Great tips thank Tim. I have found blackberries to be an absolute pain to get rid of as well.

I removed around 5Ha of Lantana from my old family farm at Byron Bay, I found Triclopyr [Garlon] + Sulphate of Ammonia to be very effective and cost-effective [Garlon has around 3x as much Triclopyr as Grazon for around half the price].

Hi Tim. A great topic. It was great to show how different people tackle problems in the bush. Lantana is not easy to deal with. Cheers steve

I have a small acreage in Qld , a mix of grassy paddocks and treed areas , i have certain areas of woody weeds to deal with , Brazilian pepper , Cassia , Guava and Lantana , the Lantana is pretty easy to control , rip it out and burn it , follow up with mowing / slashing where possible and spraying along fencelines . Where it was particularly thick at one time I heaved a sturdy reef pick type boat anchor into the mass and dragged it out either with the Kubota or the 4x4 ute , more than once to gain access then follow up with a rope sling around the stems , gone . Cassia is sling around the stem and pull , it's shallow rooted , branches can weave through other trees which can be time consuming . Small examples can be pulled by hand in damp soil . Brazilian pepper , stump cut , coat the cut stump with neat roundup , stumps rot in 2-3 years and you can kick them out with your steel caps . Can take over if allowed . Guava is the most persistent weed to try and eradicate , the tiniest bit left in the ground will re-shoot , roundup makes its leaves die then they re-shoot , this plant I want to destroy but thus far it still exists on my property . If anyone has an answer for these vermin plants I'm all ears .

Causes photosensitisation in sheep if they eat enough of it. Nasty condition to treat, can involve keeping them out of sunlight for months. I never planned on keeping sheep alive in my workshed, but we do what we have to for things in our care don’t we. Great variety of Ag content Tim 👍🏻

Also remove the seeds if possible thought would be better to spray before flowering as seeds will be there as well as flowers? another fun one for QLD is Giant Rats Tail (I believe introduced by the government way back to supplement land due to its high protein content or something?)

We have boxthorn and it’s nearly as bad a Lantana , we have a local engineer Auscrimper who builds a puller that attaches to a front end loader or bobcat, works great I would recommend anyone trying to control anything like this have a look at one in action we removed a lot in two days with a bobcat I then stacked the boxthorn up to burn at a ideal time .

I'm lucky here in S.a. I don't have it. However Accacia paradoxa [Kangaroo bush] is a problem , very prickly. Unfortunatley it's protected. Can you believe that ?

Hey Tim any chance you could do a segment on controlling bamboo effective ways to get rid of it

Pour copper sulphate over it. But dried Lantana is excellent for using to make friction fire with because it's very soft wood
@FarmLearningTim Жыл бұрын
Hi Nathan. Please be careful with Copper. It’s not as safe as people think. It’s a micro nutrient in humans, we need micro grams of it for cell function but oversupply is very toxic and linked to cancers, MS type symptoms and other diseases. In soil, copper is persistent and destroys soil micro flora (it’s a common fungicide). I personally know some orchardists who have walked off soil that has become copper toxic due to repeated crop spraying. If you would like to learn more about copper and its effects on agricultural workers please see my old paper here pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22234616/ Stay safe mate

A side note , I was once told that if you have Lantana then you have good soil because it doesn't like to grow in poor soil . That should give some comfort to those dealing with it 🙂

We have a little sap sucking insect that stops it growing, just holds it back so just have to slash it occasionally. It is no longer a curse. Used to grow 3 metres high now just little straggly bushes with brown spotty leaves.

Thanks, Tim, another interesting video. Lantana is one weed I hate with a passion. I was once told by a cattle farmer near gympie that he uses camels to clean it up. Apparently is like sweets to camel. Cheers

Doesn’t harm them because so far I haven’t found any animals that can survive eating it for any length of time

Poor Koalas can’t move around due to Lantana. especially on the north coast of NSW.
@tanyiabailey479211 ай бұрын
There may be some truth to this I have been at my property now for 2 years and seen no evidence of koalas and I’m in the Kempsey/ Port Macquarie area the property that I bought was very run down and overgrown with lantana so far I have removed about 6-8 acres of 55 acres which is badly infested with it
