I am obsessed with your channel! The malinois community can be so, so elitist and condescending and I think you are just so kind and generous. I feel more confident being a malinois mama. My little guy is gaining more energy but just so so sweet and SO happy! Like SO happy. I love him so much and he just inspires me. His training begins next week and I am so excited.

Our three daughters and our Belgian Malinois. . . all I ever needed. They have a lot in common: they need a lot of caring, a lot of loving, and a lot of devotion. And our daugters left the house, but luckily, my Malinois stayed.

Thanks for posting this. I have a mal and totally agree the stigma is unfair. There is such an elitest mindset when it comes to these dogs. If you have the time and patience anyone can learn to work with them.

Erika is with me almost 24 / 7. She spends some time playing with the husband and sons, but I devote a minimum of two hours and often three or four to actively doing something with her, whether that is walking, training, playing or trying g to understand eachother.

I think they know that. Th problem is they need the dog for their image and it would ruin their image and often career if people realised anyone could train them.

I've been looking around at different dog breeds for after I graduate from college. I'm looking for a few things in a potential companion further down the road; trainablility (or overall smarts), easy to manage coat (normally short hair/fur), and protective. The Malinoi caught my attention because they fill those requirements nicely! Now I just need to see if one would be a good fit for me once I'm out of college through more in-depth research and hopefully finding someone I can ask in person. Seeing your videos has given me more insight into the breed, so thanks!

It's refreshing to find someone who isn't elitist regarding owning a mal. I only learned about this breed around 3 years ago and since then I've done the research and it's become one of my favorite breeds. Every single day I search something about malis, I see people saying "DO NOT get a Malinois! They are NOT family dogs! Mals can never be pets! You HAVE to be extremely experienced! If you get a mal you better do bite work and compete!" It's sad to see. There is no advice or suggestions, just "don't own it". My question for those people is, what is a family dog/pet? I don't have a mal but I do tons of obedience, nose work, bikejoring, hiking, tricks, play-obedience mix. My dog is not your typical couch pet who gets 20 minute potty walks twice a day. He easily gets 3+h of physical activity plus all of the mental stimulation. I still call him a pet, even if he is "working" a lot. I get it that a Malinois would require even more work but it doesn't mean normal everyday people can't own this dog. I take dog training/owning extremely seriously and I LOVE to work with my dog and spend time with him. I don't have friends or anything else to do so doing stuff with my dog is all I do most days. So, even if the mal would be a "pet", what's bad about it? In the end, what counts, is how much work you put into your dog. No, you don't have to do bite work or some crazy competitions. You don't have to do every single dog sport there is to satisfy your mal. My future plan will be to own a Malinois. It might be in 3 years, 5 years, or even longer, but I do want to own this breed. Until then, I will stick by the accepting community and learn even more.

Arbi Thank you so much for your kind words and I completely agree! I found the same elitist attitude from Malinois owners when I began researching the breed. Erika is one of the high points of my life she has brought so much joy and laughter into our homes. She is not protection trained.. She was meant to be sons dog. And they do love eachother, but he was spending about an hour a day with her, and I had her the rest of the time. I believe she saved my life with XL bully attack. But she is actually more protective of my son. But at about 4 -5 months I had her out for a walk. I am disabled but I .damage a few metres with crutches. I had her on a long lead and she was straight into the river while I tried to negotiate about two metres of sloping slippery ground. It didn't go so well I remember hearing 2 splashes and then feeling water drop on me and her breath blowing into my nostrils. She must have covered about 24 feet in three lunges. She helped me up the bank. Well to be honest, She dragged me, helped me get to the scooter and home. Since then she has decided it is her job to look after me. I haven't been to A&E since we got her. She has taught herself to run to me if I am an unsteady, to lead me to a chair or bed if I am near fainting, to go get the husband If I need medication and a rather terrifying manoeuvre to break my fall. She has also learned to pull if asked so I can walk a bit further leaning into a waist belt, or if the scooter gets stuck. She will pick up anything I point to and ask for , and can open doors for me. She spends ages trying to teach me to understand what she wants, how to communicate. And despite being much stronger than I am or perhaps because of it ,She is so gentle and careful never to hurt me. She has also alerted to smoke just in time. And she absolutely offends so many of the more elitist Malinois owners, th done a who I sits on shock collars and these dogs are deadly weapons. It just ruins the image they want to project to have one so carefully taking care of an older disabled woman. They are what we make them. That said , I have a lot of time for her. I do not think things would be so easy for us otherwise. I absolutely would not recommend the breed to most people , simply because the amount of time they need. It's not a breed for someone who thinks a 20 minute walk after work and maybe a 20 minute walk and a bit of training is all a dog needs.

You talked about picking a breeder who breeds for certain traits more suited for family dogs; it would be super helpful if you could make a quick video talking about some of the things you looked for when getting your malinois because it seems like whatever your criteria it worked out really well. I have my first Belgian malinois that is now 3 years old. I didn't have any experience of this breed at all. I got him when he was 13 weeks old. I watched a lot of KZbin videos on how to train him. He is a family and a service dog for my husband that is a quadriplegic. He is a very loving and loyal dog. I don't do those sport training with him at all. He his very calm and lazy in the house and is very full of energy when outside off leash. He is always in a working ready mode but calm about it.

Just bought my first Malinois. I wanted a German Shepard forever, but it never felt just right. The Malinois is perfect on many levels. My son, who lives separately and with 7 daughters bought a male litter mate, and I bought a female. There is some sibling fighting but there is much hands on training going on. I thank you for this insight and encouragement because it is very elitist community that has identified with this breed and I think I can do a good job. However, you’re right, both our puppies are never alone. There is always some guidance and some form of training going on. I am trying to find a community that will support Marz’ and Dante’s development in the SoCal area. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for making all of your videos! Please keep making more because they are so helpful! 😊👍❤️ As of a week ago--we adopted a "Shepherd 7 month old mix. "The vet said she feels she is a Belgian Malinois. With that being said, I sincerely want you to know that your videos are helping me so much! We start training her with a professional trainer today--and haven't had her a week yet so I want to thank you for your videos. You are so wonderful sharing and showing how these dogs can be amazing with training and commitment versus the other videos that have scared me about the breed. We took her for a temperament test on Friday at the dog trainer's we are taking her to and she passed--- 🐕👍❤️ so that was exiting! I was super worried when I found out she may be a Malinois, but your videos have calmed me down tremendously--and I appreciate how you are so informative. (We also have a 12 year old rescue and she's Dachshund mix that we've had for 11 years. We watch them both constantly and "so far so good"---but I'm looking forward to seeing your videos about your new puppy as well and any tips you have bringing a new puppy into your home. ) ❤️🐕🐕❤️ Thanks again for taking the time to make and post. I had to comment because I wanted to thank you--- and share how you are so helpful with this information.

I also agree with these Facebook groups. They are so negative. I joined them and started to see their true colors. I left those group and found better advice on KZbin. I understand these breeds are hard but how do you expect people to gain experiences with these dogs if other people are being so negative. The way to gain experience is to raise one and see it first hand. It's like a job, they expect a person to have a degree and also have years of experiences. The only way to gain experience is to give them the opportunity. Keep up the awesome videos!

Thank you! Fell in love with my next door neighbors 8 month old dog while gardening in my back yard this summer. She would watch me intently and I would go over to the fence and rub her and talk to her. This was odd because I never really liked dogs. I was always a cat person, but this dog simply captured my heart. Not being a dog person, I had no idea what breed she was, but that didn't stop me from dreaming about the her. Yes, she would show up in my dreams. When my neighbors could no longer take care of her they asked did I want her I said absolutely! I do trust my husband as well but honestly I could see any human you g insane and. Becoming an axe murderer before Erika turning on her family, barring an epidemic of rabies in the UK. But all the claims of them being monsters scared me off getting a rescue. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn't hesitate to take a rescue. And I won't ever have another pup. Your dogs are awesome and you are awesome! I think when you get a balanced poppy and you really train that Puppy correctly you are right in what you’re saying. I find that the problem lies with people who want this type of dog kind of like some want pitbull‘s, but they really aren’t in to the training. The one thing with a Malinois is they are very expensive so that keeps people from getting them that shouldn’t have them. But most people are not hobby trainers, and don’t want to spend the time it takes but they want the glamour of owning the dog breed. This is a dangerous combination with any working breed dog.

Thanks a lot for that talk, I am a new subscriber and I find your videos so informative and useful. The content in ur channel is so interesting !!! We always had animals in the family , but I never chose a dog by myself, one that fits my expectations and lifestyle. We now have a small dog in the family that my sister chose , but I dont spend much time with it cause I might love it but its not suited with me and my energy level and athletic everyday routine. That's why I fell in love specifically with german shepered, mals and dutch sheperds.I kinda done my ''research'' (still doing tho, cuz the info are never enough ) and decided to get one.Your videos also helped me a lot. Im a 18 yrs old girl, I have a LOT of free time and a very athletic-active lifestyle , that's why Im looking for a dog that fits my lifestyle and character. I also go for long walks ine the mountains and I want a good ,curious, full of energy ''companion'' to join me and ''explore'' the forests with me, haha. I also want a dog to protect my house as I live outside a village nearby the mountains where there's no traffic at all. Im about to get either a dutch or a malinois in this summer and ofc Im planning on hiring an expert to train my dog. So which gender would u recommend me to begin with ? Which bloodline suits better for me? Shall I take an expert to my home for the training or do it in the dog training center? ( We had some dogs in the family before, but this gonna be the dog I'll take everywhere with me , I want it as my ''personal dog'' . excuse my english btw, Im not a native speaker :)

I have been considering on buying a Belgian malinois for over a year now, and this video has touched a lot of concerns that has me some times reconsidering on owning one from watching other video’s…. This type a dog has me really interested because they are so smart and they are so beautiful. I would like to do exercises and obedience training most importantly, the protection training is not so important… my question is does he have to go through protection training or is exercise and obedience training enough?

Thank you for sharing. Honestly I raised dogs before. I stayed away from the Malinois, not because they had bad reputation, but because unlike other dogs, especially at young phase, they require more attention and time. Now, I have a two, 3 months old Malinois. They are playful, funny, they train fast, but they are demanding. Other dogs can settle for several hours alone, those little new ones can't. Even their sleep time is weird, they sleep for a maximum of 3 hours and wake up fully charged wanting to play. What do you recommend we do to make them sleep during the night? They wake up exactly at 02:30 for the bathroom and 04:00 to play. Last night we took them out for a long walk and play bit before midnight, yet they still woke up at 02:30 sharp.
@MaligatorMom
@MaligatorMom 4 жыл бұрын
Mo Al that’s wonderful! Your pups are probably waking up at 2:30 because that’s the schedule they are on. At 3 months old, they can definitely “hold it” overnight if you set them up for success. That means take their water up 2-3 hours before bedtime. Place a sheet over their kennel at night to prevent them from environmental stimulation and stop taking them out at 2:30. You might have a few nights of them whining but they shouldn’t need out to potty in the middle of the night at 12 weeks old. Get them nice and tired right before bedtime and then put them in their crates and allow yourself a break and the ability to sleep through the night! 😂 good luck! I’ve raised two Malinois pups at the same time and I would never do it again so props to you!! 💜✌🏼

Maligator Mom thanks for the tip. So two nights now, yes they barked and complained. I just stand in front of the crate and they go silent, a bit. But they definitely held their potty time till breakfast time which 5am. Hopefully with time they’d stop barking and sleep through the night.

Hi! We have a 7 month old male mal. He’s got high drive and his line is protection. Around 4 months old he started being more intolerant to our nieces and nephews. We are now to the point where he has to be on a collar and leash when our family comes over and we are just not sure what to do. Just this morning my niece was giving him a treat (while on a leash w my husband) he let her pet him… and then all of a sudden out of no where nothing changed but he did a terrifying snarl at her and lunged. We have had him with 1 on 1 personal training along with my husband working with him multiple times a day every day. He is worked with. He works for food and treats. I don’t know what to do. Our mal who passed away this spring was literally the greatest with everyone who came in our home. I just don’t know why this is happening and I’m curious if you have any insight of what we could do to help this situation. We have never been people to “put our dogs away” when company comes over. But we are now at that point if we can’t be with him and have him on a leash. I’d appreciate any suggestions or thoughts you might have

Two bits of info. I LOVE your intro music - but it's volume is very loud compared to your soft voice. I wear earbuds (like most viewers) and the volume difference between the two is shocking. LOL. I meant that in the best way as I know we are all learning. And, could you do a video on your house cleaning process? Thanks very much. Looking forward to watching Storm grow.

Ohio Malinois Mom ツ Yes thank you! Someone else pointed out the intro music as well so on my latest video I corrected it and moving forward it won’t be such a stark difference in volume anymore 👍🏼😊

First, thank you for your video. I am new to Malinoise breed. I am learning more about it and considering big time to take Malinoise puppy. However, I have a question for à choosing a guard dog for protection. Did you not consider Doberman? I was considering Doberman and went pretty far taking one Doberman. Until I discovered your channel. Your videos changed my direction to Malinoise. I found a trainer who will find me a Malinoise adult dog etc… but all my friends & my husband are absolutely against Malinoise…. So back on Doberman… want to know why you did not consider Doberman or German Shepard ?

I really enjoy your channel and learning about this breed. My wife and I still work fulltime even though we are both (61 & 60) and we currently have two Chihuahuas in the home. We go camping as much as possible and are considering getting a Malinois, but as you explain in this video there is a narrative out there of mainly negatives about this breed. So refreshing to hear a different and positive point of view. I have so many questions, but for starters, can I train a puppy with such a schedule? I'm currently working from home, but unknown when I'll be required to go back into the office. Are there Malinois owners out there that work full time? I won't bombard you with any more questions and appreciate your input. Thank you.

Going to be getting a Malinois puppy at the end of the week. Very excited to train with him as he will be my first Mal but nervous to see how my American bully boy adjusts since he’s the spoiled boy right now. I think and hope they get along and tire each other out since my bully is already extremely welcoming and playful. Also nervous for that puppy stage again but getting him into training right away with the breeder/trainer any other tips? We’re getting him from a breeder who focuses on k9 work but they typically have 2 litters going on at same time a high drive litter and a low to medium litter. Got a low to medium due to although I am in law enforcement he won’t be full time work dog that will be just training. Any tips and thoughts on all of it? Awesome videos by the way, loving the content!

jesseromo01 Yay for you getting a puppy! It’s a very exciting adventure with a Malinois pup. It sounds like you’re doing things right by getting into training right away so GOOD JOB! One simple tip I always offer to Malinois puppy owners is to never feed your puppy from a bowl. Make him work for his meals/kibble through training sessions. This does a lot to establish a hierarchy and bond between you and your puppy as well as prevents food aggression later. Keep me posted how it goes!

On point. But all rules and changes for your lifestyle (for 12-15y) are also necessary for other workingline shepherds. A lot of people do not understand the meaning of work. Work is not something you just do.

Would love to pick your brain. I have a 6 yr. Old GSD that is a rehome. We've had her 4 months. We also now have a dumped, landmark (MAL) 7-8 Mos old. Both females. I'm committed to both. But this is a totally new experience. I just want to talk with someone that loves and knows both breeds. I'm thinking at looking into search and rescue with my MAL.

I just found your channel and love this video!! We got our first mal 8 mos ago and she takes ALL of our time so I admire you for having almost 3 mals and 4 children! I love our pup more than I could've imagined...she is such a handful and without our trainer not sure we'd of made it this far, as we are first time dog owners ourselves, but she's changed my life already. I'm always watching all these vids from trainers saying first time owners cannot have mals and they arent pet dogs....it gets me frustrated when we are going through challenges sometimes with our pup so this video lifted me up when I needed to hear these things. Also what is your advice on dealing with reactivity towards other dogs? She goes to parks, stores etc but she's very reactive to other dogs still. Any advice is much appreciated!! Glad to of found your channel!

Emily Clay So glad you found some encouragement in my videos :) It sounds like you’re doing the right thing by getting trainer. I too would have been lost without mine so I always stress that point to new Malinois owners. But I also encourage people to consider this breed if they have the right commitment 😀 Because they can be awesome family dogs! Dog reactivity can be a multifaceted problem so I try to stay away from giving advice beyond “basic” training online. I always advise people to seek the help of a professional when issues such as these arise and it sounds like you’ve done just that!! Cheers to you and tour pup and I’m excited to have met another Malinois owner like you! 😃

Well said. I'm a 5ft woman who owns a 6-month-old malinois, and I always ALWAYS get these types of comments like "can you handle that dog" "that's a working dog" and "it's not a good idea for such a small woman." It definitely took a lot of time and patience on my part, and there are times when I almost believe these things that I hear, but I persevered. My dog, Arthur, is the best friend I ever had, and I am amazed by how he learns and perceive things. Thank you for building this community

Is obedience training going over every command u have taught ur dog like 15-30 minutes a day?
@MaligatorMom
@MaligatorMom 4 жыл бұрын
sarah taylor A Malinois will require more than 15-30 minutes of obedience training a day. I think for a typical “pet dog”, 15-30 min a day would be fine but I work many many short sessions a day with my Malinois. 5-10min sessions and always end on a high note. But remember, there are lots of ways you’re probably incorporating training into your everyday life with your pup without realizing it, and those count too! :)

They are more effective than a gun. Plain and simple. A gun doesn't alert you before a burglar/attacker even gets into the house either. I am convinced only a Darwin Award contestant would even try to break into a house with two Malinois, let alone protection trained ones ... . My own experience there, is with the sweetest most people loving Leavitt bulldog. (I was dog sitting her.) Point is, middle of the night the owners awoke to two masked guys shining flash lights through the terrace door. The dog showed pure aggression. The owner told me later, she cleaned dog spit from the glas door - over 5 feet high. That wasn't a trained dog, that was instinct alone. The burglars smartly decided to run ... :)

Do you train themselves or you hire a trainer
@ZigzauerLT
@ZigzauerLT 2 жыл бұрын
I both agree and disagree about a necessity to be a professional to get Malinois. Like you don't really have to be a professional but you must be dedicated. Most average dog owners don't have time or dedication to work with their dogs and Malinois aren't the ones to be left alone or to lay on a couch for months. If you can spend at least an hour a day to walk around, play and train with your dog - in most cases it's gonna be fine. BUT if you are not around for most of the day and expect 15 minute walk at most - this isn't the dog for you. Malinois will figure out a way to entertain themselves and as they're so bity - it's gonna be a mess. Regarding kids - it's okayish in most cases but you still have to be careful as they are very bity ( even the play bites or nibbles may hurt ) and relatively clumsy for a breed that can easily jump nearly 2 meters into the air so they can hurt them by accident. And most importantly - do not ignore the protective features of the breed. If your dog is attached to your kids - some friend or neighbor may do something unusual near you or your kids and may get bitten without any hesitation. Same for people coming into your fenced yard without warning - this may be a welcome feature to protect yourself or kids from strangers but image some other kids coming to your door to ask your kids out - this can imediatelly become a shit show

They sound like German Shepherds. They can absolutely be a family pet, but you definitely shouldn't just get a puppy and put them in your back yard and hope for the best. There is a high level of commitment with these working dogs, and you need to be aware that they absolutely need training I think.

The elitists are just being gate keepers and like the ego trip of a cool dog. Most mals I've come across were family pets and were thriving and well balanced and well trained dogs. Everyone says GSDs are versatile dogs who can do it all and can also make good pets at the same time, but for some reason those same people turn around and say malinois, a related and equally versatile breed, cannot ever, absolutely never, be a family dog. The online communities are toxic with that mindset lol.

Literally every video it’s some man say those things though. Defiantly a “male dominated” stigma. My point is that I would talk to a woman who has done it because they are not going to tell you “you just can’t do it”, again many videos of people who are open to mals as family pets have women.

I disagree with protection dogs because it's selfish to the dog. What if the bad guys had a gun? You are endangering your dogs' lives. You could just keep a strong taser in your pocket at all times. I think you should have emphasized all the work you had to put into your dogs in order to have the dogs relax at home, bc I have a friend who wants a mal & he doesn't think he has to get involved in any sports or activity other than maybe two walks a day. He also wants extremely aggressive dogs bc he wants protection dogs (without any training....)
