But since you've already reviewed Dialing Banjos, with RC&BJ check out Foggy Mountain Breakdown by Flatt n Scruggs and put your seatbelt on Brother ADogg. You're going to need it. Agree totally! My relatives play some of this music! Mom mandolin and guitar…. Daddy … dobro and harmonica, uncle on daddy’s side… played steel guitar, uncle who could give Fats Domino a run for his money on piano! Also had an uncle who played banjo on Grand Ole Opry with his band with his band mates! Thanks for keeping this music alive! It is Traditional to Southeast US

Roy Clark got his start by winning the national banjo competition two years in a row in the late 1940's. So, around 1947 or so; Roy was the best banjo player in the country (probably the world). Then he became famous for virtuoso Guitar mastery. He played over a dozen instruments at a high level. But. for me it is his guitar playing that always captured my heart.

So many people have this attitude about backcountry music from the old days currently, like it's no good, or not noteworthy, and this here is pretty much why they're wrong. Buck and Roy and a handful of others back in the old days of the 50s-70s wrote and played absolutely MASTERFUL music in the bluegrass and REAL country genres. Roy could play just about anything with strings on it. If you weren't in the middle of a big city (aside from Nashville, TN), anytime in that timeframe, this is basically what you listened to. I remember growing up in the 80s WELL out in the rural areas, and we basically grew up watching reruns of Hee Haw, gunsmoke, Bonanza, and the like. My grandmother and I used to love watching these guys on the stage in Nashville at the Grand Ole Opry, then finally back in 2016 (literally like 25-30 years of my life later), I got to go down to Tennessee and spend a year living less than an hour from that stage, and got to go through Nashville and SEE the places where these two, Minnie Pearl, Grandpa Jones, and so many others like Dolly Parton (who is an ABSOLUTE wonderful human being), George Jones, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn... just TONS of other artists performed near nightly. It was a great experience and I don't care who you are or where you come from, I highly recommend going down there if you can and spending an evening in one of the bars with live music on some summer evening.

Buck Trent was on the old TV show, Hee Haw with Roy Clark. Roy and Buck Owens were the hosts of the show and Buck Trent was one of the regulars who was on the show every week. I'm sure you know that Roy Clark and Buck Trent were both playing the banjo in this video, not the guitar, and you probably just misspoke. But Roy was an outstanding guitar player also.

ROY CLARK WAS ALSO ON A FAMOUS T.V. SHOW CALLED HEE HAWW. THAT ALSO HELPED HIM TO GET NOTICED BY ALOT OF PRODUCER'S. I GREW UP WITH THESE GUY'S. THEY WERE BOTH EXCELLENT MUSICIANS. SOMETHING ALOT OF PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW IS THAT ROY CLARK ALSO PLAYED ALOT OF BLUES GUITAR. HE LOVED PLAYING WITH BB. KING.

He Played Lead Guitar for Dolly Parton on 2 Songs "I will Always Love You" and "Jolene" He toured Russia, with Roy Clark. In fact they were the First Country Music Act to be allowed to Tour in Russia. (circa 1976) He released his last album in 2018 titled "Spartanburg Blues"

@roldo23
@roldo23 2 жыл бұрын
The tune was made famous by its appearance in the movie "Deliverance" where it was done as a "duel" - much like "head cutting" among Bluesmen - between a banjo and a guitar. The original 1955 version by Arthur Smith and Don Reno, called Feudin' Banjos", was actually done with two banjos - a five string (like the ones in your video) which are plucked with the fingers and a four string "plectrum" banjo which is played with a pick. There are also four string banjos known as "tenor banjos" but these are tuned differently than the five-string and plectrum instruments.

Far as I knew and seeing him play on TV shows like this (think this was Hee Haw) he was a studio musician at the beginning and later become famous by playing on the 1 hour shows that was on TV mostly in the 70s on all three network stations being ABC, CBS and NBC. Back in the days just being great at playing instruments was getting them on shows and with others touring. Also, in the early 70s and earlier these artist would be playing at all schools that could hold around 500 people on too 2,000, as not much with stadiums, bars, eatery places that had players perform, and county and state fairs. Way different then than now. Most times these artist had to pay for their boards, food, mostly did their own driving or with others driving, gas and would play two or three times a night at different places. This was how Elvis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, and my favorite Louis Armstrong.

A duel is something that goes way back. They were outlawed eventually. Gentlemen dueled. For an insult (like someone kissing your sister something that affected your honor) you'd decide saber or some type of weapon or pistols. They'd stand back to back and start off by going ten paces then turning and firing pistols. If you missed, the one you were dueling with would take a shot. If you didn't stand there for it, you were a coward. So, yes, a duel is a competition. You'll see this played out in historical movies. Alexander Hamilton, Founding Father and Secretary of the Treasury died in a duel with Aaron Burr in 1804. So, duels, dueling etc. made it into the language. All, so 168 years later, Roy Clark and Buck Trent could have a duel called "Dueling Banjos". There's a history moment from someone that has been awake for 52 hours. Pardon any mistakes.

The song is called "Dueling Banjos" so Buck and Roy were just taking it to the next step and dueling with their banjos.

One time Mr. Clark showed up on Johnny Carson with a fellow player and put on a brilliant performance that was even better than this "Deliverance" cover. Dig that one up for us!

My dad's name was Don Reno and he was the co-writer of that song. Him and Arthur Smith wrote that song back in 1955 and called it Feuding Banjos. Check it out on KZbin
