I think the stones aren't as much for "cooling" your whisky as much as it is for keeping your spirit cool. I personally like my whisky cold, so the stones fresh out of the freezer (as is my whisky) will keep my whisky cooler longer than ice will.

Somebody told me that whiskey stones are not for chilling your drink they are actually meant to KEEP your drink cold. They're meant for drinks that are already cold, say you popped your bottle in the freezer well pour a glass and throw some frozen stones in it and it will stay cold longer. I dont know if it's true however

Found my way here via the Vault... I'm totally with you on this one. In the winter I don't use my stones (I have stainless ones) but in the summer it can still be 85F when I want to have a drink on the porch after dinner. Whisky really goes downhill for me above ~70F and the stones are ideal for keeping it in the happy zone on hot nights.

Still catching up Have tried various Regular ice - great but dilutes too much for me) Huge large cube - to chill fast from surface area then pour off to reduce water dilution... a bit Stones - ok to cool, but found they did little Plastic (like mini freezer blocks) ok but no - just no Metal Cubes - should be same as stones - but seriously feel them when they come out of freezer - heck of a lot colder to touch and do cool the drink down more Only thing with the stones is - Well it is Scotch on the Rocks 😀 Now when it comes to Vodka (which personally I love to keep in the freezer - TRY IT!) now these stones and cubes help keep it down there

A big thing to is that once the ice cubes are melted the temperature starts to drop. The stones stay at a cooler temp and for a longer period of time. Plus they don't water down ur tasty beverage. You should have waited about 15 min after the ice melted, then check the temp of both glasses.

the thing no one mentions about these is that they would actually be very effective at _heating_ things instead of cooling, for things like teas or soups, all the disadvantages the stones have in cooling would turn into advantages when heating

I think this is all a preference thing. I honestly prefer my whisky straight because I don't like when it's dilluted, I got the stones as a gift recently and I actually prefer them because it cools it down a little bit, but I'd rather drink luke warm straight whiskey over watered down on the rocks.

I'm new to whiskey n sadly tend to end up disagreeing with most whiskey drinkers. Heard JD is considered one of the worst, but I always liked it, n I tend to like my whiskey chilled (I don't leave it in the fridge or anything, but I do like to let the ice cool it down) If these cubes only cool it down to celler cold, then doesn't sound worth it to me

I think they would be useful or are useful.whiskey on the rocks eventually changes taste wise over time, if that’s how you like yours then by all means.maybe you don’t want the change in taste that comes with ice ( which can definitely be drastic depending on the amount of ice you add,water used,etc.) but if you use the stones then the change in taste isn’t going to go very far or be that much just slightly.it’s all about what you prefer in the end but I normally drink my whiskey neat

Good video. I have never used the "stones", they sell stainless steel cubes around my parts. But never bought them. Interesting test though. Reminds me of people who recycle their cooling water in a 55 gallon drum and use a pond pump to circulate water through their condenser. After 5-6 hours of distilling, the water temp climbs to 100f. Some would put in 1 gallon frozen jugs of water to lower then cooling water temp. But it just barely lowers the temp due to the water layer inside the jug. Somewhere on HD forums someone filled the jug with SAND, then put water in it, and then froze it. The frozen sand jugs cooled down the cooling water much more efficiently.

the amount of energy loss to cool 1 kg of water by 1degree kelvin is 4800 joules. the amount of energy reequired to turn 1kg ice at 273k to liquid at 274k is 334000 joules. so a 1:1 ratio of ice to water would cool boiling water by 70 degrees kelvin, or just above room temperature. 1:1 rock however, would only cool it until the objects met equilibrium, or 255k rock plus 370k water would result in 60k in cooling. so not bad, until you realise that the water and ice have to reach equilibrium as well, to where the water no longer has any energy to give before it begins losing energy for phase change to ice. so, the ice at 255k won't even stop at 70k cooling, that's just the energy from phase change, the water will still meet in the middle before the energy from phase change will matter, so it's more like, 70k cooling from phase change, plus 60k from temperature difference. of course the water won't go from 370k to 240k, but once it reaches 274k, there will still be some ice left, keeping the drink cool, even with ambient energy from the environment heating it up. so with ice, you can have more liquid in the drink and still make it cool, and it will also keep it cool for longer. the only difference will be that the ice won't freeze the liquid around it, unless the ice is very cold when you put it in the glass. ice just wins with phase change lb for lb. but if you use enough rocks, (or metal is a better conductor) then it will still be fine. you just have to use way more rocks.

Dave Arnolds talks "ice science" in one chapter of his book "Liquid Intelligence" and even though it sounds like a dumb topic on the surface, when you dive into it it's completely mind blowing. Long story short, ice is a miracle and can't be matched in cooling power. Yes whisky stones work but the laws of physics prevent them from being more than a fraction as efficient as ice. Im not gonna write every detail so if anyone's interested you can buy yourself the book and trust me when I say it's worth it.

Am I the only one who dislike drinking my spirits "on the rocks"? I personally feel that too much of the aroma gets lost if the spirits are enjoyed too cold... Ice, rocks, spirits straight from the freezer?... No thanks :) By the way, have any of you ever tried drinking the watery leftovers (ex. ice cubes) in the bottom of the glass? It's foul... I wouldn't put something that like that in my spirits... Or do you prep the water prior to freezing in some way that helps with the taste?
@StillIt
@StillIt 6 жыл бұрын
+Michas Richter I think perhaps you miss understood how I like it. I dig these stones exactly because they don't chill the whisky too much. Just enough to go from "ah this whisky is hot" to "room temp". So if I had a nice spirits cupbourd I would just drink it neat. In winter I do just drink it neat and in chilled. So in other words these stones basically let me drink my whisky "neat" when the bottle itself is too hot. And yeah if I am doing ice for cocktails etc I make my own from filtered water and often do the insulated, slow freeze, top down thing haha.

Because then you would have cold whisky. Fine if it's what you are after. But not what I want.

But you deleted your whiskey with ice. If you were drinking a 90 proof now where you at with ice 70 proof. Stones still at 90

Wait...So you the stones aren't refrigerated? Frozen water versus room temperature rock...Why is this even a question?!

No they are frozen, well, not frozen. But in the freezer.

You can immediately see that the actual ice cubes are way way better. Because as soon as you put them in the glass, condensation on that outside of the glass started, which attributes to the huge temperature difference. A testament to how cold it got. But with the stainless steel ice cubes that never happened.

the stones need to be placed in the freezer to get an effect from using them.

Yea I've not tried the ones that my son got for me, but they're much larger than those. I have been looking at some that are made of stainless steel and are bullet shaped kinda different but it's kinda like you said everyone has their own preference for what they like.

Wouldnt metal work better?
@StillIt
@StillIt 6 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of metal "whisky stones" out there. At a guess, they do likely have a greater thermal mass. But they conduct a lot better. So the heat transfer will happen quickly . . . .. at the end of the day . . .. whatever works for you man. Drink your whisky your way! :)
