I am nearly 74. I live in Thailand. I have survived prostate cancer and a brain cyst but I hadn't counted on how I might feel at the age I am now. Frankly, I feel awful. I can't walk more than two city blocks without sitting down. I am definitely in bad shape. Come earlier if you can, but if you can't, be sure you are healthy enough to have a good lifestyle.

I know I wish I came earlier. I am 73 now. I do enjoy my life but yes there are things I don’t do. Like go down 300 steps to see a water fall because you have to go back up those 300 steps. But I am ok with that. I do not know what is to old. Only I will decide when I am to old and go back to the states. I stay active have a scooter and travel around also start classes for diving I want to see if I can do it. There is no harm trying things. Mike may be correct 75 maybe too old. Will let you know in two years. But for now I am haveing a hell of a good life and living the dream. Philippines is a wonderful place to live.

Expats should keep in mind one thing about Medicare. If you cancel it and decide you need it later, there is a 10% penalty for each year. So 3 years would be a 30% permanent penalty.

Age is subjective and determined by ones mindset. There are 40 year olds that act and appear as if they're 90. It's a mind meld so to speak, if you act and feel young and healthy, by all means go for the gusto, after all we only get one chance in this life, take advatage of it while you're able.

Hi Mike. I have enjoyed your videos for a few months now. I don't post much. 65 currently and some health problems. I am scrambling to get there. There is a sense of urgency now. I already wish I would have started this 10 years ago. What is rather humorous to me is that the young guys know everything ( cough cough). Thanks you and Janet for all you do.

60, 65, maybe even 70, you're probably okay. After that, you better be fit and healthy otherwise it's probably not going to be what you're hoping for. All that said, money matters. Younger and broke is as bad as old and broke down physically and mentally.

I'm bugging out to the Philippines at 55 (. But as far as the dating scene goes, I don't think my wife would appreciate that much. We are happy together by all means. And income won't be an issue with 2 retirements (401k/SS for both) and the proceeds from the sale of our home, ample funds to enjoy our life there. 😊 we're burned out on the rat race here in the states

I believe you will know because your body is going to tell you if you’re capable. If you’re going to the hospital every couple of months because of problems, probably not a good idea if you’ve taken good care of yourself throughout your years and always stayed active weight training, etc., then you could be ready. Listen to your body.

I am in good health. I am the same size I was when I came out of college. Most importantly I am happy. I don't regret moving from the US to the Philippines, especially the way out country is headed. If you do not like the way your life is headed or are not happy with the US government, by all means check out the Philippines.

Mike, you are living the dream all of us aspire to. I would come early. I’m 53 and my first visit will be next week in Cebu. I’ll be there for 10 days first time with boots on the ground. I plan on establishing a little bit every year by spending a few months in the Philippines. The only thing keeping me back right now is I still have minor children that will graduate high school just as I am turning 62. I got a late start. Perfect timing! Between investments, and Social Security, and good health I will be on my way. Sooner rather than later.

This is a great thought-provoking video. The health and enjoyment benefits of retiring early are real, but if we leave early and decide to draw social security at 62, that's essentially 30% less, every month, that we'll have for the rest of our life. This may become a real issue as time goes by and health problems set in, unless we're fortunate enough to go big when we pass with a sudden cardiac event or stroke that kills us on the spot. I guess we save like mad for now until we decide to pull the trigger and then live with the results...... Individual mileage may vary :)

65 + and the race is done physically and often mentally for a lot of expats. I feel for the Filapina's who are 30 or 40 or 50 dating these guys and watch their life go by for the next 10-15 yrs, with quality of life only getting worse in time. Get to PI about 50-55 is the ideal in my opinion. You will get a quality 10-15 years in and be able to enjoy everything the PI has to offer.

I am an early retiree (retired at 53) but at that time I still had a child that needed to finish high school before I felt able to go. By age 58, she was stable enough that it allowed me to make the move. I have a pension that is large enough that I only use 1/3 of it each month, which has allowed me to build up my savings plus travel when I feel like it. If circumstances would have allowed, I absolutely would have left the US as soon as I could but I am still in good health and expect to have many years to enjoy these years.

Well, I believe in your mid or late 60s and your health is well maintained. For example, At age 65 to 68 can you walk up to 90 minutes non-stop without losing breath or hurt ing outside the norm. Approximately 20, 25 minutes per mile. If You can, I believe your in good shape both inside and out to tackle the Philippines.

Im 60 and my Filipina wife is 59, we are planning on making the move to the Philipines when I am 65/66. I agree 100% with your assessment, and my concern is the health aspect of it as well. We figure that maybe 10 years in the Philipines, then back to the USA. I would make the move at 62, but I wanted to have at least 5K monthly which would be at 65/66 Retirement, at 62 we would have 3k. So time will tell, and I really appreciate your insight.

It’s a balancing thing! You might be healthy, but not enough money so you work a few more years. Then as you’re working your health can change. I planned my retirement. I kept an eye on my ss statement so I could see what I would have coming in and had a workplace account also. What you suggested is a great idea. Take a trip there and do some research on where you would want to live and have around you. Watch some budget videos to get an idea what things cost.

Mike, this is a very good topic. It is a tough balance between having enough money and being able to enjoy life there. While i have been there 3 times ( 2001, 2008, 2012) but my visits were a month or less. My plan to is come ( Bacolod) for 3 months and the rest in FloriDUH. As i get older, i will try to spend longer there and less in US. I plan to sell my house and use some of that money to buy a house there in my wife's name.

Important topic. I agree with you Mike. Age and income are dependent on each persons needs and health. Also agree that a budget of 150K Peso a month or more is reasonable to live in most places in Philippines. More would allow for travel and extras like a car or SUV that typically an older guy would want. Strongly suggest at the very least 1 million Peso cash in the bank back home as a back-up/emergency. In some cases older guys are willing to accept the fact their health is not good so they are willing to risk an earlier death due to the lack of adequate health care. Each of us need to recognize that risk.

I think that’s the wrong question. It doesn’t look at the whole picture. I know a 89 year old, 90 year old, 87 year old who moved to Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines. I think the question is what mental and physical condition are you. I walk 3-4 hours a day and so yoga every day. I’m younger than you and went to Dr. I take no meds, have no medical conditions. I don’t eat meat, sugar, processed carbohydrates, and drink plenty of water. I’ve don’t his for decades. I had extensive solo slow travel trips to SE Asia to 7 countries and I was completely fine. I’m an optimist and very responsible for my life. I stayed in US until my mom passed a week ago. I’m on my way to start my SE Asian slow travel location independent life. It’s not age but what condition is someone physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually. A pessimist wouldn’t do well. A controlling neurotic pessimist person wouldn’t do well. What mental, emotional, psychological, physical condition is someone. That’s the question. My role model is 93, excellent condition, happy, optimist, confident and actively works out every day. My mom passed at 96. My dad is still doing great at 96. I have awesome genes. I don’t drink, smoke, or abuse my body in any way. I ran 15 marathons from 40-45. My life is just beginning. It’s attitude also

Old is a subjective word. It all depends on the health, emotional and financial status of the person. A 65 yr old might be in much better shape physically than a 55 yr old. But I think it's safe to say that if you're in the 70s that's probably too old for most people. I agree with you, it's best to come at a younger age if you are able to and you have the financial means to do it. The older the person gets the tougher it becomes physically and mentally. Great subject, Mike! (And no Browns joke today) 😂

It seems to me that health and healthcare are inextricably linked together so a decision to go would depend on what you might be able to find over in PH for healthcare. I remember you talked about a physical that you had that was about $300 with complete metabolic tests and a CT scan. The CT scan alone here I had was $6872! Of course I'm still working so have insurance so I'm not paying full sticker price, but your full physical was a fraction of what my deductible is! SO if your health is in decline, where are you better off?

Great video Mike but for me I will only visit for three months at a time. I’m 60 but I’ve been retired for 10 years and have lived in the Philippines. But I like home and I want to be closer to my sons. I like to fish and hunt in America. And I live in a rural part in north west America. But who knows I could change my mind. Because I own a big house house in ilocos sur Luzon.

Mike one serious consideration you did not count in your equation was someone already married to a Filipina in their home country, several years younger. I waited till later than I would have if I was single because my SS retirement will go to my wife as survivors benefits. You had to wait because of Covid my point is everyone has to look at what is best for them, but I do agree if your holding off because your afraid to take the jump come on in the water is fine.

You shouldn’t move at 62 unless you have 100k in savings and $2,000 a month in SS. You have to plan on living to 90. You don’t want to be running out of money when you are old. You don’t know how much inflation will affect you and what happens if the US government cuts SS benefits. Can you afford to take a 20% cut in benefits?

In this case age is definitely just a number. Its really going to come down to physical shape. As you know Mike the philippines is not very disability friendly. Moving here early? Well im 45. Been going to and from the philippines since my late 20s to visit my uncle in makati. Met my now wife there. Going back to the younger age..... it's a hard one to call. We have a very successful farm in mindanao but without initial investment from our logging business in ireland it wouldn't have happened. Every situation is going to be just as different as the person getting off each plane. What are you going to do in the philippines at 45 with a small budget??? There's the question

The philippines is dotted with closed down resorts and dive centres and the rotting hulls of dive boats left in their wake while they were lucky to somehow get back home with their tail between their legs. There is no going back in time. Now is all you have. After about 65, physical condition is more important than age.Phillipines will not make a magic change. You will probably live the same life you have chosen at home. The surroundings will be different, though. some ways better, some worse. flexibility counts for a lot.

Assuming one has already decided to retire in the Philippines , I'd say do so at the earliest opportunity providing important things such as finances are in order, yes that amount varies for each individual but we should certainly have a very good idea of just how much (the minimum) we would could live on and still be happy and ideally we would have a little extra at the end of the month we could put away. I would think most of us could live on just our SS benefits and a lot of us would or certainly should have other sources of income such as savings, 401K or other investments we've made during our working years, of course unfortunately there are those that end up with unexpected bills or whatever that wipes out their savings but if you are going to receive at least $1,500 from SS that should be enough to live on, not a great life but shouldn't be that bad and if you think about it, if that's your total income and live in the US, you would certainly struggle even more just to get by.

The 80 year young expat living on $800.00 a month would be an interesting interview. Life is unpredictable...............I think foreigners are more concerned about healthcare living away from the security of the States. If the finances can support how you want to live in another country, why not retire when you can. Is all money kept in the States or land of origin, with easy access when needed. Is SS deposited into your bank in the States or in the Philippines. To decide to move to the Philippines without a good amount of time living there might turn into a disaster. I am sure boredom comes into play after the newness wears off and how to handle that would be concerning. Having other foreigners to relate to helps in many ways and of course proves to be beneficial to everyone.

One thing that I think is really a hollow argument, the US has social services. Yes there is social security and Medicare. Other than those, I hate to tell you, but with the economy and tightening rules, thinking there is a safety net in the US is garbage. If you live in one of the poorer States, money is tight. I cannot even begin to tell you the number of elderly and other disadvantaged folks that are discarded or conveniently found ineligible. The .gov makes the admin application process lengthy and hard to navigate. I am a 40 year Federal employee. To be honest, I do what I can, but in the end it will take all of us to fix this issue here in America. So many homeless, many Veterans, and yes I am well aware of the programs that are touted by the VA. When you have homeless Vets on the waiting list for 2 years or more, I would say the programs are more of a publicity item than real help. You better have a knowledgeable advocate to get you through the process, because otherwise you will just end up with one rejection after another. I love America, but somewhere we seem to have lost our identity/unity.
