I love and hate that I have found your show. For someone who went to sound school and has been playing guitars for 20 years, I've already learned double the tone and pedal knowledge in the past week or two of watching all your back log of shows than i did before. The hate part is that it is sparking a gear seek and purchase mode for me haha. Thank you again. Aside from the wonderful knowledge and production, I love that you generally cover all the basic marshall, fender, vox core tone starting points and are starting these videos with a great recorded tone before getting into pedals. It gives such a better context than a lot of pedal videos.

They're achieving the ineffable tone I'm always shooting for. It's a violinish tone that Bonamassa, EJ, Robben and Jimi would get. It's like creaking wood in an echo chamber -- does that make sense? It has a distinctly violin-type woody sound. The Dude & Dumkudo just poured it on with the massive headroom--well most of them did, including the Wampler. Flipping beautiful. I don't have the ears of these two, but what a fantastic channel. Learning so much.

Here is a fun way I got around to a pretty good dumble impersonation: Chain: CS fender strat - Xotic Ep-booster (internal dips: bright, no 3db boost) - BK Butler Tube driver (w. bias control & yugo tube) - Standard Boss GE7 - Fender super reverb (71 unmodded silverface, Jansen speakers, late-breakup tubes allowing for added headroom and non-crunch compression). So the deal is this - The EP-booster is set to a minimal boost. The bright setting provides a defined high end glassiness that comes alive without much breakup at finger touch. At a light touch it's almost clean. The bright setting provides a certain stiffness however that will matter next. - The BK butler provides creamy crunch and lots of low end. When the "stiff glassiness" meets this it becomes possible to have mostly just that at light touch but bottom end and crunch to overdrive will activate as soon as you dig in, creating dynamics in both volume, degree of breakup and in terms of how much low end "thud" is delivered. It feels almost slightly scooped but it is really not. So already you got the dynamics and a mix of brightness, creaminess and pleasantly snarly overdrive. - The GE7 allows a slight post boost that tightens the low end, solidifies the high end - and you can add extra girth and creaminess to the bottom end. Really this step is both about cleaning up and focusing the output of the prior pedals and matching volume and EQ to the response of the speakers so that the low end thud does not become flabby and in order for the high end cut to compress and even out instead of delivering sudden unwanted icepicky spikes. I got a pretty good dynamic Robben Ford like tone out of it, which I am sure would have been even better with a Tele or 335. Really it seems to me the key part is matching that defined glassy fendery top end with a more marshally but discrete low end growl that leaps out by degrees when you poke at it. It feels almost like two sounds in one, but with a different type of response - the high end being the more stable and generally present singy part (which of course you can then modify with your guitar volume and tone knobs, while still retaining the overall character and behaviour of the tone). And the low end being the dirty dynamic and unruly part. The response, and subdued snarl, is reminiscent of the Xotic AC-booster, but the separation between the layers of the sound (glass and growl) is more pronounced in this setup and the overall tone tighter and more focused and compressed in certain places, whereas the AC has a generally softer and almost "delayed" feel to it that is arguably not as "present" for a Fordlike sound. Mind you I was aiming for the amp sound and response as I have heard it on videos, not a robben ford tone per se. Granted it's a lot of dollars and pedalage for a single tone, but who are we if not troublesome meddlers?

Depending on the setting or band I use custom Ear plugs. I have a raging case of Tinnitus from 42 years of playing. Most of the time I can mitigate the volume levels in rehearsals. I generally don't wear them during gigs either but when it gets loud at rehearsal; I recommend them. I do wear them to loud concerts though. While the constant ringing doesn't bother me, it sure makes hearing people talk a difficult chore to hear. Not everyone is effected so use your best judgement.

Huge thank you's to the two of you! I ended up buying a Royal Overdrive from Anderton's last Friday. It arrived three days later, here in Vermont USA. I was able to quickly dial it in, thanks to the other video that Mick did with Danish Pete. I am using it with a Mesa Boogie Lone Star Special that has the Reeder mod. I have Channel 1 set to 30 watts and Channel 2 set to 15 watts. Mick, your idea of using the Royal as a foundational tone was spot on. I can shift quite naturally from Ch1 clean, adding the RO, adding the mid boost, Ch2, and so on... It all sounds rooted in the same DNA if you know what I mean. Oddly I ended up using B3 for the best touch sensitivity and clarity, which surprised me as the manual seems to recommend A1. I am playing a Gibson ES-345. Again, thanks a million for all your hard work and sterling advice. Kudos to Anderton's for lightning shipping and a painless transaction.

Yeah, true. But what if you don't like the sound of that pedal? I'm a decent enough player to have made a living doing it for twenty years, but the BD-2 has too much gain (and bass, pushed through before clipping) to sound good with the gain control anywhere past about 10 o'clock. If I have to use an EQ in tandem with a pedal for it to sound good, I'll use something else.

@@augustusbetucius2931 Exactly, most guitarists are not trying to sit in a mix. Or even on stage trying to get everything to sound right. They're on the couch in their living rooms. I own several of those and concur that the Ethos is more complex than I care to deal with. The Royal is way too big for my testes, and as I've actually played several Dumbles, didn't feel like it really got the tone. The Dude is why I came here for the comparisons, and I wasn't disappointed. The Dumkudo was very cool, but can't find those. The equalizer is the most misunderstood, underrated guitar effect on the planet. I highly recommend waiting lists for pedals, and gear in general. I was on the CT Ethos waiting list for a bit. Wasn't very long, maybe 8-10 weeks. However, just as with the list for the KoT, the time it takes to wait for your turn allows time for better sense to prevail. I have never purchased a pedal after time on a waiting list. We all spend way too much on stuff we really don't need anyhow. Our wives are all in agreement on that.

That 'mature' and 'revealing' comment: THANK YOU! I have been playing a Dumble clone for years, and a lot of ignorant people think it's an amp that makes everything sound good and is very forgiving... I bought the amp because it's the sound I had in my head, and it just keeps pushing me to play better and better... When I let other people play it they believe me, but on youtube with all the 'experts' it's a hard myth to change.

I really enjoyed this video and you guys seemed to enjoy making it too. This video came up in my recommended videos because I've been looking at preamps. I'd heard the Ethos and I wasn't really feeling it because in some of the other demos, people seemed focus on either clean or heavily overdriven. While I liked the cleans, the pedal took on an almost fuzz pedal-like sound when heavily overdriven (it seemed to lose all dynamics) which isn't really my cup of tea. From clean right up to somewhere between medium and high gain it sounds really nice and you guys demonstrated that point between medium and high well. Unfortunately it is another in a long list of pedals that I like but will never own due to being skint.

Daniel TheGigRig Having just watched your fuzz pedal video I thought it worth elaborating on my original comment. I don't dislike fuzz pedals. In fact I am a fan of them (I'm a White Stripes fan). I don't even think the sound I'm describing is characteristic of a fuzz pedal when used in a way that I like. However I've heard a sound similar to it when someone has demonstrated a fuzz pedal and used settings that produced a sound I wasn't fond of. It's hard to describe, but I know what I mean if you know what I mean :)

I have a Dumkudo/Zenkudo twin. BTW it does the Zendrive thing perfectly, and then some (We A/B'd those extensively). The Dumkudo has a three position switch for clipping options which have drastic impact on the sound. They didn't experiment with that... Good enough for Larry Carlton. When I got my D/Z I sold both my Tube Sereamer Analogman mod, and my Blues Driver Analogman mod, as the D/Z could do both and then some. It will go from perfectly clean to massive OD. Just saying...

I think the Euphoria was designed to sound like a Dumble, actually. The Wampler website says it's based on "D style Amplifiers." But they do say it was designed to do more. Side Note - Masterful job with the Boss pedal combo. You guys tweak pedals better than anyone I've ever seen.
@stratagize
@stratagize 8 жыл бұрын
+James Low I agree James. I actually use the Euphoria as my base "clean with some hair" tone with a Strat and Fender amp. Works perfectly for what I need (blues/blues rock)...but it does not have the same character as say the Royal, Ethos or Dumkudo has...I liked the Dumkudo the best as it sounded great and had the least amount of "controls"...I can see why these guys liked the Royal and the Ethos so much...But I'm a "set it and forget" guy....definitely not a pedal tweaker. All that being said the Euphoria is really a great pedal and fairly versatile...but even in the "Smooth" setting which is actually the "D Style" setting, it does not have that "thing" that these previously mentioned pedals have. This was a fantastic demo to watch and listen to.

Great vid! Perhaps it’s time to revisit d-style pedals? Mick has since had first-hand experience playing a Dumble, and many pedals not included here. Would love to see Zendrive, Dumbloid, Ethos Clean-Fusion, Gladio, Tanabe Twin Custom episode.

Bought my Ethos for $500. The offering that makes it so appealing is it has cab sim and AND a power section. So I can put it last in my chain and I'm ready for any situation. Hey we need a noise-less stage. No problem. Your amp head is screwing up. That's not an issue. It is way more than just an OD pedal. It's my backup amp.

I wouldn't say that it sounds closest to a Dumble by any means, but the Euphoria definitely sounded the most useable of the lot. It was the most detailed, forward, amp-like sounding pedal by far, although maybe not the closest to the Fuchs. Loving all of these videos, guys!

Mick makes a great point around 15:50. "Larry tours with a Domkudo (or Zenkudo) when he can't take his Dumble". So boys, would love to see a comparison of pre-amp/tone in a box/analog cab sims that can be plugged into a JCM800/JC120/Twin/PA/whatever and allow a player to carry their tone without carrying their amp.

Great shoutout. There are indeed a number of fine dumble sounding pedals out there and perhaps someone's favourite was not on trial here but I think the Zendrive is a must and sort of a benchmark to evaluate other pedals which are perhaps superior. I also found that the ''Dumble thing'' was acheived just as much by the mid signature than by the way you played at times. Many of us associate that tone with Robben Ford type playing...

I love the Overdrive episodes but, when or will you do a show on noise suppressors/noise gates? I know I need one but, I would love a good guide on how to chose the right one that isn't going to change my tone or lob off the highs. Love the show! Keep up the great work!

@That Pedal Show - When you guys are playing the Fuchs around 10:00, and Mick gets out that gorgeous singlecut hollowbody (I think it's a Collings?) and gets that equally gorgeous higher-gain lead tone on the bridge pickup, Dan uses a phrase I'm not familiar with: "too much midrange." I've heard of "not enough midrange" and "could use a touch more midrange," but "too much" is a stumper.
