There's a new label for people born between 1977-1983. So...are you a xennial?

I was born in 77 and consider myself a late gen X-er. I grew up with vinyl and cassettes and transitioned to cd's in my later teen years. I learned DOS before Windows and Macs came out in 84 when i was in 2nd grade. Our social media was being outside, and like the one guy mentioned we went home when it got dark for dinner and our parents had no way of getting ahold of us unless we told them we were going to a friend's house and my mom called my friend's mom. I turned 21 in the 90's, went shopping for Y2K compliant computers, and wrote checks and put them in the mail to pay bills, and balanced my checkbook by hand. I had an extensive collection of 5.25 and later 3.5in floppy discs which I had to save my college class work on since thumb drives didn't exist. We started off with Atari's and then moved on to Nintendo and Sega. We took quarters to arcades and watched Wayne's World on VHS and was saddened when Married With Children and In Living Color ended. I had Tonka trucks made of metal and was addicted to Dukes of Hazzard, and was glued to the TV when The X-Files premiered and got a t-shirt to wear at the mall that i'd always wear the following Monday.

I don't think anything before 1977 is even transitional, it's flat out Gen X. and even 77-83 is still Gen X, it's simply later 90s style Gen X. The entire 80s babies should be the transition from X to Millennial, that'd make this debate much easier, lol.

I have been saying this for years. I had an analog childhood and a digital early adulthood. Got a pager at 18 and a cell phone at 21. MySpace didn't exist until my early 20s and KZbin even later. Downloading became a thing when I was 18. I saw the new millennium come in at 19. Strange.

80s babies still seem Generation X to me, just a later part. We're not the stereotype of a Millennial, even if we were young enough to adapt into it (especially the more liberal ones like me). Granted the Gen X influence starts faltering around 1989 where people suddenly start seeming way younger/more Millennial, but even they have some tidbits of retro 90s Gen X stuff they grew up exposed to.

77-83 is too damn early, that's still Gen X just a later section of it. They should've made it 82-88 or so. First of all, 77-81 doesn't seem to fit the millennial stereotype AT ALL. Why do these lists never acknowledge mid or late 80s babies as having anything in common with Gen X? (many still share traits from growing up in the 90s)

I still have the jury out on 87 but I noticed the difference way back in h.s. starting with 88 and 89. I was born in 86 and just thinking of my teaching experiences throughout this decade and seeing how digital 90s/2Ks-born kids are in comparison, and also how educational policy changes and parenting have affected academic expectations and more. Plus, the 90s bunch grew up in a more ✌️PC✌️-environment. I think it's safe to put the generations: Silents (50s-Era) 1927-44 Boomers 1945-57 Jonesers (similar to Xennials) 1958-64 Gen-X 1965-81 (My sister was a 79 baby and I can't picture her having much commonalities with anyone born in the 90s...) Xennials 82-87 (A bit more accurate since we were the test dummies of Millennial/digital society) Millennials 1988-06 I feel this is more accurate.

I am definitely part of this group, born 1981...I had long considered myself more part of GenX than Millennials, though this seems to fit better. Coming of age, graduating high school in 1999, before Columbine had chance to take any significant effect, before 9/11, Iraq war, before cell phones became common, before the internet REALLY came I to everyday life, before social media (as we known it today)...the times we live in shape ourselves and I'd say Xenials had an adolescence more like genXers than Millennials, even though just a few years separate. A lot of changes occured in our society soon after the year 2000.

@@Aaroncarter55726 its a pretty narrow 'window' really...Id say like 1977-1983. I read one article which argued 1982/83 being the end cutoff for Xenials; true Millennials came of age after 9/11, had no real memory of Cold War, cell phones and internet were more or less second nature to them. Xenials have at least some memory and experience with a more analog world. I can remember mimeograph machines being used in grade school, well as 16mm film projectors, phonographs, tape decks and the vast majority of toys and amusements involved non-electronic means, save for TV, VCRs and the few lucks of us who happened to have parents well off enough to be able to afford a computer before the mid-1990s. Certainly those born from the later 80s onward had cell phones being ubiquitous by high school, internet in school and home being very common. Not to mention the corresponding social and culture changes that also ensued! I would practically call it a silent revolution.

@austinballard6815

@@helena_augusta I'd say one thing that really underscores this idea is how we communicate and interact with each other: Before about 2000-2005 or so, most socializing was done in person and the majority of friendships and dates were found in person. I do not have kids, but several of my friends from high school and college do...these kids would have been born generally 2008 to 2016, so all grew up with smartphones from a young age, texting and video calls, internet not just in home, but at school, plus computers take up a very significant amount of schoolwork. Dates are found online, with not much interaction, less parenting hands on, less discipline, etc etc...even though only a generation separate, the way these kids grow up is quite different than we did 30 years ago, in some pretty fundamental ways.

I wonder if the only reason they didn't push Xennial farther out into the 80s was so that people born in 84-89 still want to feel young like they'd fit in with 90s babies in their 20s, and would resent being lumped in with someone born as far back as 1977?

Born in '81. My life was Atari and later NES. No cell phones as a kid and "You died of Dysentery" was soul crushing. I remember no storage for consoles. So you would leave it on all night because you couldn't save progress. I was the hottest kid one summer because my Big Wheel had a squirt gun on the handlebars. We played yards games and Spotlight and played in creeks. And I say things now like "I cant stand these young kids these days, they're soft and spoiled" yet I help out and admire (though rarely directly relate) to the older folks that came just a bit before.

Great name for this micro-generation! I like to think of Xennials as "Tail-End GenXers" who happen to have some of the good Millennial characteristics. Strauss & Howe's classification of Gen X (1965-81) is way too short, and Xennial should be a "sub-generation" of Generation X.

It's ironic that the transitional years got stuck onto the later part of Gen X rather than onto the early part of Millennials. It's kind of ridiculous to say someone born in December 1983 still has Gen X in them while someone born January 1984 doesn't, lol. That's why I think they should've just extended it for the whole 80s.

Guess we didn't have the internet (as we know it) back then to convey that information lol...how ironic. Thinking about it just now I had some really weird deja vu about how it was when you had to call your girlfriend's home phone and speak with her parents first. Maybe that's part of what kept us all in line..well more or less comparatively at least. Everybody else remember how awkward it was when you didn't know who you were going to get on the other end of the line when calling? It was like russian roulette haha...you always hoped certain people wouldn't pick up and had to be cognizant of potential other people on a different phone in the house listening to your conversation.

If you are a older millennial, born around the early to mid 1980s, look up the generation (Xennial)

I am smack dab in the middle and couldn't relate more to this as I never felt fully part of either however leaned towards X and was born in 1980. However I can build you a computer and program it, also I can take technology or leave it and see where it can be bad for people not communicating as much in person but yet also embrace it. When I found this micro gen I googled it and everything said of this was spot on, I finally have a place to belong. The picture they have up on Google for the definition is of AOL, wow, spot on. I met the mother of my kids via an AOL Chat room and I don't think this was so far fetched. I had an AOL Pager to a black and white sidekick to blackberry 'even today and prior to that into my early to mid twenties mobile technology still wasn't as advanced 'unless you knew where to go and get what you wanted and paid a monthly fee... Millennial's are always thought of "knowing" how to build or fix a PC or cell phone when I find this to be further from the truth as they just are "always on a cellphone or PC or gaming system" we Xennials are the ones who know how to create, fix and build them down to the nitty gritty... our micro gen... glad to be out of both but I think it should be from about 1977 to 1987 in that ten year span as I had kids as old as '78 or '79 in my class when I and most were '80 which is dead smack in the middle of what they say it is... however I had a cousin whom was very close to me born in 1987 and he was nearly just like "us" down to the alternative music he listened to but maybe a few things had him weighing more towards Millennial just as I GenX however mostly we were of the same tribe so I would say 1978 to 1986 as in the 8 year span at least if not going all in for 1977 to 1987 at most.... ten years... anybody?.... I also prefer xennials over Oregon Trail and put it in me Facebook secondary nickname 'if your a Xennial I suggest doing the same as there are not many of us so we must Scream. :p

But, everyone born in 1977 were all old enough to vote for Bill Clinton- if they even voted as 1996 remains still today the lowest turnout in the 18-24 demographic (which would span 1974 too young to vote in 1992, and most of 1978 as some will miss the cutoff turning 18 after election day). It's also the last year to graduate both high school (1995) and college (1999) unless they were held back or had more than 4 years in college, took time off, etc. Last, those born in 1977 and before were all old enough to toast in 1999, legally, being 21+, meaning it's the last year that they could party like it's 1999 IN 1999. To graduate college and enter the workforce pre-Y2K, vote for Bill Clinton, and party like it's 1999 IN 1999 kind of says Gen X, don't you agree? If anything Xennials should be 1978 to 1983, the college kids of 9/11, and the ones too young to vote for Clinton, and in college during Y2K's big concern. Actually, 1979 to 1983 was the original span of Xennial in 2014 when the term first debuted. Take a look: www.good.is/articles/generation-xennials

The woman whining about being a millenial just PROVED why Millennials are viewed so poorly. It's the entitlement and refusal to accept what is. You were born in that generation - you may have played a game that was around before you were born , but that doesn't give you the same experience as someone who lived when it was brand new. Deal with it.

i would also say that i was a xennial also because for me like everybody else i had a xennial upbringing like i was into the lord of the rings and reading the chronicles of narnia awhile watching the original and the re release of star wars and also had my fair share cassette tapes and to mention the video tapes and the playstation 1 console also that is why i classify my self as a xennial and i was born in 1989 also the year of the xennial if you can call it that too because that was also the year when batman and the second ghostbusters movie came out

The silent generation where before the Boomers. Xennial is just a special brand that one of my cohorts created so that they could be special and specially escape the bad stigma Boomers gave Millennials. Here’s the deal, you don’t base a generation on tech because that changes fast. What we’re talking are cohorts and waves. Regarding a Millennial, that simply means someone who came of age during the first part of the new decade and have a leg in a world before 9/11 and the digital age.

Here's an easy test. If Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift annoy the heck out of you but Green Day, N'Sync, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera are things you heard playing in high school, you're a Xennial. The TV shows of your day were Charmed, Buffy, and Dawson's Creek, and you watched them while in middle school and high school, not while college or elementary school. Ignore the naysayers. You will not be forgotten. Chances are your parents had you when they were still teenagers and that is why everyone is so confused, because you came in the middle between two different generations.

My parents are boomers tho, lol. My mom had me in her late 30's. My parents were born at the start of the Boomer generation. It's not even so much technology or media influences, but it's more how your upbringing influenced your actions as an adult. I'm greatly different from someone born at the end of the Millennial era (1994). I have a bit of the Gen-X mentality: independent, played outside all day, parents weren't always home, didn't have constant supervision much like the generations that came before me. This leads to me being very goal driven and independent in work. I'm not cynical, but somewhere between optimistic yet also pragmatic opting for gradual change and progress (in some cases). Xennials may be more likely to stick with a company for a long time or work toward promotions, where as a full-on Millennial may want to do more meaningful work or may job hop. Still, we can leave a job if we see the writing on the wall and a gold watch and 401k isn't motivation for us to stick around either. We can be loyal but not to a fault. The economic crash and college debt crisis influences my thoughts on financial policies and trends in voting. Also, I find myself more tolerant than Gen-X (they're tolerant, but Millennial are far more) but I can't get into cancel culture. The last thing I want is a pat on the back or a gold star for putting on pants and showing up. I don't need constant feedback, numbers and reports speak more and motivate me to work toward goals. If you're grouped with the Millennial but a young Millennial or Z'er in your job will call you out of touch and you get "OK Boomer" too, you're probably a Xennial.

I was born in 1980 and I don’t think I relate to any Xeninals. I’m more of a Generation Xers than a Xennials. I was a Latchkey Kid (Generation X kids who grew up without adult supervision). And grew up listening to Nirvana and Tupac. Not a Xennial.

This is such a stupid non-issue. There’s nothing more millennial than calling ourselves Xennials. It’s not about who you relate to, it’s about when you’re born. There is no such thing as micro generations. Facts over feelings.

I have discovered this topic a little late, but I disagree that it's a non-issue, at least as far as having any generational names is concerned. I am in this group and one way I would characterize it is having a GenX-wannabe childhood and a Millennial-wannabe adulthood. We looked to the older kids for influence only to be sprung on that the younger kids are the future. Significantly, GenX and Millennials are very different. This isn't meant as a complaint, only that there exists a spread where we are not, and never were a part of either. Tentative dates for "Millennials," however, were apparently pushed back to fill a classification vacuum. 'Put it this way: I identify as much with the term "Millennial" as I do with _Harry Potter_ or with furiously texting in the same room!

Honestly what a stupid way to try to disassociate yourself with stigma around a generation just accept you are a part of it and by the virtue of being a part of a massive group there is gonna be differences between you ill let you all in on a secret no one thinks you are a part of the stereotype unless you react to it in a way like this trying to be special.
