I get that. A year ago my mom was more entrenched in her normalcy bias than she is now. A year ago it was "yes there may be some items missing but it will catch up and all will be well." Saw her the other night and casually brought up she went on a 500 dollar costco trip....still won't admit something is seriously wrong but it's a start

Out of nowhere, my 10 year old son asked about drafts yesterday while we were working in our garden. He was asking at what age it happens, because he was worrying about his older (13yo) brother. It was heartbreaking to hear the worry in his voice and small relief that the age isn't 15 (which is what he thought). 😭😔💔

BUNGEE CORDS - I realize any one smart enough to be listening to Patara may already know this but just in case. We used a bungee cord in our motor home and when I released it I was hit in the eye. The eye globe burst and 3 surgeries later I was told my eye couldn't be saved. God blessed me with a bit of light coming in so the Dr. decided to do more tests and I still have my eye 17 yrs later. My mother happened to have a tumor on her optic nerve and had her eye removed years before. I was not a bit frightened with the Lord holding my hand (and a wonderful husband too). Be very careful...apparently this happens more than you think. Just FYI for my fellow Patara family!!❤️

that happened to my sister in laws husband also, strapping down lumber, it let go and smashed his eye. Irreparable. He got a artifical eye, just for appearances. Use rachet straps instead. Bungies are freakin' dangerous! I'd rather use rope and patiently untie for re-use.

I really have to wonder, because years ago, when times got really tough we moved into a house in winter with a bag of beans, and my ex "accidentally" shot an elk (literally fell in the snow with his rifle, went off, and it hit and killed an elk) . We ate elk chili all winter. Then in spring, a volunteer garden appeared, with tomatoes, squash and onions. I've always called that "Gods garden" cause we desperately needed it and it appeared. I have to wonder, with all the comments below of "volunteers" whether they aren't just Gods tears for what we've come to.

I was trying to get our grass to grow in the backyard (it was 90% mud/dirt). After getting the seeds to sprout and grow, I let it get super overgrown before mowing it. There were 7 tomatoes plants pop up that I didn't plant. It makes me wonder how many plants we mow down every week that we'd keep if we would've only known they were growing.

I can't stress this enough....get a mulberry tree...You can eat the berries and leaves. You can also make tea out of the leaves and use the bark for medicinal purposes. Also if you are raising chickens they will eat the leaves. You will have to make a powder out of it and put it in their feed when they are chicks to get them use to it. So happy I have this tree!

That was my great mamaw. She had 12 kids. 4 boys in The military Her youngest was my papaw. War was over by the time he was of age. My great uncles were amazing men not only for serving their country via WW2 and the Korean War but because of how they were raised. My papaw died when I turned 1 year old. And most of my great uncles had already passed except one who was the humblest man I’ve ever known. And he allowed me to get to know my papaw through his memories and stories. Learning from our ancestors is extremely important and so many take them for granted.

The problem is that the squash and pepper keep loosing their blooms before fruit sets. My potatoes are doing great though. If all I can grow on this balcony is potatoes then that is what I will be focusing on. One vegetable is better than nothing!

I haven’t been able to find roma tomato seeds so I experimented and bought some tomatoes from the store, sliced them in thick slices, and planted them in soil in 4 pots, they have now sprouted. Hhuurraayy!!!! I now have roma tomato plants. Oh how fun. Will seed save some when they are ripe. My potatoes are now doing awesome in my laundry baskets. I have red and yellow growing. Just planted a bucket of russets. Waiting for them to pop up thru the soil. Trying new stuff everyday. Keep busy. Thank you Patara for all your wisdom and truth preaching. My father and his brother were in WW2, Daddy was in the army on a hospital ship and my uncle was in the navy in a sub. Daddy was the youngest of eleven. Daddy didn’t talk much about anything but shore leave in Italy. Mom and Daddy gardened every year. Mom had a pantry in the garage that Daddy built and insulated to keep things from freezing. I am trying to do as much as I can to be prepared, watering my raised beds almost every day and my in ground garden about half as often, they’re not much but every little bit helps. I am canning everything I can. If only my dishwasher worked better things could move quicker and not be as overwhelming, but I do what I can with what I have. If only DH could sleep with all the noise I make in the kitchen I could work all night and sleep all day.🤔

My youngest son came to me today to inform me that he is enlisting into the Air Force and is planning to go in January. I have to say this second time around I feel more nervous about my youngest going into serve than I did when my older boy joined. The world is in a different place so it is uncomfortable to think about. We have a rule of thought when it comes to joining. If you are going to serve may it be in the air. Closer to God ensures you not getting stuck in between life and death. Or at least that is the hope. The best view is in the sky. I love my babies and don’t ever want them to suffer.
