Are You Capable of Riding a Green Horse? (Part 1)

Are there some people who just shouldn't ride young/green horses?
Ken and DeeDee have differing opinions on the matter. DeeDee feels she does not have the skills necessary. While Ken agrees with the saying that "green on green makes black and blue," he argues that DeeDee has more than enough experience to be able to ride a green horse - she just needs some simple guidelines to follow.
Ken's Practical Tips for a First Ride on a Green Horse
- Start building some relationship and leadership by asking the horse to soften, releasing when she gives. Then work on disengaging the hindquarters.
- Sack the horse out to the saddle and other tack until she looks bored.
- Take as long as you need in the process to be CONFIDENT and COMFORTABLE with the task. You are leading the horse, so you must find your confidence.
- Never second-guess your gut.
- Start small. Just put a foot in the stirrup. Then just step up in the stirrup. Then get on and stay for just a short moment. Never lay over the saddle - this puts you in an unsafe spot. Do these things as many times as you need until you are totally relaxed.

I’ve been riding for ten years, jumping and bareback and having a blast…then I turned 21 and somehow life seemed a little more precious and a little more scary. I just bought a 3 year old mustang who has 90 days groundwork with 30 under saddle, and my first ride on her she crowhopped and I fell. Needless to say my confidence is shot, but this was the exact advice and exact situation I needed to hear to make me feel seen and understood. I will listen to my gut and recognize that I have my horses whole life to bond and learn together. It’s my pace, not other’s.

I don’t have the experience Dee Dee does by any means but it made me feel so much better to hear her say that she wasn’t worried about the horse but rather her own nerves causing the horse to get nervous. That is exactly how I feel !! I bought a horse and have barely ridden because of this issue !

We all get nervous. One of the main things I've found that works is talking to the horse while riding or counting. When most of us are tense or nervous we hold our breath or shallow breath. Horse's definitely feel it. So talking or counting makes me breathe

Thank u. Too many trainers over horse their students and make them do what they tell them they r not ready for. Even recently I had another barn lady tell me I'll make my Stallion round pen dependent. Other trainers have had him out doing stuff but I'm missing 2 muscles and my chest is held together with titanium. If I'm not secure yet to bring my 5 year old stallion out yet... I'm all fine with that. I'm not the same rider I was 10 years ago. I need more time now. So I am glad u remind this young lady she can take all the time she needs with her horse.

My gut really wanted Dee Dee to be facing forward with the horse when putting her foot into that stirrup from the ground cuz I could see in my mind a big difference in capability to respond should the filly move forward at that moment

Great video: i believe you should use this concept when mounting any age horse you have not ridden before. Always be listen to your gut intuition And be observant of the horses signs and reactions
