In part 3 of our special series on human ancestry, we investigate how closely related we all really are. Basic math tells us that all humans share ancestors. But you’ll be amazed at how recently those shared ancestors lived. Thanks to genetic data in the 21st century, we’re even discovering that we really are all descended from one mother.

I always thought about this as a kid. it intrested me so much. like there is aboslutely no way there is 8 billion of us and we dont have (at LEAST) one common ancestor in our bloodline. meaning we're all related in some way, i mean, back then, we only had so many humans and since eventually8 each family will join with another leaving only a few families left, we had to have done something with imbreeding.

Wow, I’ll take you up on that invitation sir. I throughly enjoyed this video. I and tried to contact a person on an educational program where there was a scientist that started out in Africa taking dna from several of the indigenous people, and then took the theoretical path that people may have take , and continued taking dna samples along the way. He did this all the through Europe, up through Russia, Siberia, across the land bridge ( what was there many years ago) a across and into Alaska, down through Canada, down into the Americas. Still taking dna samples. He did present a video tv program several years ago, it I failed to find him. But your video is so much as close to that previous show. Enjoyable.

Related doesn't mean incest. Incest only applies when two are not just related but very CLOSELY related by one or two generations like parents, siblings, uncles and so on, otherwise it's not incest. In fact it would be weird if members of a same species were not related like how would they even be able to reproduce in the first place ? The reason we can reproduce with other humans is because we are related enough so that our gametes are compatible to start fertilisations. So yes all members of the same species like humans are related otherwise we wouldn't be considered the same species in the first place.

The number shown is for (almost) 39 generation ago. The formular for figuring out the number of ancestors n generations ago is 2^(n+1) - 2. If you start with 1 person at generation 0 (you) and keep doubling, the number of people at exactly generation n, is simply 2^n, which is one more person than the sum of all people in all previous generations, which is one less than 2^n. (Mathematically 2^n + 2^n = 2^(n+1)) This means that the total number of people on a complete family tree of n generations is 2^(n+1) -1. Now, if you exclude yourself (because you aren't your own relative), then you have 2^(n+1)-2 relatives at generation n. This gives you: Generation 4 = 2^(n+1)-2 = 2^5 - 2 = 32 - 2 = 30 (correctly shown at beginning of video) Generation 39 = 2^(40)-2 = 1,099,511,627,774 relatives Generation 40 = 2^(41)-2 = 2,199,023,255,550 relatives
