Am so glad with the recent trend towards more Aussie wines. Could've added a cooler climate Shiraz (Yarra Valley) to contrast, or even a Shiraz/Viognier( Yering Station or Clonakilla) blend to really show versatility

Thanks for showcasing some more wines from Australia. Wrattonbully is often overlooked for wines in general here due to the larger Sth Aust áreas (Barossa, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley and Coonawarra) getting more media. For a totally different spin on Australian Shiraz recommend Hunter Valley and Hilltops wines.

One thing I do miss about living in Singapore is the access to all the great small producers in Australia. Even though I prefer leaner reds with earthy tones, I do find myself craving a big, bold Aussie Shiraz once in a while.

Thanks for tasting Madeline and highlighting the wonderful region of #wrattonbully! 🍷 The cool climate and ancient soils we have in Wrattonbully allow us to create some really interesting wines. South Australia is definitely not all the big fruit bombs that we have perhaps been known for in the past. For example the very high end Penfolds wines like 389 and 707 always have some Wrattonbully fruit in them😉🍷

Lived in Melbourne for 6 years and loved the variety of Australian wine styles. We only see a fraction of these in the US. Try a Heathcote shiraz, a Mornington Penninsula Pinot Noir and a Clare Valley Riesling. So much diversity and lovely wine down under!

Heathcote is an amazing shiraz region 2 hours north of melbourne with amazing terroir, worth trying Wild Duck creek springlat shiraz and Vinea Marson shiraz/viognier

As an side, it's interesting to note that in order to be able to perform such an analysis of wines, one has to be not only an expect in wines, but also in various other flavours. For example, one has to be able to identify black cherries, and distinguish them from non-black ones.

Glad to see diversity and development in Aussie Shiraz/Syrah. I have to say. in years past those blackberry jam alcohol fruit bombs weren't that enjoyable unless you were eating medium rare steak, or a roast. I am unfamiliar with the Wrattonbully region, thanks for highlighting it. I will be on the lookout for it.

Wrattonbully is just north of Coonawarra, it has a sandier soil and isn't in the Terra Rossa region but Coonawarra producers find it makes better shiraz.

There has long been diversity in different styles of Aussie Shiraz it’s just that in the 1990s Robert Parker ‘discovered’ Barossa Shiraz and that style of Shiraz became the template for Shiraz that was exported to the USA and other markets.

so first bottle is NOT a shiraz but a blend .Not a fair comparison. We have so many wine regions in this country. Would be nice if you did a serious comparison. Tasting wines from more of our regions. Barossa, McLarenvale, Hunter valley Coonawarra or Tahbilk in Nagambi. I personally do not like the reds coming out of the Rutherglen region It's Terroir makes them taste "muddy".

I really think pronunciation shouldn't be obsessed over in wine, I hate when I get corrected for pronouncing the H in hermitage, but it does make me laugh when Aussies (especially older more affluent ones) over pronounce Shiraz as if it were a French word. Being an Australian invention, Shiraz should really be pronounced with a hard A, Sha-Raz. But as long as we're all enjoying the wine then it doesn't matter. Also, check out Adelaide hills shiraz, and other cool climate areas like Yarra. There has been a real trend against big bold Barossa Shiraz's which almost no young people here are drinking, instead the more floral, pretty cool climate versions are becoming more and more popular even so much so that they're being labelled Syrah to differentiate.
