Are We Alone in the Universe? The Surprising Probability of Alien Life

In this short video, we learn about the mind-blowing number of potential Earth-sized planets that may exist in the universe. According to recent studies, on average, every star has at least one planet, and one fifth of those have Earth-sized planets.
With approximately 100 billion stars in our Milky Way galaxy alone, this means there could be billions of Earth-like planets in our galaxy. And when you consider the 100 billion galaxies within sight of the Hubble Space Telescope, the numbers become almost unfathomable. With this information, it's hard to believe that we are the only intelligent life in the universe.

Why is it sad? I think keeping a fantasy is something valuable. Its like that one crush.. once you know what is under the clothing the magic disappears. Or when u buy a lottery ticket, you start fantasize what u going to do when u win. Its pretty obvious if u watch all the winners telling how their life changed it isnt actually really a valuable experience.. still the magic trick is that u can only fantasize about it which makes it a that amazing thing to imagine.

I mean almost all the individuals running countries were born before the boom of the internet. How is that any type of argument? People like to sound intelligent by putting forth a "logical argument" but you sound silly to someone who thinks deeper. Learn about what happens when we enter singularity, learn about our purpose and what we will achieve. You will understand that reaching singularity will spell world peace. It's inevitable (if we make it). If other intelligent civilisations reached singularity and beyond, they achieved peace. Barbaric lifestyle equals pending evolution. The idea for that started with an nuclear bomb. If one flips a coin (or simulate this to remove the unlikely chance of it landing on the edge), and wants the result to be Heads, the odds are 50/50 or 1-to-1. If one flips it twice, the odds for that next toss are the same...and it doesn't matter how many times u flip it. The odds of _any_ given flip resulting in.the desired outcome will always be the same. BUT That's *not* what is being considered here. What we are testing are the odds of getting Heads *at least once.* The formula for calculating this is p^t-1 where P=the number of Possible outcomes and T=the number of Trials. So, for two coin tosses we have 2 (Heads or Tails), raised to the power of 2, minus 1 equals 3, which looks like this... HH HT TT TT The only way that we don't get the desired outcome of *at least one* Heads is if the respective results of both tosses are Tails. This is a 3-1- in favor of the desired outcome occurring *at least once.* For 3 tosses, it would be 2^3-1, or 7-to1, which looks like this.... HHH HHT HTH HTT THH THT TTH TTT And so on. The point here is that any time there are at least 2 trials, it is more likely than not that the desired outcome will occur *at least once.* That doesn't guarantee that it _will_ occur. That doesn't help predict on which trial(s) it will occur. But it *is* _more likely_ to occur at least once than to not occur at all; and the more trials there are, the greater the odds are in favor of it occurring. How does that apply here? If we consider the idea of Hospitable verses Inhospitable planets, due to sheer number of trials based on how many planets there are (more than 2), there is a greater liklihood of there being another Hospitable planet than not. And a number of Hospitable planets have been identified in the Milky Way galaxy alone. If we consider just those planets and whether they Host life or they Not inhabited, since (again) there are more than 2 Hospitable planets (something like 50 in the Milky Way) it *is* _more likely than not_ that at least one is Inhabited...and so on. The claim that extraterrestrial life _does_ exist would need a lot more evidence, but if the claim is restricted to mere _probablility_ of existence, the maths alone support this; and this is assuming only the conditions to support life _as we know it._ It doesn't even consider the possibility of life evolving under different conditions; and there is insufficient evidence to support that the conditions for life here are required. So, one is right to say that one _believes_ it is _more likely_ that there is life elsewhere in the universe. One is also right to say that one *knows* that it is _more likely_ that there inside elsewhere. The only thing that would be wrong is to say that one *knows* that life *does* exist elsewhere.

The more we learn about Earth's history and the history of the solar system, the more unlikely it seems that intelligent life with a civilisation could have evolved anywhere in the solar system. Too many factors like having a Moon to keep the seasons stable, like having Jupiter to sweep up meteors and comets, like the Earth being large enough to have plate tectonics and volcanoes, like our lineage not being wiped out after each of the five or so almost life killing events on the planet during the last few million years, like the planet being big enough to hold only a substantial atmosphere and having a still active magnetic field to protect it, are required to be "just right" to have allowed us to evolve. There are potentially a rather large number of these factors to consider and which could be added to the Drake equation. If we apportion a coin toss probability to each of these factors then if there are 100 such factors, then 2¹⁰⁰ is around 10³⁰. So imagine running the Drake equation with its current factors and then dividing that answer by 10³⁰. This would be a very small number indeed. I.e. it's quite possible that as an intelligent civilisation, we are alone in the galaxy. I do think microbes and the like might be on lots of worlds and moons out there. Just not intelligent life.

Likewise the conditions that allow intelligent life to evolve are highly unusual. In our case a series of very lucky flukes. Of the 5,000,000,000 species which have ever lived on Earth only one has made civilisations. The occurrence of technological civilisations may be far less than one per galaxy, which would explain the fermi paradox.

Since we don’t know how life started on Earth we can’t really calculate the odds of it starting elsewhere. I used to be a firm believer that there simply _had_ to be life on other planets but I’m no longer so certain. It’s insane to think that in the vastness of the universe we are the only planet to have life, but so many insane things turn out to be true.

Called a cab and a silver disc showed up. The driver's head was shaped like a light bulb. I said "7-11" but he dropped me off at some place called Proxima B. He wasn't a very good cab driver, at one point he said "I'm loster than ship"

You can’t “Do the math” because you’re presuming that distribution of Earth-like planets are a given.

It's possible that the light getting to places in space that have intelligent life is millions of years behind where we are now.
