This came up in an old episode while talking about laundry but to remind people. A little bit of white vinegar (3 caps) with a load of laundry replaces softener and dryer sheets for soft clothes. No smell at all. Fabric softener ruins your washing machine

I agree with one caveat- vinegar can’t replace a dryer sheet for those who experience static cling. So for that I use a non scented large dryer sheet that eradicates (almost completely) lint and dog hair. But the use of vinegar as a “softener” combined with the proper amount of detergent makes a washer last a helluva lot longer.
