For me, story is king in my jrpgs, so, I have to recommend the Legend of heroes series, I love world building and character development, if you want to start from the "beginning" the Trails on the sky trilogy is your path, but you can also start with the Trails of Cold Steel quadrilogy as I did. Also, Fire Emblem 3 Houses was my 1st strategy jrpg too, and I loved it, such an amazing game, very recommended to anyone who has a Switch.

Just picked up Ni No Kuni Wrath of the White Witch because I love the art style. Not sure it qualifies as a JRPG, but for a beginner I recommend Child of Light. Mechanics are easy to learn, story and characters are well written, and I just think it’s a wonderful gem of a game.

I have to say that if you have the ability Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is a great jrpg for beginners. The turn based combat requires actions no matter whose turn it is and the story is easy to follow and interesting.

I'm glad you mentioned Ni No Kuni 2, as I agree. The complaints over the three system types was ridiculous. It was it's Suikdoen style elements that drew me too it. That's why I recommend the first Suikoden as a starting point. It's short compared to games nowadays, which it important to see if you like it. But it has a great story, amazing music, home base and collection of 108 characters that are optional, but so important to the story and becoming more powerful. Turned based battles with no grinding needed, war battles in form of paper rock scissors, and one on one duels in climatic situations just adds to it. And if you like that game, you can load your data into the second one for a longer and more polished experience with additional content that many say is the best jrpg ever. It's a great fast paced game and in my opinion Suikoden is the best jrpg series around.
@MissBubbles3 жыл бұрын
I see many telling me about this game and I never heard of it before? Does it combine many elements into the game to make it more fun? Where can I play it? Thank you so much for explaining more about it I am really interested now!
@kcmac92983 жыл бұрын
@@MissBubbles You are welcome. If you have a ps3 and ps network is still up, you can get suikoden 1-4 on there. Otherwise emulators work great for first two games as they were ps1 games. 3,4, tactics, and 5 were all ps2 games. Emulation is getting better but without PSN for ps3, you will most likely need a hardcopy. And, yep, the different elements come in throughout the games and are different in each game. It's basically game of thrones meets Pokémon without any crappy endings. Adding and recruiting more people add things like soldiers, shops, mini games, baths, etc to your headquarters when you get it. Suikoden 1 and 2 are very simimilar, suikoden 3 has multiple main characters with there own chapters then come together at end, 4 and tactics go together and involve mostly sea travel, and 5 is a longer version of first 2 with skill system that is added from 3rd one. War battles change from paper rock scissors, to tactical, to resl time throughout series. The 1 in 1 battles kept getting better as well. They all take place in same world as well. Hope that helps.
@kcmac92983 жыл бұрын
@@MissBubbles I'll also add that Konami buried this series. However, the creators of the series have reformed under their own studio and are working on a series just like Suikoden called Eiyuden Chronicles that will be coming out in 2023 with a companion game in 2022. They are very community active and have a big page on discord. The Kickstarter for the game shattered rpg records and the some. So if you like Suikoden this will give you something to look forward to in the future.

I have only played FF9 on this list surprisingly. I wasnt sure about this at first, but I'll say Final fantasy Tactics. There are some unforgiving spots, and it's as easy to make a team that doesn't work as it does. But there are ways to make the game very easy early on. The mechanics are broken down in a simple way too. E.G. armor just adds HP, rather then complicated defense and resistance stats that require...math...lol Great video guys, very entertaining.

Lots of interesting titles across the two videos! I know it's an older game but Chrono Trigger is probably my number 1 beginner friendly jrpg. It has amazing music, very fun and quick combat and it's not even very long despite how much content it has packed in. a lot of old games will have mechanics or aspects that are just not fun in todays day and age but Chrono Trigger manages to sidestep all that and be fairly timeless. Also for those who like a bit more action in their JRPG I would say Ys 8 Lacrimosa of dana would be a good choice. Also has great music and quick action combat, it's in a bit of a sweet spot of clocking in at 30-60 hours depending on how completionist heavy you want to go. Granted I may be biased but I still think a beginner jrpg player would enjoy it. Loved the video and I hope you keep up the good work!

I am surprised y'all are saying to try Chrono!! I am so excited now. I keep hearing it is super difficult which scares me away. @@MissBubbles Oh I didn't think about how the map could probably be frustrating but you make a great point. It's not mandatory to complete (in the sense that I don't remember any like.. progression being tied to how much of the map you have cleared) so for the most part you can ignore it? So far I've failed to get my nephews and nieces interested at all, which is a pity because I really do think they have some of the best stories, characters and music of any genre. @@MissBubbles I recommend Cyrus as a starter! He has a super useful skill that allows you to see one of every enemy's weaknesses which can really give you an advantage in battle. He's also the strongest magical attacker in the game, and gains an ability that lets you lessen the amount of enemy encounters. Just don't abuse it and lessen the enemy encounters too much, or you may struggle in battles. If you want to play as a female character, I'd recommend Ophilia. She's the best healer in the game and is located next to Cyrus, so you can pick him up right away :) I never had to grind a single time and I 100% completed the game, but you're always free to grind if you want an extra boost in power to help with battles! The gameplay is amazing and the storytelling of 8 smaller stories, each with their own twists and turns was very unique and refreshing. If you pay attention though, you may see that all stories actually connect in subtle ways :)

I heard Ophelia is soooo annoying with her "your excellency lines" lmao. As for Cyrus, I was seriously considering him but worried that he story won't be that awesome. What about Therion and the Huntress? Are they too much for a beginner?
@Flareboxx3 жыл бұрын
@@MissBubbles Haha the only person I've heard that from was Dunkey. I don't think she even says that line after chapter 1. Ophilia never annoyed me personally, if Dunkey is the person you also heard that from, I think he was just trying to be funny :) Therion is a great choice because he can open up all the locked chests, and can steal from people. However, he is one of the weaker fighters in battle. Certainly not the worst, but I'd probably rank him the 6th best in battles out of the 8 characters. H'annit is great, and it's so much fun capturing beasts to use later. However, I personally found Olberic to be the stronger physical fighter and I've definitely heard more complaints about H'annit's speech being annoying because she speaks like she's in a Shakespearean play haha. Cyrus is definitely the most beginner friendly, and I liked his story! You would still experience all 8 stories in a single playthrough too, but your main character stays in your party until you finish their 4 chapters, and I found him to be the most useful in battles .But part of the fun is making that choice for yourself!

My recommendation would be Threads of Fate AKA Dewprism in Japan, tho it is a bit hard to get since it is a PS1 game and the easiest way to get it is on PS3, PSP and PSVita, it is an action RPG with two protagonists, an amnesiac boy that wields a kind of sword-axe and can transform into some of the enemies and a spoiled princess that wields hoops as weapons and also can use magic, the story is mostly lighthearted and changes a bit depending on who you choose and to get the full ending you need to clear the game as both; the gameplay is fairly simple and you level up your HP and abilities separately.

@@MissBubbles Go with Greatswords path for the hero and on the grid head straight for Helicopter which can be achieved almost right away. That skill will carry you for a big part of the game until you can unlock Unbridled Blade. In a game like DQ11 getting a level up or two can drastically mean the difference between cheesing a boss and struggling. So if you find yourself not just plowing through things, take a moment to grind a little bit from the regular enemies. Hero should be good enough to one-shot any of the regular enemies you come across. If it's taking more than one turn, it's a pretty good sign to grab a few more levels.

I would definitely not add Three Houses to the list. Yes it’s a lot easier than other FE games it still has a ton going on and the amount of choices might throw newcomers off. Also I say Final Fantasy X would be a better choice than IX. The combat being completely turned based gives you an easier time figuring out what the spells and skills do and what not whereas IX has the atb which is a little more involved and if it’s your first rpg or first FF it might be overwhelming fighting if you don’t know what things do in combat and without the time to properly read it will turn some people away imo

I played it again recently and I respectfully disagree about FFIX as a beginner friendly JRPG. The story's poorly written, poorly paced and really starts to feel like it's dragging on about halfway through. Plus, if you actually want to engage properly with the combat it's slow as hell. Those loading screens are ridiculous. It's one of the games I now think about when someone describes JRPGs as boring and I'd honestly consider it one of the weakest entries in the series. For a beginner-friendly Final Fantasy, I'd recommend X, or maybe even VI if you didn't mind that oldschool presentation. In general, I'd really recommend Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Its premise is that an ex-yakuza member grew up playing dragon quest and now every street fight he's involved in is turn-based in his head. They really use that setup and their selfawareness about the genre to hilarious effect.
