people don't understand how traumatizing it can be to feel separate from your own community. really good video with some great points being made here man

He separated himself with albums like Camp and a lot of the stuff he did in his standup. It gave the impression of someone who wanted out of blackness or saw himself above it. It feels like he jumped on the blackitty black train when it became more en vogue.

@@RebelWithoutABoss i get that perspective 100% - i think a lot of it, like charlie kinda delved into, came from his upbringing of feeling ostracized from the community and his struggle to process it. not an excuse for his behavior - i think there's a lot to be said for his history of antiblackness, but i truly don't think it comes from a place of hating his own community or thinking he's above it. and intent only matters up to a certain point - although i think he is genuinely trying to work to undo some damage he's done if you check out what he's up to lately ofc we can't know since we're not him lol but just my interpretation

If you listen to his old interviews or songs he never tried to avoid being black- thats the point- now that hes adopted the accepted aesthetic he looks "blacker" which is asinine. liking white people stuff isnt anti-black.

@@FatCharlie215 In his old interviews he would literally say he didnt want to do certain things or have certain discussions because it was "too much" then tripled down on his asian fetish by pretending to be a asian girl on tumblr. Even when he hopped on the Black train he stole the song from another upcoming black artist and didnt even shout out the black artists like the art directors etc that worked on the note-worthy projects. He has a HUGE one dimensional view for what blackness and it shows in EVERYTHING he does.

The way yall talk about the nerdy black guy xp is so weird to me because i had the adjacent xp, i was a nerdy black girl, and from my pov the rejection from black girls didnt beget the attraction towards non black ppl and thats so easy to see to me. The media obsession and watching mostly white and asian characters kinda did that. He has an asian fetish and its not because of rejection from black girls, even because so are u telling me asians were checking for him when black girls weren't? Lol i just dont see it. I remember hanging out with other black nerds and yeah they didnt consider me as anything but another one of the guys because i was black and nerdy. Weird to see them now saying they thought the same of the non black girls and wanting sympathy lmao. Then again, i remember this but i got over it by the time i was 20, Gambino didn't. A lot of guys didn't, even at 30 i still hear this nonsense lmao.

I don't think FD intends to paint Bino as anti-black, but his critiques have been informal and undercooked. He, Foreign Man and a bunch of breadtube have put out essays exploring "desirability" that I think are a more nuanced, but I haven't seen ones precisely address the Glover/Tyler/Doja/Carmichael phenomena. I'm aligned with your take across both parts of this analysis though that Donald doesn't get a fair shake; and we can't even paint my listed 4 here with one brush

I'm not a huge fan of Donald Glover's music--pretty hit-or-miss tbh--but his experience in blackness is very similar to my own. It's an odd situation to be in, and one that is generally misunderstood by other black folk. I had a fairly stereotypically black upbringing (working class, single mom, lived in the hood, etc.), but I have a _"white"_ speaking voice, and I liked nerdy stuff and dressed differently before that was okay. I always caught flack for how I presented, but it got really bad in high school. I was too rough to bully physically, but the black folk in my area isolated me quite a bit. I've never wanted to be anything other than black and my politic has always been pro-black liberation and progressive, but who I am has never mattered as much as how I present. What's funny is, the whole situation is a feedback loop. If the black folk in your community isolate you, then you seek out other community. If that community isn't black, then they may isolate you more. Same goes with dating. The black girls didn't f**k with me (which, to be clear is perfectly fine, I never took offense to that), so I dated outside the race, which also made them mad. Like, I love my people, and I'll never stop loving them, but that's not okay

I know this focuses on Childish Gambino, but I do feel like his comedy plays a part in why black people don’t wholeheartedly support him. He has a joke about how he would be turned on if a white woman called him the n-word with a hard r.

I just listened to Lithonia about an hour before seeing this video and damn that song is great. The song felt like a song that should be in the 2000s or late 90s rock.

I’m an Asian woman who has always loved Gambino’s output - though I acknowledge that some of his bars were launched at me in some gross ways through early adulthood 😂 (real interesting to sit in a room and have everyone quiet until “Are there Asian girls here? Minority report!” drops and everyone got to point at me lol) I didn’t relate to Gambino because he was dorky, I related because he really openly talked about not having a community that accepted him - as the only Asian girl in rural Midwest America, that spoke to me. I can see how it spoke to other people as well, but not the community his was expected to be courting. Gonna check out part 2 to see what left turn this all takes lol

Me as an Asian who is not accepted by Asians either. I always thought Bino had a point. I never gave a shit about the social politics surrounding his blackness

Love FD but the man still has a strong "not black enough" anti-blackness streak about him. Not just him a lot of black nerd who grow up end up joining the chorus who mocked them growing up to validate the blackness that was questioned in their youth. The black diaspora need understand that dissing a black person just being different and not performing to expectations is still anti-blackness. Doesn't mean we can't criticise our worst elements just not in the lens of "they not black" even if "they not like us".

As opposed to the bars that some other rappers have not just degrading women but outright being malicious towards them, I’ve always found it interesting that Gambino gets charged with this “doesn’t like black women” line. The dude is a backpacker with a lot of musical range. Early career gambino is a lot like logic but what distinguishes him is connection to the culture, blackness, art. That’s why we have Because the Internet or Awaken my Love or even songs like Sober, a song in 2014 with a music video with a black woman.
