Hello and welcome back to Personal Best Outdoors.
In this video we take a dive into surprise release shots execution. Although there is not a lot of technical info in this video, we will be discussing a new fad in the archery community. You have probably seen it at your local range. I am certain you have seen it online...
The hyper-extended, flailing draw arm after the shot breaks.
I have no idea why this is suddenly trendy in the archery community. While there are a ton of merits to ensuring you DO have a surprise release; the extra movement right after the string leaves your release aid can be killing your accuracy.
I will be shooting my Mathews Monster Safari. Tuned to 86lbs at 27.5" draw. My arrows for this bow are 615 grains. I will demonstrate my point with a UV Hinge 2, and a Ghost index style release aid.
We discuss whether showcasing how edgy and cool your post-shot body movement is worth what it may be costing you in the grand scheme of things.
Full disclosure... to be fair, I used to struggle horribly with target panic. Even coming from a firearm background, when I started to shoot a bow, I ALWAYS anticipated my shot. Years ago, a mentor I had asked if I shot a rifle the same way I shoot a bow. That is when things started changing.
I am advocating for a surprise release... But when you do it, do it for you. Do it because it makes you more accurate and more consistent. Do it for the right reasons.
Don't flail your arm behind you after the shot so other people know. That extra movement is intentional, unnecessary, and everyone else watching knows it, too.
