Are you a fidget? Focus more, lose weight?
Fidgeting has now been promoted as a new way to focus more, lose help with ADHD and lose weight? Are you serious?
This is based on work by Julie Schweitzer of the MIND institute at the University of California, Davis.
Here is what they did,
They put an angle bracelet on children whilst they performed a difficult mental task. They found that for the children with ADHD their movement was more intense and this correlated with them getting the right answer.
This finding is aligned with the belief that fidgeting helps kids with ADHD to compensate for low arousal levels and therefore pay more attention.
If you are thinking of getting your child a fidget spinner to help them concentrate, think again, the fidgeting comes from the child and not an external source which Julie feels would actually be a distraction.
There was found to be a correlation between how often people's thoughts wander and how often they fidgeted.
It seems that mental and physical fidgeting were connected.
Fidgeting could be a physical motion that helps our mind to stay focused.
James Farley and his colleagues at the University of Alberta in Canada filmed 21 students as they watched a 40 min video of a lecture.
They then recorded every 5 mins if they had been daydreaming or paying attention.
As you may guess the attention started to wander more as time went on, as well as daydreaming.
Now for weight loss.
In 1999 researchers at the Mayo clinic in Minnesota asked volunteers to eat an extra 1000 calories per day for 8 weeks.
Their weight and exercise were monitored throughout this time.
The ones that kept the weight off seemed to be due to the fact that they were fidgeting.
It was used as an automatic weight management strategy.
The most fidgety can burn 800 or more calories per day.
Take home message is ditch the fidget spinners, tap your feet, jiggle your legs. Drum your fingers on the table to help your brain focus and lose weight.

Ive heard that fidgeting leads to more weight loss before as its causes more NEAT (non exercise activity thermogenesis)
