man... "saturday" was on a couple of commercials for real... and thats all tyler thought about after creating that song... it was only on commercials... honestly 3 out of 13... this IS my favorite.. im getting stressed and chlorine from this... the man, the myth, the legend Josh Dun on the drums produced this as well so holy shit... i still feel bad josh was waiting on those neds breads for his burger, but since he directed it... lay off the drums for awhile and make a tiny burger thats ever so shrinking because Tyler is taking FOREVER !!! - well done lads, BACKSLIDE is my favorite thus far.

i don't know if i agree with the fame thing but i see the plausibility of the connection -- that being said, tyler has said more than once he wonders if he wouldn't have liked something slower than their meteoric rise in 2016. they had already being toughing it out for years, and then worked hard in theaters and clubs, and their arena tour was 85% sold out when their banger stressed out upturned the alt music world and they landed a grammy. even so, everything came on so fast. great to watch you guys watch. i'm going to 13 shows this coming tour and i can't wait to scream along.

i took the shoes with no lace line as a representation of repetition. whenever you wear shoes, you need to tie the laces to make sure they don't fall off. if the process is made easier with shoes that don't have laces, then when you inevitably have to put them back on the process is easier. kinda shows how if you don't have the confidence that you'll overcome something and won't fall back into the same rutt, you're more likely to fall back into it and to do things that make it easier to deal with the next time around. just my take on it though.

I think you're very close but the Buns represent Tyler's creativity because Ned is on the package. And Ned is Tyler's creativity. So he's spending his creativity as a commodity. That's why the little kid takes it as a form of payment . Josh is always going to be there waiting for him because that's what Josh does. And Josh knows that Tyler is going to be in this self-deprecating Loop and he's willing to wait for him regardless of how long it takes. And he is the Anchor Point that Tyler's always been waiting for.

In Lane Boy he says that "I'm in constant confrontation with what he wants and what is poppin' in the industry. Singles on the radio are like currency. Creativity is only free when I'm playing shows." So I believe the hamburger buns in this video represent singles/creativity. So he creates things that he doesn't like and just tosses them away, even though he could use them. That process takes a toll. We see this illustrated in Chlorine, "you in my life is like sipping on straight chlorine." To mentally go to the places he needs for his creative process to work, it takes a toll on his mind. We see this at the end of this video with the buns. What little bit he has remaining is just mush and not usable. So he has to start over with the process. The cycle continues.

Ive heard also that on Twitter, people have been speculating about the bread being religious and if you include the lemonade in the equation, it seems like a Eucharistic feast. Especially if the little boy is: A) himself as a child •and/or• B) a son, the Son/Sun a.k.a. The Big Jeezowski Which would actually make a lot of sense. The lyrics read perfectly to himself as a young depressed kid, trying not to self-harm and also, simultaneously, to God, in whatever form He should choose to take. I know when Tyler was a kid and put out NPI, all his convos with the Big Guy seem to be directed specifically to Jesus Dude, as opposed to Big Dad Dude or The Ghost of Christmas Sass Dude, so this probably still holds true.

There’s too many theories about this song. Most of their songs are about “overcoming” something. So I’m going to say this song could respresent complacency and not wanting to try anything new because he doesn’t want to backslide. I don’t know. All I know is this song is FIRE,,,🔥
