If I were to look at music as a "language" and level as "fluency". I'm probably about an 8-10 year old. Finger picking is my strength. I know music theory, I started with drums, but timing still needs calibration. I know the CAGED but not as fluent as I like to be. I know some but note all the notes names. I can play basic cords on most any song by following the bass line to find the key and go from there. Pick control, scales, and consistency is the things I need to work on most.

Something I read a while ago I found really useful in demystifying music theory. It was something along the lines of "music is what we perform: music theory is simply the language we use to explain to others what we're doing when we perform and how to perform it themselves." "It's in 4/4." "It's in G." "G-major or G-minor?" "It's a 1-4-5" chord progression." "A V7 chord wants to resolve to I." "A minor chord has a flatted 3rd." "A pentatonic scale has no semitones." These are all examples (of varying abstruseness) of music theory - the language of instruction in music. In other words, music theory isn't something you learn _after_ you begin playing. It's the very medium via which you learn to play. 🙂

Hmm, beginner & intermediate for 46 years! New world record! Began playing in 1978... then pretty much quit as I raised my kids and sold everything. (No time working so much). Now that they are grown, a beginner again! It's like I was in a time warp, and suddenly I buy a guitar again and have access to awesome teachers like you. @16:58 "the older I get the more I have fun playing the instrument I've been blessed with" I second that statement brother ~ Thank you and God bless you

I always believed that when they say 10 mins, they feel that you'll see small improvements quickly that will have you playing for hours without even thinking of it. Or maybe not, and they're just full of it trying to make a buck. LOL

The way that I usually hear the 5-10 minutes a day for practice, tends to be either for those with a time crunch (some that you can learn to play, not necessarily get good); or for those who are in a slump-because at least you’re still playing. It’s about baby steps to self-discipline. Quite frankly, it’s how started my journey to relearning how to play after 25 years, where my should be my best supporter was the enemy in the same home... I played in spite of her... and found a way to beat those odds. Still... I’m probably just a long time beginner, whether I cross the threshold or not, I’m practicing for intermediate some day. Thank you.

In my experience as an intermediate, I think so much of moving out of long term beginner is also playing with other guitar players/musicians live in the room. I've learned more by just absorbing from better players than anything else. Listen to the instruments around you, find where you fit in, ask questions, be humble and don't compare yourself to others and be okay with making mistakes so long as you're trying. The technique is just about discipline and practice. Fwiw, I find it helps me to focus on trying to be a little better every day. You don't have to be Picasso to enjoy painting, and you don't have to be Jimmy Page to derive value and meaning from playing the guitar. Thanks for the content. Keep playing, everybody.

I'm a long time beginner. I started at about 57, I'm 63 now. I was progressing slowly but surely. But the last couple of years have brought some health struggles. Hopefully in a few months I'll be able to take it up again. I've been fascinated by the guitar since the 70's and totally enjoy watching a good guitarist.

I step back and forth over the line of beginner and intermediate. It can be very frustrating when out of practice and can't play like you used to. I did not know the 12 bar blues . Once I got that I really progressed quick. I have been on stage many times playing lead and singing . I do not believe I am a pro but getting there . Covid kind of killed it for a lot of folks playing out .

Well, I'm glad I was able to get through that checklist unscathed as an intermediate player. But I still learn from your videos and enjoy watching all of them. For example, seeing little chords (diads and triads) all over the fretboard is golden when playing both lead and rhythm, as well as connecting the two. Thanks, Rusty. These are all great points.

I'm have some attributes of both of your lists, but one of my biggest areas of struggle, which I don't think you mentioned, is being able to hear the chord changes when playing with backing tracks. In order to target notes and be deliberate on where you want to end or start a riff hearing that chord change is critical I would think.

Excellent topic! One thing I learned over the years is not to be afraid of learning genre that you don't normally listen to. When I was invited to play with different people in different places, i quickly realized i had to learn what they played so I could be included again whenever they played again. Wow, Rusty! I considered myself an intermediate guitarist, but now I realize I'm more advanced than I thought! I play my guitar daily, even if just for a few minutes (hours, if I can), to make music. I make my own sound through technique. I have good rhythm, ppl have always said I have "natural" rhythm. I play notes with feeling. I've learned a LOT of theory from YT videos, more than I ever learned before. (I even took a course in college!) I don't know a lot of scales or modes, don't care. I know pentatonic shapes, the Major & minor scales, how to make my own chords, triads, etc. I'm learning the notes all over the fretboard. I know how to easily figure them out, but I don't always know them instantly. But, I'm getting there! I truly get enjoyment from playing. I can make music for hours, just "fooling around" sometimes, not even playing "real songs " I'm learning a repetior of songs to play to entertain people. I've written songs in my younger years, I plan to write better ones now. I'm learning what it takes to make a song really good. Excellent guidance from you! Thanks for everything you do! 👍 👌 🤪

Hi Rusty. I started at a late age because My focus as a youth was erratic, and I wanted to learn correctly as a discipline. KZbin has been a positive influence because I can learn at my own speed and review lessons at my convenience. I bought a pedal that has a looper and drum beats, and this is a valuable tool for timing and rhythmic feel. I play music that does not require lots of speed or endurance, and I enjoy playing scales and patterns to warm up and create flexibility in my fingers. My dad played till he was in his late 80's. Very good points Rusty!! I think that a problem that prevents us from advancing is the overinformation that exists today on the Internet and the lack of a structured program to advance progressively, we bite here and there and we do not focus and deepen. I think that composing our own riffs/songs/solos etc. also makes a lot of progress. Playing with friends and jamming/improvising also helps a lot. I consider myself an intermediate player but I have so much stuff to learn and improve. Thanks a lot my friend!

Hi there Rusty....I'm still definitely a longtime beginner...no question about it! But, I have learned a LOT from you and I'm getting better, little by little. My improvising is much better now than 18 months ago, and my technique is much better too, which opens many doors for me. I'm learning, I'm having fun and enjoying the journey as well. Every day I pick up the instrument, I learn a little more, I get a little better, and I have fun. There's no downside to this :)

I think I've crossed the line into intermediate. Use to play acoustic and was progressing quite well. We then were losing our only bass player for all the groups at church. So I bought a bass and became the bass player. Occasionally now I also play electric in one group. I think playing guitar made me a better bass player but now getting back to guitar more, playing bass has made me a better guitar player. Sometimes struggle what to practice to keep moving forward. Appreciate your videos.

Thank you for your undying support for us long time mediocre players. Unfortunately I am one of those 50 something years players who just can’t seem to get over the hump. At 71 I still try to pick up the guitar everyday if possible. I love playing guitar. I keep asking myself is it time to just hang it up. But in reality I probably never will. Somehow if I keep picking it up and playing it’s going to come to me through osmosis. And like magic I am going to be able to play great solos. NOT. I still hope that I will buckle down and learn what I need to know to become a proficient guitar player.

I'd say the things that got me to intermediate level are #1 I had all my guitars professionally set up. #2. Watching lessons like yours #3 . Learning about Triads which led into 3rds 4ths etc. #4. For rythm has to be finding backing tracks that show the cord progressions ! This helped me immensely. #5. Getting to the point where it's not practice anymore I actually look forward to playing every night now! Good luck all.

At 64, I've been a long-time beginner, since I was 8-9 years old. 😱. That said, I understand a reasonable amount of theory. 😊 I've been a hard-hitting acoustic player forever and spent 10 years playing in a church band. I'm trying to move to electric and, well it's a completely different instrument. My son has a music degree in performance jazz (bass guitar). He can play anything and he makes my guitar sing. He also plays keyboard at a high level. You would think having a professional musician in the house would be a great help. It has helped my theory a lot, but its also intimating. Rusty, I have learnt a lot watching both of your channels, and I have shown some of your videos to my son. Thank you and onwards to 100,000 Subs. 😊 - Rod

For years I've been hitting wrong strings!!!! Problem solved! I practiced the 5 pentatonic positions only on the on the 12 and above frets, for seven days! Amazing! It made my pick travel a lot smaller! Why haven't teachers discovered that? Thanks Rusty! Smaller frets really tightens up your picking and fingering!

I was worried that was going to be me, but it's not. While I spent a lot of years not really improving and sometimes even regressing due to lack of practice. I have made a lit of progress in recent years. I was in the intermediate phase for a long time. I might be able to consider myself advanced at this point although I feel like there are some fairly basic ideas that I haven't fully incorporated yet. It's hard to judge yourself accurately. I just discovered your channel and I'm impressed with what I've seen so far. Don't be surprised if you see me commenting on older videos.

Turn off the recorder and delude myself. 2. Give up and never play again 3. Be honest with myself and seek to improve. I choose option 3. Man I got a ways to go!!!!

Thanks Rusty! So glad I found both your channels. These are great definitions, they really help to judge where a person is in their playing. I think I’ve hovered at low intermediate for a long time, and channels like yours are helping me change that. I’ve played in our church worship band for a long time, but didn’t practice much at home. I’m really working on stepping up my game, practicing daily, learning the fretboard and the notes of the chords. What game changers learning those two things are! Could you do a video on making a lick? I tend to just run through the scale, can’t seem to really come up with something that goes beyond that. Thanks for your channel!

I’d call myself a lazy intermediate. I know the fretboard & chords in different positions, but I tend to play the same patterns. I just don’t work at it enough. I’m going on 72 now & just enjoy playing with backing tracks. I’m capable of more, I just don’t have the drive. I play 2-3 times a week, 30 minutes to an hour each time & enjoy it. I wish I had known what I know now 25-30 years ago ! I went thru the gear buying phase, still own more guitars than I need, but I think I’m over that now. Thanks for sharing your tips ! I’m really enjoying Bible Study now. I know you can relate to that !

It took me some time to know my role with the guitar. I’m blessed to have no endpoint. So much about my being in acceptance of my current level, is that now I can actually hear how to build a solid foundation. A few weeks back you gave us a one chord vamp for practice. If I cannot do it with one chord, how will I even hear progressions. A step at a time.

Great stuff Rusty, you have a new subscriber ! I am certainly a loooong time beginner. After a long 30- year plus layoff, i recently got back into playing again. I love the instrument. Life just got in the way. So after dusting off the rust , I retaught myself the basic chords and developed the callouses again. i hired an instructor, and basically, we are stripping away the bad habits learned as a teen. I have a long way to go, but the journey has been fun. Thanks to your information and my instructor, maybe this time next year i can get to that intermediate stage🎉

A friend of mine recommended this channel, this is the first video I've watched, and I am hooked already. And, I am so relieved! I thought I was a long-time beginner, but your checklist best describes me as intermediate. I have good rythm, I can sing and play, I know the low E and A string very well, I understand 1-4-5 theory, I can play major and minor scales, and I know the two-over-two-up method of finding the octave. I can do some vibrato and string bending, and I can mimic a few solos Whew! But I still regard myself as a shitty guitar player. Improvising still eludes me. Perhaps because I have one persistent "longtime beginner" trait: I am lazy.

I identified with this as an older long timer. I know theory pretty well and work on memorizing note locations every day, but still need to look at tab or chord charts. If you asked me to play "Happy Birthday" by ear I could not do it. I also can't identify changing chords and hit the right notes, although I know the layout of the Pentatonic scales pretty well.

It comes down to putting in the practice - like with anything you have to master. I have been playing casually since I was 13 when I got my first guitar. I studied music theory, but I have probably a thousand hours tops on the instrument itself. That makes me a solid beginner. You have to put about 10k hours into playing before you can even come close to saying you have mastered the instrument. Contrast that with my best friend who, after I taught him a single lick, spent 10 hours a day playing for 6 months. He ended up joining a band and is a studio musician now. So yeah - it's all about the time you put in.

Well Rusty I don't spend a lot of money on equipment or pedals & such. I'm retired but, I do fit most of all you have pointed out. I play along with songs on Siriusxm and you tube. I have been playing for 5 years now but can't seem to learn ruffs that stay with me. I don't get enough time to practice like I should and, I know, practice, practice, practice❗I am learning the notes on the fret board, pentatonic scales and learning triads. Learning how to move them up and down the fret board is bogging me down. I don't know what the chords they are. I have charts that have all the different notes on it but I don't know what fret they are on. It doesn't tell me, unless I'm reading it wrong. I play in church and I must say I am getting much better but, If someone asked me to play something I wouldn't be able to do it. I don't know anything. I feel defeated but, I'm not giving up. Thanks for all your great lessons. I've learned quite a bit from watching your KZbin vids.

Appreciate your channel and have learned a lot. Would love a video on hearing the chord changes while singing and playing simultaneously, and combining little pentatonic riffs and fills with the chords as part of the rhythm. Combining these techniques like Hendrix, etc. Great channel!

And no I didn't learn the notes but now I am because I found you. No I never knew theory because no one ever taught me. Except you. There's one other guy attempt to do what you do. I've been playing on some level for 30 years, and up until about 3-4 years ago (when I started learning theory) I always said, "No, I'm not a musician or a guitar player, rather I'm a guy who can play a lot of songs on guitar" I've gotten a lot better, and I know stuff, but I can't really applya lot of it well yet... this is because I spend more time watching videos than playing the damn guitar and practicing specific things. But at least I know what I don't know, and understand all the basics of music theory and chord/scale construction.

Playing guitar comes down to one major thing: Determination to play the guitar. To get better at guitar quickly.......learn to play something today that you didn't know yesterday. If you do that every day for a month, you will look back and see progress, and if you continue playing what you already know you will see little progress.

I call myself a 'professional beginner'. I've been a beginner so long I'm actually pretty good at sounding better than I am. I can record and sing original songs using the cowboy chords and a few bare chords on the neck. Hammer-on's and pull-offs on the open chords are something else I am pretty good at. I know one scale and can't solo! I'm 61 years old and got my first guitar when I was 8 years old!

I'm working on that stuff you mention, after noodling for years, particularly learning the notes, it's not easy but it's something you need to move forward, i think. I reckon John Frusciante from the Chili's is a good player to copy and analyse, but each to their own, it's interesting when you learn more and it hits you 'Oh that's why they're doing that' , It generally fits around the theory.

Good info and advice. I consider myself an intermediate player. I've been playing for over 30 years. I'm 54, and have had big gaps of several months to years not playing for having children and other important life situations. Never had a lesson. I would recommend if a new player has the means to def. get some real lessons if possible. I did have a good friend show me chords and licks , etc. I did help for sure. Early on I learned songs from tabs in guitar mags in the 1990s.. I got decent on the timing early on which helped much. Also early on when I saw that the E F and B C is always beside each other over the whole neck and in most or all running. That was a big epiphany/ understanding experience. I also put masking tape on my acoustic neck and wrote the notes all over the neck which led to learning the neck notes and connections. Much later on and in recent years I had to ( break some bad habits) and correct a few things which was hard but payed off for present time. Like you said , some players will have some understanding of theory and not know that's what it is. It is important IMO. However, people can and will learn some things faster or slower than others depending on the situation. IMO most people are going to have to put the time in for sure, and get the muscle memory and mind memory to keep improving,. Which that goes for just about everything in life. Thank you. I'm a looong time beginner. I have rhythm, but I am practicing all the open chords over and over with little knowledge of the fretboard. Started to dabble with the pentatonic, and major/minor scales, thinking that it would just happen. I don't have the confidence to join jam sessions and I know I'm missing out. Thank you maybe I will dive into some theory to get some sort of understanding what's going on.

A former drummer, my timing is fine...so playing rhythm I don't think is the issue...although I only know so many chords.. I am self taught so I never formally learned the fretboard...playing by ear, I mimic much of what I hear so in essence I'm not always sure what actual notes I am playing...I know the octaves but just have to count the frets in order to figure out what note I'm on.. I am at the stage where I am bored due to playing the same things every time I pick up a guitar. Looooong time intermediate (I think). I'm retired so I pick up one of my guitars at least once a day...sometimes during the day plugged in to my DAW, or at night sitting in front of the TV.

I think it also depends on the genre. I probably fall under intermediate due to your criteria, but when I think about funk rhythm, man am I still struggling. So long time beginner it is. Also, I'd say, muting, bending and vibrato are a never ending story. Cheers, Martin
