"The difference between snapshots & photographs is does it make you ask a question? Does it make you wonder?" *Sees girl not looking at camera* "What is she looking at? It's not great, eye contact would be better." The photographer did exactly what you think makes a good photo. He invoked wonder. What is she looking at? It makes the photo much more interesting IMO. I like your reviews, I feel like I learn a lot from them, but sometimes you piss me right off, no offense intended whatsoever.

It bothers me how Jared always seems to want to do a high contrast black and white when when the photo is clearly trying to capture the colors. Black and white is nice on certain images, but not ones with such great tones.

***** Sometimes high contrast black and white is a great way to save a photo where you tried to capture colors and it didn't work so well, like the photo with they hay bale. It's a crap photo in color... *maybe* it'd be better in B&W.

I don't like that Jared seems to pay attention to the gear first and photo second. Who cares if there are a lot of shots on a kit lens? Is this a photo critique or gear critique? To allude that a picture is only ok because it was on a kit lens before even diving into it is why people are mistakenly obsessed with gear rather than technique. He should block out the gear an only show exposure info (perhaps in FF equivalent).

the photo at 4:50 is brilliant! the one after is nowhere near as good, the contrast is flat and the back ground fuzzy and not in an atmospheric misty way. Are you sure you know what you are talking about? Nice set of pics from this guy, liked the airport and skateboard photo too

J. Nwokedi thank you - also in the second picture that stone structure could have added interest and been less "generic" than the one at 4:50 - i think that is what Jared is getting at - although he says snapshot and an ugh picture. So the second picture that he says is better - that stone structure is composed in such a way that makes the overall image rather clumbsy, walking further to the right and bringing it in closer to right front with the lead of mountains and lake could have worked better. I'm not a fan of long exposures to freeze water which he seems to have done here but that's his choice - i like to see the movement in the lake the way nature intended, in addition i don't feel he had the right natural light to really bring this out the day he shot it. But still great photo's and it is rather awful for Jared to say don't make mistakes like this guy - he obviously has talent and should be encouraged to continue shooting in my opinion

That photo at 4:10... I'd rather you say you're just not into landscapes, Jared. That photo is amazing. Well exposed, great composition, very nicely processed. I love your videos, but this time I think you missed the point of that frame-worthy photograph.
@0tispunkm3y3r9 жыл бұрын
I agree with Jared on that one, the silhouetted foreground looks janky to me and the back ground could do with a bit more contrast and richer pink for my taste. I don't agree with his ideas about going Hi-contrast B&W though, but my personal preference is to have nice rich colours. So that's what I like.
@DustinBKerensky979 жыл бұрын
PowerHouse70 Overloaded saturation is the trend now. I agree that it's a nice soft image, pretty mountains with an interesting shoreline. It evokes a more gentle emotion rather than a harsh feel that more saturation or clashing contrast would give it. What Jared and other people are missing is that it's a MOON-rise, not sunrise. It's a night shot; if it's B&W you wouldn't be able to tell if it was moonrise or sunrise. And jacking up the saturation would make it especially fake since night shots like this are generally more monotone in reality. As it stands the light levels are already far brighter than it probably was in reality.

I'd like to toss in some thoughts on this lineup. Hummingbird pic: looks great, and doesn't especially need a tighter crop; that works the way it is. Plane: the reflection in the upper left could have been avoided by putting the lens closer to the window and shielding it with a coat or hand or something. Moonrise: looks phenomenal, and really can capture the emotions by placing the viewer there; low contrast helps give the feel of the atmosphere, like it's a place with high humidity and/or some late evening fog coming off the water, so I would have to disagree with the "blah" appraisal from the video. Rocky lakeshore: that's one that could have used a tiny bit more contrast, but looks awesome for a landscape like the previous one. Hay bale: seemed a bit too staged because of the unlikely place a photographer would be standing; remove the dude and make it a horizontal sunset landscape and it's a winner. Tunnel: definitely compelling, makes the viewer wonder about the person laying at the side. Picture in picture: If the kid's face was more in view we could see who he might be within the photo he's holding. Skateboarder: could have used a combination of brighter exposure with reduction in highlights, or as-is exposure with a boost to the shadows to help even things out; great feel of approaching dusk. Looking up: great composition for a portrait but that doesn't match with the direction she's looking; could have used either looking right at the camera, or some context of what she's looking at off frame, sort of like when someone's positioned next to a window and looking out for the portrait rather than at the camera. Bee: definitely could have used a longer depth of field to go with that great macro composition.
