In this sponsored post, Mike from TopDaddies meets up with the experts at Kal Tire to find out how winter tires perform compared to all-seasons in a variety of tests. Driving on a professional course under the supervision of professional drivers, Mike got to test out different tires in snow conditions. Do not attempt. ABOUT THE KAL TIRE TESTS
Kal Tire did some testing and discovered that a worn five-star premium tire can outperform a new 3-season tire in certain conditions. On an icy road at 30 kilometres per hour, the 75 per cent worn five-star premium winter tire stopped in 29.7 metres; 2.6 m sooner than the new 3-season, which stopped at 32.3 m. The 75 per cent worn premium winter tire held a corner 4.3 per cent better than the new 3-season tire. The premium winter tire outperformed the three-star economy winter tire in all tests over all stages of wear. In the ice braking test, the 75 per cent worn premium winter tire stopped in 29.7 m; the 75 per cent worn economy winter tire stopped in 32.5 m. Braking performance declines significantly between 50 and 75 per cent wear. When the premium winter tire went from 50 to 75 per cent worn, it took an extra 3.1 m to brake on ice. The economy winter tire took an extra 4.8 m. When the premium tire went from 50 to 75 per cent worn, it took an extra 4.4 m to brake on snow. The economy winter tire took an extra 4.3 m to stop. For more details on these tests, visit the Kal Tire website.

So many people are driving over 6 years old winter or summer tires. New all season tires outperform any nearly ten years old winter tires. Even you have only 25% wear in your tires they can still suck. Look the DATE your tires are manufactured. Its in form week + year. For example my under one years old all-season tires are manufacturred in 4021

Lateral grip testing looked all the same to me except the 75% worn All-season tires.

I highly recommend folks get winter tires if live/drive somewhere that has winter conditions on a regular basis !! Re: this video, is it just me or did the all seasons actually stop shorter than the 75% winters, but still a bit longer than the new winters ? at the 4:00 min mark ? IT's not an awesome set up, but I appreciate them showing the difference and getting the general message across

The data seemed ok, but the live test is really poor for comparisons, that much snow your slowed down by the volume of snow the car has to move through more than the difference in tires

So, premium winter worn in 75% from 30kmph stops better on ice (29m) than on snow ? (31m) what a bs!

Fit new winter tyres ( best you can afford , your life is worth it , isn't it ) for winter, run all year through summer (when you don't need good tread )then fit new ones in time for next winter 15000-20000 miles , job done . I have done this for the last 15 or so years , works great .

@Jake Werecat I live in rural Scotland going up and down wet and snowy farm roads . Half worn-out winter tyres in summer months work just fine . Changing to summer tyres for just a few months would give me little to no advantage . I am not a boy-racer so maximum grip on smooth dry fast roads might be for the boy racer? Having brand new winter tyres in time for winter is just FAB ! Swapping over summer/ winter just gives you half worn-out tyres the next winter which is worse than half as good , or almost completely useless if you try to stretch them out over 3 winters. I know i used to do that ! Wintre tyres fresh every winter just works best for me .

Here in New Hampshire (about 4 hour drive from Montreal) the General Altimax Arctic Winter tires are the best cost effective solution to safe Winter driving..period. See for yourself....go to Tire Rack (or anywhere you like) price the others and compare their performance vs their cost. Living in northern New England over the years you quickly find the best Winter tire for the least cost..

Those are a good bang for the buck. We've had many sets of General Altimax Arctic on several of our cars. But the Yokohama Ice Guard perform slightly better on ice (same on snow). However, we've owned a couple of sets of Blizzak and our current WS80 on our Forester XT are even better on ice than the Yokohama (similar with snow). Regardless, the General still perform better in winter than any of our all-season tires - but for $10-15 more each the Yokohama made more sense for us on our other 3 cars. The Yokahama also don't wear out as fast as the Blizzak did on my STi and Forester XT. I forgot to mention, we have Continental Extreme Winter on my daughter's Jeep Compass, and they just might be as good on ice as the Blizzak WS80 but for a lot less, but they have a soft sidewall with slow steering response and I won't use them on my performance cars like WRX or Forester XT.

You should really use the same car to test it. This data is not accurate. Doing such experiment is tedious but if you wanna the audiences to be convinced, it is necessary to follow the right procedures. Different cars have different break pads, some worn out, some don't, etc. It is hard to tell the accuracy of the test.

this test might be accurate if you were driving on unplowed mountain roads but in the real world I don't think it has any value. the real test will be bringing the tires down to -10 or 15 Celsius and seeing how well they perform when it hard packed snow surface

Yes but it still stop and enough. Use tires till the last drop. Safe the planet and reduce garbage by buying good tires that last well till its last drop like michelin.

These tests are not very useful. The most useful is dry/wet braking. They don't do it because the all seasons/summers will outperform the winters in mild conditions.
