To people who are saying that what san did was threatening, from my point of view i felt that this scene showed how much san respected and cared for deok im. Despite having the power to have her, he din do so. What he told deok im here seemed more like him trying to tell her that she should not bring punishment to herself that easily cus crooked minded people can easily tear her into pieces while showing that he is protecting her. I rlly loved this scene and you could see his hesitance in untying her shirt, he never intended to do so, he jus wanted deok im to know the seriousness of her words. I guess this was how i interpreted the scene :)

I could not agree more with your assessment. It is his genuine love for her that points out to her that he does not need her permission. He never forces her. He knows she loves him; so it is doubly frustrating to him. Ultimately, he makes a very wise comment to her when she again tells him that she wants him to let her go after leading him to believe that she will agree to be his concubine if he commands it. Instead of saying angry words and pointing out to her that this is the opposite of what she told him the night before, he maps out for her the reality. He will let her go. but she has to understand that she will never, ever see him again. He asks her, "Can you live with never seeing me again?'" He is in the process of letting go of her hands when she takes his hands back into hers. Had she not done so because (we know and he knows) she loves him, even though she refuses to say the words, just imagine what could have happened to her? It is true she protected him, but it is also true that he unfailingly protected her after he ordered her from the palace. If she turns him down, I do not believe that he will quit protecting her, but it will be much more difficult for him to do so considering the concubine system and palace politics. Imagine what could happen to her if she refused him that night and the dowager Queen once again asked her to serve the Queen, but she once again says no. The Queen has made it very clear that she would destroy her.

I want also to commend the FL on her acting. There is no way that the ML could give the performance he has given unless he had such an outstanding actress playing across from him. She is a court lady, and she has very few rights. But she finds ways to live a rich life that includes her devotion to others. She is willing to risk her life for him and for other court ladies. She remains true to herself and what she believes but she is also true to the position that she has in the palace/court system. Deck-Im is a remarkable person. She knows her place; as much as she can she is true to herself .

@@victorine4147 I agree. I was new to KDrama in late 2021 and on into 2022. I was stunned how few honors she received. Not even one director voted for her for the Baeksang. I have never heard anyone talk about this. But I did hear a lot of people talk about how she was the heart of "The Red Sleeve". I remember one of the older actors who had watched her since she was a child, talk about the fact that her presence always made for a fun, warm, and inviting environment on set. Not exactly the same, but almost the same thing happened with "The Law Cafe." What happened diffierently was Lee Seunggi's very angry reaction to how poorly she was rewarded for all her work. I happened across the clip where he said the show became the most watched show in its time slot, and it was Seyoung's performance that drove it there. He talked about the fact that the only award she got from the "powers that be".was best couple along with Seunggi. She did not get best actress. Seunggi, on the other hand, received a Daesang. Actually, it is Seunggi that brought me to the KDrama world when I happened to see a clip of one of his table concerts at home. The only reason I stopped to watch it is that for several years my young adult children held "Music In the Parlor" concerts. at our home. I have to finish watching her latest KDrama. I think that she i already filming the next drama with two Japanese actors. (My apologies for the length of this post.)

This is just a lover's quarrel. They are being mean to each other. She was a tad arrogant by telling him to punish her properly. He was trying to get her to understand he as the king has the power to punish her beyond her imagination. But he chose not to. In the end, it's just one of many instances where both of them love each other deeply.

Sorry but this for me demonstrates the exact contrary...he could punish her in many ways and yet he threatens her with the one and only thing that he knows would hurt her the most...kinda toxic but at least he didn't do it 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't think Deokim said those words to Yisan out of remorse. You see upon knowing San was going to have a new concubine, Deokim felt overwhelmed with the news. At the same time, she also learned (fm the princess) that all along, her “sheltered” life outside the palace was all because of the grace/mercy given from San, the feeling of insignificance of not being able to do anything, along with the frustration and sadness of knowing she still card that much for him had prompted her to voice all those bolding words to San. She needed to push San away because she was unable to do it by herself. The only way she could do was to make him push her away. Knowing she was successful at her attempt, Deokim shed tears at the end after San left.

I have heard a lot of people recommend this drama, but I have steered clear of it because of the ending. I have a hard time with a tragic ending. I know it’s historic, but I just like happy endings. So not sure I can watch it even though I love the male lead. He was so good in King the Land that I would love to watch him again. Maybe eventually I can 😢

He knows that she loves him and he understands why she keeps turning him down. They are both bound by the rules of their time. Whether or not he takes a concubine is not his choice. His queen was chosen for him, but she has not had any children. He loves Deok-Im and he is justified in his belief that she too loves him. We also know that she loves him based on all the times she has saved him from disaster. I believe that he had already loved her for 15 years. He does not want to choose anyone other than Deok-Im and he is quite sure that she loves him, even though she keeps turning him down.

Love the characters, but this is my least fav scene in the drama because of how he threatened her. Anyway, no character is perfect, and I think the writing is good. He can't seem to control his anger and said some mean words to her.

Yes, he said mean words to let go of his anger and frustration. All along he could force her to be his concubine but he couldn't do it because he genuinely loves her and didn't want her to suffer if she rejected.. so I really feel sorry for him.

She told him he should have punished her for what she did in helping her friend, for her arrogance even now because she doesn’t regret it. But he didn’t really ,instead he asked his sister to help her when she left the palace. I don’t think he was trying to be mean. What I think he meant was “I could have acted like that;would you have preferred if I did this instead when I know this would be a great shame for you. “That’s what I understood

That was the whole point I think. There are no perfect character. I think it's to emphasis the difference in power dynamics. This relationship was not healthy and dangerous for both of them. San is so restrained and uncompromising, but not when it comes to her. He feels that he can't control her and it does pisses him off especially since he's a control freak. And she knows that, and uses it to her advantage at times. The little show of darkness is kind of what makes the characters interesting to me. This is one of my most favorite scenes to be honest. 🤣 but I like character twists. I do agree with the comment above me, she asked him to punish her, which is more of a challenge cause she know he wouldn't. So he doubled down and told him of the perfect punishment for her that he could think of. Which is... Yeah, her worse nightmare. Goes to show that he actually really knows her.

Sexual harassment in today’s world. It wasn’t in the time period it actually happened. All woman in the court service were required to submit to the King if he wanted them. They were not allowed to have sex with anyone except the King. Records show King Li San had 4 concubines, the first died young, the second one he never slept with, Deok Im whom bore him the Crown Prince and a daughter who died and had several miscarriages along with dying while late in her pregnancy, the last one he had a son with after Deok Im died. True the conditions in which Deok Im submitted to him were not perfect but he definitely showed that he loved her. Kings don’t follow the rules or mores of ordinary people.

It seemed to me that the king could use that to sleep with a lot of women and I am more of a one man / one woman type of person when it comes to the dramas I watch. But from what you said it seems he was faithful to just her and only slept with someone else after she died. I understand this was something that was done in the past - I would want more of a traditional marriage which I get the kings could not have.

In the era, court ladies are basically cosidered as king’s women. Court ladies are not allowed to refuse or disobey king. About spending night together with king, yes she should accept it. It’s kind of her duty to help him inherit his lineage by having children. She can’t disobey. If she does, it means she shoud be kicked out from palace in disgrace. It looks like a rape threat but it is rather disgrace threat.

They didn’t kill her or her children. The little boy had smallpox (or measles). What she died from was never mentioned nor what killed her other children.
