this is a pretty loose discussion that covers what these words mean and the common issues the different types of writers might face. let me know which type you are in the comments below! :)

Always start a book with the ending in mind.

This video was so fun! :) I think I'm like 80% panster and 10% plantser (or would that mean I'm a planster LOL). I usually have a general understanding of where the story is going, but I'm kinda totally winging it in between. If I'm not winging it, I do like what they call stoplight planning? Like you can only see so far ahead, so that means you only plan in increments of like 2-3 chapters/scenes. I think endings are hard for me because I usually know what will happen, but the exact details and how, I usually have to figure that out as I write the story!

My official diagnosis for you is a pantser with a plan lol! I've never heard of the term stoplight planning, time to do some googling Endings can be tough for me too-they also tend to change for me al to as the story/theme develop with the writing process!

I feel like I'm a plantser that leans towards a planner. I have my main beats for the story and then follow my characters around for the ride... haha. In this rewrite I'm in right now I've had to go more towards planning as I'm adding a second POV compared to the previous draft, which has been challenging 😭

Ooh, yes, multiple POVs always shake things up a little! The first time I wrote a 3-POV book, I felt like all my story structure knowledge was suddenly useless, lol. I think I'm a bit of the same! Maybe a 60/40 planner/pantser split

I have so many good Ideas for small sections of books or descriptions of books I just can never come up with plot unless it’s already just popping into my mind so when I was younger I used to get lots of amazing ideas that I can look back on now and say wow what a good idea but then I read what I wrote back then and I see zero plot at all just random events and I realized that’s where this problem comes from I have created a few books but like I said the plot needs to come at me all at once or I’ll just get stuck on one Idea, I know this comment was random but I felt like sharing this for some reason

I think this is a really common problem for writers, I've also noticed a similar issue in published books. scenes that weave together to feel like a coherent, focused story are tough, something that really helped me though was understanding the relationship between internal and external! I really recommend reading story genius by Lisa cron if you're able to; otherwise I'm sure there are some great free resources out there as well :)

I'm definitely a Planster. But I started off trying to be a hardcore Planner! It got really difficult when I kept taking detours as I wrote, and had to keep updating my outline. It was an endless loop. Now I try to lean into my intuition more and have a looser plan

Thank you Lynn. It's important to have this train of thought once in a while, even if you know for certain what type of writer you are. Screenplays aren't too much different. A plotter will tend to go through the physical labor of writing out cue cards and maaaaybe work on key scenes out of order as a means of pitching bigger-budget ideas to investors/executives. But a pantser will go through the same thing as novel and short-story pantsers do: they'll just start with a blank page and do it. I bring this up because I work with co-writers as part of my company, and it's been difficult at times to explain to them how different projects will require different approaches to the writing. Out of curiosity, Lynn, are there tips you would offer to a team of writers as opposed to an individual?

I feel like for the general plot I have to be a planner, because for the description and dialogue I’m way better when I’m a pantser and just winging it

I’ve picked and stuck with many a plot or outline. Only to realize there was absolutely nothing interesting to glean from it. All it ended up being was just a typical plot.

Yup im a pantser! I'm so scared of the revision process but I know there are resources to help me since its my first time trying to make a novel 😊 ,, plus i dont care much for a compelling ending (which i know is bad as a pantser) but i want to create a series so it makes sense to me to leave things not completely finished/resolved.
