Wow! Very informative and interesting at the same time. I am not even from the US but I am still interested in the idea of the US being a sort of a new Roman Empire and the comparisons between them! Thank you so much for this!

Read the war with Mexico reviewed by Abiel Livermore he talks all about that subject and the comparison to the decline of the Roman Empire: Rome thought it was her destiny to divide and conquer nations, she even said as you do now “I will conquer a peace” yet where is Rome, this mistress of the world today? Whoever knows the future fate of this Roman diety terminus , so recently taken under the patronage of American democracy, will find his ample curiosity fulfilled in the luminous pages of Edward gibbons “decline and fall of the Roman Empire”. And if the anglo saxons, your British blood think they have a destiny other than this, than raising up races and nations, spreading Christianity, and administering just and fair laws, let them beware before the stumble upon the “thick bosses and bucklers (shields) of the almighty “ who have already drank up the blood of the worlds finest conquerors and invaders! We may hug the delusive phantom that we are a species of Israelites amongst the nations, but let them remember israel too did not escape the fiery furnace of retribution from god for all of its transgressions and backslidings! -war with Mexico reviewed, Abiel Livermore American Peace Society

A helpful review of his book from Amazon: "The desire to see Ancient Rome as a warning for America is natural for a conservative like myself but it has problems. Namely, that Rome is as dissimilar to us as it is similar. Still, I instinctively love a declensionist narrative as much as the next conservative so was hoping for good insights here. I didn’t really see anything. The most striking thing here is that Murphy, a big government liberal, more or less undercuts his own beliefs about the desirability of big government by pointing out how Rome’s ever-expanding bureaucracy led to the state’s insolvency by the end of the 4th century. Then he turns around and says, “But we know big government today does many wonderful things, so...” Iow he refuses to learn one of the main lessons of his own book."

Good question. I have come to believe Wilson was something of a fascist. Why he has a center of free speech named after him I don't know.

The centers name was given by the democrat congress in the 60's. An attempt is being made now to hide their association. Typical BS

the whole notion of comparing rome and america (although I understand the interest) is ludacris, we have no border rivals and we haven't even been around for 300 years

25:58 - Should the children of people who are here illegally be allowed to get in state tuition ? - I would say yes. This only makes us stronger. What's the connection between the question and the reply ? :)

The first 90% of Are We Rome? contains trivial academic comparisons and the last 10% is mostly liberal rant on the beauty of legal and illegal immigration, of which Mr. Murphy fails to acknowledge any negative impacts. The last chapter, The Borders, is a rigorously perverted definition of a border. While evangelizing unlimited immigration, Mr. Murphy makes the case for acculturation while calling it assimilation. He promotes college tuition subsidy for illegal aliens, and of course, soccer and AMNESTY for illegal aliens. The flawed, useless ending seems to be the real purpose of Are We Rome?

In your reply you have failed to address any negative impacts yourself. If you are talking labor statistics, Immigration's effect is insignifigant. And discussing laws surrounding the uses and purposes of borders is not a perversion. But a healthy exercise in policy. Substituing assimilation with your euphemism seems only to be a symptom of your "acculturation" to the nixon administration. Your gross use of hyperbole belongs more on a positive review of the movie Innerspace on IMBD
