This is for Nick: Just wanted to let you know there have been many people that have gone through what you're going through, including myself. It can be very difficult, stressful, feels like your world has fallen apart, so much sadness and anger, but be strong, lean on your family if need be, do whatever takes to help you get through it. I don't know what your diagnosis is or the type you have, but if it's treatable then do what they ask of you as I did, and here I am 10 yrs later talking to you, I work and enjoy life, I have several grandchildren that I share my love with, and it's a beautiful thing, and I owe all of that to my doctors, but mostly to my family, they all contributed to me being cancer free, and I love them all being there for me. I wish you all the best and hope you have a full recovery, be strong man 👊

Not well received? It got to number one though, sold ten million copies, and gave the American recording industry a much needed shot in the arm, as album sales in the late 1970s were generally not very high. All previous Zeppelin albums went back on the Billboard charts.

The critics pretty much hate all their albums, odd considering the huge long lasting fan base they have. That’s why, don’t always pay attention to critics. All the different music they played, there’s something for everyone, the really smart ones, love all the different songs. All Of My Love, on this same album, is a beautiful tribute to Plants 5 your old son that passed away. The band was touring here in the US, when Plant got the horrible news, Plant almost gave up the band to become a teacher. Thanks for your reaction, & keep delving into Led Zeppelin, it doesn’t get any better then Zep.

Yeah, most of the critics hated them from day one. I Iike this album, but I've read that Page and Bonham talked a lot about wanting to go back to a harder sound for their ninth album, axe most of the keyboard stuff. Of course, it would have been awesome if we'd got a chance to hear what that might have sounded like. :(

@@supertrexandroidx my understanding, In Through The Out Door was pretty much Plant & JPJ. Even with recording, Plant & JPJ recorded in the morning, & Page & Bonham later on. Page & Bonham loved when they could go more wild, with heavy drums & guitar riffs/solos, so that really wouldn’t surprise me at all.

The idea for the drum part came from what is now called the Purdie shuffle. Bernard Purdie is the drummer that originally came up with this drum pattern, and Bonham put his twist on it. Awesome! As did Jeff Porcaro of Toto on the song Rosanna. Again awesome!

Led Zeppelin's last studio album 'In through the out door' in 1979 (besides the 1982 album 'Coda' w/ unreleased Zeppelin tracks) was a welcome return for the band after their disastrous 1977 American tour and the tragic death of singer Robert Plant's son (who was 5) In late 1978, Robert Plant informed Zeppelin's management that he was ready to work on new music... The problem was that Peter Grant, their protective manager, was going through a divorce and struggling w/ health issues ... Their tour manager Richard Cole was in bad shape from drugs (he would be fired in 1979) ... Guitarist Jimmy Page was also struggling w/ he+++n addiction and drummer John Bonham was in poor shape as well from heavy drinking. Led Zeppelin was booked at Abba's Polar Studios in Sweden which had the newest synthesizer technology and equipment... Bassist John Paul Jones was intrigued by the instruments at his disposal and willing to experiment w/ the music but he & Robert Plant was the only one showing up to write new songs... Jimmy Page said that he wanted Zeppelin to do something different - they would record music and release the tracks in 4 separate EP's... But another issue was that Page was not showing up to write new material. With studio time booked and costing money, John Paul Jones opted to step up and write the music and used his experience as a keyboardist and arranger to deliver the new material and Robert Plant supplied the lyrics... Page did contribute and co-produce the tracks but he was mostly absent. The music was not as heavy as past Zeppelin albums and had a lot of electronics for the first time... As the sessions ended, it was clear that there were not enough new songs to make 4 EP's as Jimmy Page had planned... John Bonham did his drum tracks quickly and left the studio... John Paul Jones oversaw most of the work and opted to release it as 1 studio album - 'In through the out door'. Close to 2 years after Led Zeppelin's last concert, the news came out in 1979 that Led Zeppelin would headline 2 massive shows at Knebworth, England... reportedly playing to over 200K fans over 2 nights... Jimmy Page started giving interviews again (which was rare) about Led Zeppelin's upcoming shows and a new album 'In through the out door' ... which would be released in the Fall of 1979. The Knebworth shows were a huge success but behind the scenes, their manager Peter Grant took most of the ca$h from the event's ticket sales and a row erupted as the opening bands demanded that they get paid. 'In through the out door' was released in '79 and went to #1 on the charts, becoming one of the year's biggest selling records (6x platinum in the US to date) ... even though Led Zeppelin did not tour for the rest of the year. Robert Plant and his wife welcomed another son and he was not as willing to leave his family & go back on tour for months on end... Led Zeppelin booked occasional shows in Europe in 1980 and hoped that a full comeback tour would happen (Because of a violent incident on the 1977 tour, Led Zeppelin could no longer be booked in the West Coast because the major promoter there, Bill Graham, vowed never to bring Led Zeppelin back there) The plan was that once the touring was done, Led Zeppelin would start work on a 'heavy' album of new songs. Finally, Robert Plant agreed to a tour of North America that was to begin in the Fall of 1980... Led Zeppelin began rehearsing quietly in England as tour dates were announced... However, drummer John Bonham was drinking heavily and struggling... At one rehearsal in September, he showed up drunk and couldn't even play - the sessions were called off for the day and John Bonham went out drinking again before returning to Jimmy Page's house to crash... The next morning, John Bonham was found dead in one of the guest rooms... He had asphyxiated overnight from throwing up while passed out... He was only 32. Months went by after John Bonham's death went public... Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones retreated to their homes and never got back together... In December, Led Zeppelin released a statement that the band would not continue without John Bonham... Robert Plant later called the idea of Led Zeppelin carrying on w/ a new drummer "obscene". Their manager Peter Grant quit the music business and lived quietly in the English countryside until his death in 1995. Led Zeppelin's label Swansong was finished by 1983.

Not only the drumming - but the drum sound!!! Awesome recording - especially that bass drum sound! Many try to copy the sound, very few achieve it. Says a drummer.

I believe the inspiration for this song came from them watching the 1978 World Cup, which was in Argentina. They were inspired by the Latin Samba rhythms that they heard.

Through my four years of high school I was in Marching Band in the percussion section. Our director and us, often, would discuss how badly we wanted to do that middle part that is counted off by the whistle. Unfortunately it never happened for our band. Thankfully we did get to see a college drum/ensemble from California, named the Santa Clara Vanguard, perform this on a football field. Spectacular.

It is so amazing how different each of Led Zepplins's songs are different from one another. There's no other rock band in history like them!

There’s a great isolated drum track of this on YT. The Purdie Shuffle. Popularized by the legendary Bernard Purdie. Other songs using it around the same time, with Bernard drumming included Home at Last and Babylon Sisters by Steely Dan. Jeff Porcaro also used it on Rosanna by Toto.

The Latin sounding part was because some of the band members were watching the World Cup from that year & it took place in a S. American country. They heard the music being played during the broadcast and took that idea & put it into this song!! Yes, it's a different sound for LZ but it totally works. This was a very popular song, on the radio etc.
