Lots of "ermagahd! Randall did this first!" comments. Here is Synergy's official response regarding the difference between the two companies and their tech: Synergy is quite different than Randall. Below are some of the key reasons. 1) Synergy modules are dual channel - Randall was single channel. 2) SYN-1 and SYN-2 can interact with your amp to add channels. 3) Synergy hardware can “sense” which Synergy module is inserted into it and adjusts the cathode biasing circuit on V1 tube to match the original amp. Patent pending. 4) Modules are from the actual amp builders. Synergy branded modules are of those brands that declined the invitation to join us. In other words, they sound and feel right. 5) The brand owners profit share with each module sold - they get nothing when someone“profiles” or “models” their sound digitally. 6) Synergy is built in USA using Synergy caps. Synergy caps are the “secret sauce” for many boutique brands. They are USA made and quite expensive. 7) We own the patent whereas Randall licensed it. We are in for the long haul. The hardware is more innovative and the modules are more flexible and authentic.

I wasn't attempting to knock the Synergy effort. I was just amazed and happy that someone else picked up the technology and ran with it! The fact that they're "in for the long haul" is not less exciting, it's more exciting. I think it'll be a boon and give new life to the Randall/Egnater preamps already in the marketplace. It's true that Randall tech was single-channel, but it was licensed from Egnater, which was originally dual channel. thermionic-studios.com/node/105

Hi Brian. Hope everything is going great with you. Maybe I missed some info in the video , but can you confirm these modules do fit in a Randall RMS Amp ? I've had my RM20 for about 6 years now . And I have a custom built Plexi /SL+ Module from Scott Souter out of Detroit. This module , for me , was the end of my tone search. I'm over 50 so that was a very long search. LOL. But if these new Synergy Modules are compatible with Randall , I'm ready to start ordering right now . Merry Christmas dude.

This is a great solution considering the limited space in my ex-dining room/studio, that already contains Fender, Marshall and Blackstar amps. (Our houses are much smaller in the UK). As to the people who say "Why bother with tubes, when you have modelling?", I guess they have never played both modelled and tube amps. The real thing has a very different feel and vibe to it. It is much more inspiring to play a cooking tube amp. When I finally got a Fender amp, I actually enjoyed playing a clean sound, even for solos, which is not something I ever felt before. It has changed my playing permanently, regardless of what I will be playing through in the future.

A cool idea (albeit not quite new). A word of caution to those who think getting an SLO preamp will get them an SLO sound - it doesn't work. The SLO power amp section is a big part of the amp's sound (just like it is with most amps), and running the preamp - even designed and built by Mike Soldano himself - through a different power section will NOT make your HRD into an SLO. Yes, even if the power amp uses the same tubes as the SLO. I own a Soldano X88R pre - literally the SLO preamp - and I've run it through every amp possible including my Bogner Uber and Diezel VH4 - amazing amps in their own right. And all you get is an approximation of the SLO sound - never the real thing. Not knocking this product - it quite possibly produces great tones (especially for live situations) - just cautioning those who consider buying this product not to expect an actual SLO or VH4 sound.
@wakjob9617 жыл бұрын

Sorry, did you ask most of us to make that assessment? Not to mention that being all tube doesn't guarantee good tone. This is new MTS. MTS was Bruce's baby. When he left Randall, he took his baby with him and has been toiling for half a decade or more to do it... Right this time. Speculation on whether this was the sticking point why he didn't stick around, but Randall isn't very good at keeping amp designers (as in Fortin who just had enough of them too and left). I don't think they would let him fully realize the quality of MTS he wanted, thus all the original modules being "Genericerized" and needing cap mods and full workovers to be amazing. Modded MTS is fantastic. This is even greater.

Sorry for the long post I would like to add in my experience . I,ve owned/ part designed/modified tube amps for over 30 years. This includes putting power amp input jacks into amplifiers that didn't have them in order to try to recreate some of the “new" ideas here. LIVE use problems- 1/ phase splitter (which is an integral part of the amplifier) differs in most tube amps even between models from the same company (eg Fender Twin, fender vibrolux reverb). Unfortunately this is an integral part of the sound of the power amplifier so you can't get it to sound or feel the same. 2/ The tubes themselves. Unless you are using a flat response power amp (which still has some issues) the tubes in a typical guitar amp will add a character to your preamp - again it won't sound/feel the same. 3/ The actual speaker cab you use. A Marshall plexi at least partly sounds the way it does because of the big 4 x 12 Cabinet that you can barely lift that it runs into.A 12" open back Cab won't sound the same. STUDIO use - in some of the demos it sounds very similar particularly against the backdrop of a heavy band but what is the point in buying it when you could use a high-quality modelling unit that would give you end to end experience of the entire signal chain at a much better price. Some of these units are so good that you simply cannot tell the difference in a recording. These units could be useful for somebody who can't get to grips with modellers and the like, and also for obtaining a proportion of the component of the original sound. Most importantly it will be popular with the "tube fairies" because as we all know in “tube fairy land" it will always sound “better" if it's played through real tubes- yeah right..... as a small aside I've owned some of Brian's gear euphoria, Tweed, blackface and I have nothing but respect for his pedals.he's not claiming here that it will sound the same as he knows it won't.....

Sounds great. Thruw all the years I played with less pedals (14 years country) During the make over to pop and rock am using more pedals. @FangPaw7 жыл бұрын
Very impressive on the clean channel(s), especially the AC30. The distorted channels - not so much, because it's all about pre-amp distortion. It's the combination of pre-amp and power tube distortion that gives a cranked old-school (non-Master Volume) tube amp that magic sound.
@PatatoKeftes7 жыл бұрын
Ye ye, its been done before and it's called tube pre-amp pedals. Seriously a module is around 450$, the housing unit around 550$ and you still need an actual amp to power it. There are 3rd party manufacturers that make exceptional high-plate voltage tube preamps. Gurus, Kingsley, Fredamp, Effectrode, Koch and the list goes on and on, most of them with direct balanced or unbalance out and at a much lower price point. Even Carvin and Soldano used to make a tube pre-amp in a pedal format with the exact preamp sections of their own amps. Seriously, it's a great idea but it's too pricey and it's not really the real deal, it's a close approximation just like the non licenced products.
@peterjessop18787 жыл бұрын
Patato Keftes Yep I couldn’t agree more as a long time user of valve pre amps myself.
@legozach775847 жыл бұрын
Actually, it literally is the preamp of the different amps. The difference happens with the power amps (which it doesn't emulate) and the cabinets EDIT: that said, the pedal preamps are cheaper and awesome on their own right
@PatatoKeftes7 жыл бұрын
Just take the time and get the facts straight. It's right there in their website. The modules are new designs to SOUND as authentic as possible, not componently faithful transfers of the actual pre-amp into a module format. Some of the Marshall modules are even altered by Friedman for added gain etc which of course also means not accurate reproductions. These designs of course are restricted by cost (399$) size and features (2 12ax7 tubes and maximum 2 channels). These are some of the limiting factors that the designers had to work within to recreate as much as possible the pre-amps given the restrictions. Which, again, is what tube pre-amp pedals have always done long time. The only difference is that for most of the modules the design came (as advertised) by the designer of the original pre-amp. I do agree on pedal tube pre-amps, they can sound fantastic and some of the higher-end ones nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. I'm not against this modular design, I kinda like it, but they are just a financially non-preferable solution to a problem that didn't even exist.

I am a preamp loving Martha Focker. Historically preamps were 1U rackmounts. Some of my favorites, ADA, Rockman, Engl, Marshall, Mesa. There are also 2U, some of my favorites Mesa, Bogner, Soldano, Black Widow. Without reinventing the wheel I've always done routing and switching with MIDI. So much gear, you end up needing a patch bay, but the old Switchblade digital routing matrix serves as a 16x16 i/o. Maybe Synergy will give us something new, and let us route dozens of these things. Sounds expensive, however, and probably why I'll remain interested in the powered 1&2 space units. This also explains why I've never used pedals. But you'll miss your old combo. There's no single solution. For me, the solution was the Switchblade from Sound Sculpture because that's the unit that allowed me to change patches with one button press. You want a Vibrolux straight in? Boom. You want an old Marshall, boom. You want an old 80s hair metal, boom. Quite simple, the SBGL is flawless fast.

I've been lately spending a bit of time around youtubers demoing these modules ... one day I thought they were fantastic ... the next day "wait a minute" ... and then again they were fantastic. The way I see it is that one should buy them all (you can't get away with only a couple of them) and at that point the total cost is far more than an original amp ... ok you may get a stereo output that you can't get from an amp but still 6000 bucks approx it's a lot of money. I decided I'll wait a bit longer ....

I love the concept but when working with modular electronics of that type, I've always found them to be problematic in the long run. For example, I once had a Seymour Duncan Convertible. It was a great sounding amp and extremely versatile with the plug and play modules (using a connection that was very similar to the Synergy). Yet that SD Convertible was an accident waiting to happen. It would die about every other gig due to the modules losing connectivity (I'd have to open up the module area and push on them to get the amp to work again. I finally just relegated it to the practice room (which was a real waste of a lot of money). So... for Mark Wampler or other electronics gurus who know more than I do, how do we know this device won't have the same problems? (or do we)
@frankstetka72064 жыл бұрын
I too thought this was a neat idea in the past but knowing how much gear gets knocked around 🤣. The good news with this product may be that it’s potentially better quality connections and lighter weight than a head or combo which can help with the being knocked around bit. It’s a very cool concept for geeks with $$ and best for studio use in my opinion because if you find your sound through this process chances are you should just get an amp built or maybe rack it all up in some stupid heavy road case with lots of foam padding and blah blah- hmm if anyone ever tours again 🤣🤣

They don't use any glue or silicone with their Electrolytic caps, and depending on what your using a lot of wiring is packed into tight places and sometimes severed even during assembly. I don't see how this stuff can handle jolts. I don't know how easy it is to get the plating coat for the contacts on the modules either.

3 days and 346 comments. The signs of a controversial topic! Great video, and thanks for posting. OK, I'm a gigging guitarist and I use one amp - for a long time, a two-channel Mosfet Sessionette 75, and more recently, a Blues Deluxe Reissue. I generally have a touch of reverb, and use only the overdrive channel, set it on the edge of breaking up and use the guitar's volume control to clean up. I also have a delay pedal in the loop, again, with just one setting, always on and adding a bit of colour, but really in the background. Also, just one guitar, using the pickup selector to get different tones. The point is, I see other guitarists doing much the same. We don't use multiple amps and different sounds all through a gig. Once you're happy with your sound, that's it. Anyone here using multiple different sounds/amps during a gig?

+Brian Wampler So, being essentially a metal player who also happens to love classic rock, modern country, roots, blues, bluegrass, jazz, swingabilly a la Brian Setzer and what have you I can see myself using these different preamps in my studio for the metal tones from all the amps I cannot afford. Can´t wait to get my hands on two units and a load of modules and start combining them for the ultimate metal tone into a stereo 4x12 with G12-t75s in the bottom and v30s in the top. Perhaps even with a Peavey Classic 50/50 dual mono bloc as a power amp,- would sound amazing. Will probably be expensive but something I am willing to do since it would give me the opportunity to record these the old school way with actual amps, speaker cabs and, lo and behold, microphones,- what do you know .... Sold - for metal. For anything not metal, see above, I would use my trusty old Peavey Classic 50-410s, yes, two of them, since I love combining tones, and in front of them I would use good pedals with the caractheristics of classic amps, ie. Wampler Plexi Drive, Carl Martin AC Tone etc. I have a question however. How do I match the different impedances of high impedance passive guitars, hi-end " boutique" pedals that will most likely be at line level at the outputs and inputs on amps that expext to see low level high impedance guitar signals coming to them ? Clarification would be much appreciated, either here in the comment section or better yet as a full video that once and for all sets these topics straight. I am convinced you would be the man to do it. Thanks for great pedals and all of the great content, - and merry christmas and a happy new year to you.

So if you were running this through the power section of a solid state power amp vs tube would there be a tonal difference or just a feeling? Both? I understand that solid state can tend to distort in an unpleasant way while cranked tube amps give a great sound and feel but I've never personally experienced this being as tube amps can typically be very expensive not only to purchase but to maintain.

Question on the SYN2, is the SYN2 Stackable/Daisy chainable? Meaning can i control two SYN2 with one footpedal, channel/amp switching. My idea is to have SYN2 w, SOL/PLEXI The on the other SYN2, Friedman/Diezel Or is there a bigger chassy that can take more modules?

Most guys would use these to add a really good Gain channel to a clean amp. My favorite two Gain/Muscle amps are the Friedman BE 100 Deizel V4 , However their clean channels are not so good. I wonder what one of these would sound like to add a better clean channel on one of these amps !

Apparently there are a few new modules being released at NAMM this Jan. Rumor has it that one is a ODS and the other is a Friedman two channel Buxom Betty/BE combination. Very cool things down the road for Synergy!

@@davidfaustino4476 every mod I have compares to the new ones in every way. Others report the same. All mine are Salvation and Sacred Groove. No fizz at all, pure tone. To think that Synergy is better by default is just not prudent in my opinion.

I have a Hot Rod Deluxe, and I, too, am not a fan of the distortion channel. It's terrible. I just use the clean channel and use pedals for my overdrive/distortion. It works, but there's something sad about an amp that only works as an overpriced speaker. These Synergy amp modules look like an awesome alternative Keep the great vids coming, Mr. Wampler!

So basically it let's you bypass the amp's preamp section? So the only variable in getting an exact sound then is power section? So if you want the amp to sound exactly like the original you need an similar power section (same tubes)?

Randall has the RM series that is very similar except you have to buy their amp, and then you load it with modules. Seymour Duncan had something too.

This thing is supposed to be completely compatible to Randal or Egnaterl modules. I guess someone bought the patent and reissued it with new names in the game.

Patato Keftes they don’t look like they’re the same size. Hard to tell on this video
@legozach775847 жыл бұрын
They are intended by Synergy to be reverse compatible with those, so they should be the exact size and shape

It is Egnater doing one more iteration of the same basic thing he's been doing for years...through various outlets. One more Jaws/Rocky/Star Trek...another 'modern remake'...or actually a different movie? Time will tell.

Hi Brian, please help me. Like preamps pedals and this preamps modules - what is better, plug into guitar amp clean channel or into return fx and use only the power amp ? Thanks a lot from Rio de Janeiro/ Brazil

Cool. I think I would have renamed and inverted the operation of the bypass switch such that it turned an LED on when the unit was active. It seems backwards to me.

I’m impressed! What pickups are in that guitar?

Ok, this may be a silly question but... if one is only interested in the sounds from the Synergy module, I suppose you're only using an amp for its speaker? In other words, isn't it bypassing both the front-end and power-amp of your (say) Fender Hotrod? And in that case, isn't it more effective to just use the Synergy module and a speaker cabinet?

I bought the full system. Syn 2 and the 5050 head with the BE, DS, and the B man. They are good. But I would make sure that the amp your plugging the Pods into has enough wattage. I first used this through my Bogner Atma 18 watt head through a shiva 2x12 (before I used the 5050 head). The pods want to compress early in a lower wattage amp which makes them not hit the full volume of what the amp can handle by its self. Which makes them hard to really control (overdrive gets uncontrollable). I own a BE 100 for my road rig. I was hoping I could down size my rig and give myself options. But the pods don’t match each other very well. You’ll get one pod like the BE that is super thin compared to the DS and the BMan. Once you get the 5050 head this all acts a lot better. However it’s just still not quite right. The pods are still mismatched. I was really hoping this system would work but I feel the system needs kinks worked out. If I had the ability to review I would have loved to show these points out. Honestly (I’m not a pedal guy). But you would be better off getting a nice $1500 -$3000 amp head (since you’ll be spending at least a $1000 to get started with the system being reviewed) and just buy pedals for it to achieve what they are trying to achieve. Recording wise I can see this product really shine. I feel like I bought the first year of a new car. When I probably should have waited another year when they worked the kinks out.

I believe the T/DLX is actually Twin/Deluxe, so Twin Reverb on one channel, Deluxe Reverb on the other. Both the sound and website description point to that direction anyway.

They've always been and will always be.. no matter how close these new emulators get.. it can never get that feeling when you lock in with a good tube amp. That can never be replicated with DSP!

Dude were you playing Saigon Kick on the Morgan Module. It sounded good!!
@wigon7 жыл бұрын
Tubes I think are indeed here to stay. It's not that their sound can't be emulated. However, the "Feel" of tubes in the way they react to your playing is something I've yet to find duplicated in any analog or digital emulation. That being said, the Hotone series of micro-amps are SCARY accurate simulations of tube amps. As such it's going to boil down to how many $$$$ that a guitar player has to spend. If I had the $$$$ I'd love to buy Synergy modules to run into my Crate 50 watt stealth tube amp. This demo I think sounds amazing btw. Great work on micing up the amps perfectly. Ribbon mics I take it?

I thought the Metropoulos was very authentic with the Whitfill Tele. Very similar tones that Lance Keltner gets in his demo's with that guitar and George's amps.
