The reason the actual number of ancestors is much less than say for example your 15th grandparent which can roughly be calculated as 2 to the 15th power or 33,000 is simply due to inbreeding. In Canada, believe it or not, it is legal to marry your first cousin. I would love to say it doesn't happen, but it's rare. I do know a set of first cousins that are married. They are totally normal people, more-or-less, but have ooooooooone strange feature... that being that they married their cousin! Now, there is a town not too far from here who's residents only has 2 last names. I shutter to think what their family tree would look like...

I do genealogy as a hobby, and once found a 1st. Oisin 5x removed that was alive when my mother was born (1970). The cousin was born in 1870 and died in 1973. This helped me understand just what that removal meant.

Fun fact- I did a DNA kit last year, and it turns out I have over 800 relatives, all living in Canada or the northern US. My family is largely European, so I was surprised to see that it looks like everyone came over (not a single match in Europe- maybe they just haven’t done a test?) , and also surprised since most of them were 2nd or 3rd cousins that my mom had never heard of (possibly on my bio dad’s side). Haven’t contacted any of them yet, because there are some family things that should probably be left to my mother to wade through.

I had to watch this after reading the Silmarillion to truly understand the incest happening between Olwe and Elmo's descendants. Olwe and Elmo are brothers. Olwe's granddaughter is Galadriel. Elmo's grandsons are Celeborn and Galathil. Galadriel and Celeborn marry, and are second cousins. But it gets worse Galathil has a great grandson, Elrond. Galadriel and Elrond are second cousins twice removed by blood because they share the parents of Olwe and Elmo. But Galadriel is also Elronds great grandaunt by marriage, because Celeborn is his Great Granduncle. It gets one level worse. Galadriel has a daughter, Celebrian. Guess who the hell she marries. Her third cousin once removed, and grandnephew Elrond. Oh no. I lied. It actually gets another tiny step worse. Elrond had a brother Elros. They are half elven and given the choice to be human or immortal elves. Elrond picks elf and has his daughter Arwen (already a product of gross incest), and Elros picks human. Elros' distant descendant is Aragorn. Making Aragorn and Arwen distant cousins as well. The story plays this for poetics as the reunion of the broken half elven houses. Yes. The reunion of two brothers children. My brain hurts.
