I cut my fret wire vertically for about the first 4 frets and it was causing so many problems with the tang that I changed to horizontal and never looked back. Thanks for the video!

I cut mine side to side as you do. Just the other day after I was cutting frets I was thinking what if I to cut top to bottom ....I never did try it...but now you're doing a video on it. Thanks for the video.

When I cut them top-to-bottom, it would crush the tang and bend it over, so I switch to side-to-side and had no problem since.

In my experience, cutting top/bottom runs the risk of lifting or depressing the fret ends if one has the cutter at an upward or downward angle relative to the axis of the fret (where one of the cutter blades exerts more force on one of the top or bottom part of the fret material than the other of the tool blades). Side/side tends reduce the risk of altering the radius/curvature of the fret. Just my 2 cents!! Cheers for this video.

depending on the cutters that you are using, you might get a small twist at the bottom of the tang that needs to be straightened out with needle nose or some other small plyers or the tang will not seat into the slot as well..or at least this happens with my cutters.

Great video as always !! I was going to say a cuting tip on a dremel would be a way to do it .. but in that instance your not holding on the fretboard to do it.

I cut side to side. With up and down, if I wasn't very careful, I sometimes pulled up on the wire, pulling it out of the fretboard a little.

I was surprised that the side to side cutting was what deformed the tang, I would have thought that the up to down cutting would have had more risk of deforming. When I first started watching the video I immediately though, "Why would this matter, it's going to get filed down anyways"

I installed frets for the first time yesterday on my cigar box guitar number 2, number was was fretless slider. I cut vertical because it made sense.

Cutting top-to-bottom tends to bend/deform the fret in a bad way. Especially Stainless Steel frets. Side-to-Side club here.

I cut vertically. it requires some skill to not damage fretboard and to cut right length at right angles, but then it's easier and faster for me to grind fret edges.

The risk of cutting into the fretboard when cutting vertically is a real concern. I’ve done it.

Sure it seems like a " small thing", but it's big news to me, I'm a 66 year old beginner, I gotta replace 7 frets on a Jackson, for the first time.

I think the optimal way would be to use some kind of finetooth saw cut, or a cutting wheel, giving a precise cut with no stress on the end, I've been pondering this for some time... FWIW

What about the fret twisting a little? Has this ever happened to you cutting from side to side? I think that might be why I switched to top/bottom cutting but I may be remembering incorrectly.

Oh man! Cutting horizontally totally kills the mojo! Cutting vertically makes a much cleaner, articulate tone. 🤣
@j-mo245319 сағат бұрын
I don’t like to smash the tang. I haven’t always nipped them and just little cleaner. When I’ve nipped them I switch it up and cut across the crown for the same reason. If it doesn’t sound smart enough I don’t care I like doing it this stupid way. Lol

Both ways are wrong. Never use cutters! I use my CNL9000, (computer numeric laser). 8-)
